Anyone have an easy Gyro recipe?

I usually order my meat, but my son is having
his 15th birthday today and requested gyros for
his birthday dinner. Too late to order!

I was hoping to use steak 'ums meat or something
along those lines. I cannot stand the smell of lamb,
and I have tried the lamb recipes - not for this occasion.
I have to feed a bunch (8 +) of teenage boys, so I
need to make a lot. I figure most of them probably
won't know the difference in meat if I season it well.

I tried food network's website - nothing.

Anyone have any ideas?

Wish your son a Happy Birthday and I am sorry I have no advise regarding the gyroes, but just reading about them is making me very hungry. I haven't had a gyro since I ate at Olga's at the Lakeside Mall in Michigan a few years ago...that with their Orange Julius type drink...yummy. Oh well, enjoy feeding the guys!
how about this??

Imitation Gyro Sandwich/Greek Sauce

Esay Gyros without hassle! Exellent!

Ingredients
1 box Philly Steaks
1/4 cup Water
Ts Worcestershire Sauce
Pinch of salt
Pinch of pepper
1/8 ts Garlic powder
1 Tomatoe
1 Onion/thinly sliced
Package of pita bread
-------------------------------------------
For Sauce
1 cup Plain yogurt
Juice of 1 lemon
1/8 tsp Dill weed
2 Chopped scallions
2 tbsp Chopped peeled,and seeded cucumbers

Preparation
Pan fry Philly Steaks under medium heat with water, Wocerstershiure sauce,salt,pepper, and garlic powder. As soon as the water boils away flip them over once and fry another minute or until no longer pink and that side starts to brown. Set aside. Meanwhile stir together all ingredents for sauce. Stuff cooked meat,tomatoes onions into the poket of 1/2 pita bread add 1 tbsp of sauce.
Here's one I tried, and I didn't think it tasted gross due to the lamb. I liked it a lot because it tasted like a restaurant we go to! ...but my husband told me to keep looking for a different recipe.

* 1/2lb ground beef
* 1/2lb ground lamb
* 1/2 onion, chopped
* 2 pressed garlic cloves
* 1 piece of bread, toast then crumble
* 1/2 t dried savory
* 1/2 t allspice
* 1/2 t coriander
* 1/2 t salt
* 1/2 t black pepper
* 1 dash cumin

1. Turn grill or in my case, a george foreman on for medium-high heat & oil lightly
2. In large bowl, combine ground beef, ground lamb, garlic, bread crumbs, savory, allspice, coriander, salt, pepper&cumin. Knead until mixture is stiff. Shape into 4 very thin patties (1/8" thick).
3. Cook 5 to 7 min. each side or until cooked through. Can cut into 4-5 strips too

Made with this on top of burger: plain yogart,sour cream, fresh mint, garlic salt, chopped cucumber, scallions & tomato together.

edit: I'm sure you can do all ground beef
I've seen the gyro meat in grocery stores, either frozen or in the meat case. It's already cooked so you would just need to heat it up. I don't think it smells like lamb. I think Steak Ums are gross and would rather use the official gyro meat, adding the sauce and onions, etc.
I wish I could find the meat around here!! I'd do anything
to not have to cook lamb. I love the taste, but it's like
cooking liver to me- stinky.

I can't believe my son is 15. I think I'm in denial

Get in your car.
Drive to Progress Ave
Stop at Shab's Pita Stroller
They are awesome!!!!

You know, they have everything a mini Lebanese shopping center with everything else for making gyros, I wonder if they'd sell the meat too?
Hey ! I had no idea -
Vic is up that way right now, I'll call his cell and see
if he can find it.
Buying it is better than making it, for this crowd anyway.

Are Gyros Lebanese or Greek?
I was gonna make baklava and a grape leaf rice side - maybe
that was kinda dumb.

Shellie
will they eat it?

id do a tabouli salad instead... a lot easier... or even safer bet...super seasoned french fries with garlic and spices!

gyros are greek...but there are a lot of cross over foods, kinda like polish/russian/jewish.......
Gyros are Greek........and I am impressed that your 15 year old likes them! I am 41 years old and still can't do lamb....too gamey. I've been married to my Greek hubby for 15 years, but the lamb thing still hasn't rubbed off on me.

But Oscar loooooves feta cheese. He can be in the other room, and if you open a container, look out. Sheepie Stampede!

Ok ladies, hate to spoil this but a lot of gyros these days come from prepared meat purchased from the food wholehouse. (I've got several 10 lb boxes in the freezer now......shhhhh)

If you wanted to do this properly.......I've done it once......you take a leg of lamb and butterfly it (debone it). Lay it out flat use a meat mallet and beat it a bit flatter. Then take a beef roundsteak, beat it too. Place on top of the lamb, roll, tie and put on rotisserie. Oh, I forgot the marinade......lemon juice, cardamon, oregano, garlic powder/salt. Let the meats sit in marinade overnight before rolling.

I've run across pork gyros........interesting, but much prefer lamb. If you have a nice piece of pork and roast it with all the olive oil, lemon, garlic, oregano and then slice very thin.....it would make a passabe gyros.

Tazikiziki sauce is basically : yogurt (thicker the better), chopped cucumbers, garlic and then optional lemon and dill.
Gyros are technically greek but everyone in this area calls Shab's a "Lebanese" restaurant. They even won an award for Best Lebanese restaurant as voted on by Harrisburg locals. :roll: Sometimes, no all the time, I worry about the people that live in this area!

So what did you do, Shellie?
Is it true or is it a myth that "Gyros" is pronounced "Hee-rows" and is where the "Amercian" word of "heros" meaning a sandwich in a long roll?
I've always pronounced it year-rows :?

i do too!
make a gutteral "year" and then roll the "r" on "roos"

Never thought about that Ron, but logical.

As for Lebanese, realize many may be Antiochian Christians. We have several families in our church as well as Syrians and of course Romanians and Ukraines.
ours are year-rows too. Or actually more like yer-rows. :roll:

I love the people who say jire-ows!
Or those that say pot porrie... :roll:

Yeah, I never was good at printing phonetic pronounciation.....it is more like a "rows" which is what I wanted to mean with "roos"....just somewhat swallow the "w". All is all, sounds yummy.

the Tzaziki ....cucumber sauce, is an excellent salad if you leave the cucumber pieces larger, add yogurt, garlic and dill. Good for summer. You can make ahead but not too much. The garlic starts to oxidize and takes on a funny flavor.....use fresh, not the prepeeled stuff, it's kinda musty tasting....unless you have a taste for it.
