We have a 10 month old puppy and a 16 month old. Our 10 month old is still eating Science Diet large breed puppy and our 16 month old is on Science Diet large breed dog. Lately, our 16 month old is refusing to eat the adult food, only eating it selectively when we mix it with some of the puppy formula. Obviously she prefers the puppy formula better. Now, even after we have been mixing it, she will leave the adult food in the dish, only eating the puppy food. We know that if we were to feed her the adult food only, eventually she will get hungry enough and eat what she is given, but we don't like the idea of her being hungry and not having food available, which is why we have been giving her some of the puppy. We are also worried that the puppy food has more fat and such which isn't always the best for an adult. Curious if anyone has dealt with this before and any suggestions. We are happy with the Science Diet since our 16 month old also has a sensitive tummy and this is the only food so far that hasn't given us problems with her digestive system. Now she is just being picky and choosing not to eat it! |

You might try weaning the puppy to adult food so there's no choice in the matter. Puppy food in adults can lead to messy rear ends and maybe some extra padding around the belly.
To get the picky one back, use some broth or other temptations. I always put something extra on 3 of the 4's food. Today it was left over orzo that had been cooked in broth, yesterday it was a 1/2 cup of salmon that I added hot water to......some got more salmon soup than fish, but the heads stayed down. |
When Barney won't eat his food I'll sprinkle a little bit (like a tablespoon) of parmesan cheese over it and he gobbles it up... |
