Do you tip your groomer?

Pooh Bear is going for his fist grooming....and GOD DOES HE NEED IT!

Do you tip the groomer or not so much?

Hi, We tip our groomer who is the same lady each visit. We give $20.00 and our bill is around $100.00 and it is well worth it Oreo comes home happy and looking good.
Of course! :)

Tipping is showing your appreciation for the service they are providing you. It doesn't matter if you go to a big chain store or a small store ....to me, it is rude not to, but that's my opinion.

During Christmas, I always bring them a cookie basket or a special added gift (money) because they work so hard and I know it makes them feel good. They treat my dog so good.
Good question!! I dont tip. I never really thought about it  (shame on me) And she only charges me 20 for bellas shampoo and dry. now i feel really bad. :( She is on my christmas list tho. does that count?

Well, we tipped her roughly 20%....I think for next time, tho, I need to do a bit more research.

For the bath, cut and dry, ear trim, nails etc....the whole shabang, it was $55. Pooh also got a Groomer Report Card and scored his first A+....right on the refridge it goes!!!
Yes. Since Henry and I have been fired by two groomers to date, we do tip the ones that will take him. At first, he gnawed on the groomer all the time. After 2-1/2 years, he has learned that no teeth are allowed on people, so now he licks her non-stop.
Pooh's report card for his first grooming said that he sat there very well behaved, but got a little annoyed with the cutting near his eyes.....no problems with the paws (yessss...) or *areas* so provided he stays this good, we have found our groomer!
As a groomer I can say that tipping is appreciated greatly, but it is at the customer's discretion as to how much.

I do my best work always whether or not someone tips me. Sometimes the grooming bill is all a paying customer can handle.

But for those that can we do appreciate it!
I have to agree on tipping I figured its just like me going to get my hair done, and I always tip my hair stylist so why not the doggie stylist??hehe!!I cant always afford a big tip, since i take all 3boys in,but I do make an attempt and by me coming back every 6weeks Id hope shows them I do appreciate the good HARD work they do :D
You are so right tanyathenurse. Regular customers are very important to a grooming shop. You should be treated like gold. :D
:D
We are VERY happy with Lynn. She has been doing my boy's and
girls for over 2 year's now. :D
I agree it is hard to give a large tip. We have 6 dogs. I do try
and give her what I can when she is here (once a month) we bathe/
shower them in between.
In addition to a small tip, I get her a little gift of some sort.
However............This Christmas she got a $50.00 Tip!!!
I put it in a red envelope and into a small Christmas Stocking.
I was thinking she would open it before she left today, but....
Lynn said she would wait until Christmas. Not sure if I believe
her or not!
Anyway..........Yes. What you can give is most appreciated by
the Groomer. As was said, grooming is expensive in itself.
Whatever you can give, I am sure is appreciated.

I don't tip my groomer, but she is her own boss and has her shop in her home. So, all the money goes to her, not someone else. She does a wonderful job, and I let her know that I recommend her to everyone who asks who I go to!
You should tip your groomer, unless they are the owner of the business.
I take Ty to Petsmart, because my groomer does a GREAT job with him and I always ask for the same Groomer I tip her between 5 and 10 dollars (depending on what she does).

When I went to an owner operator I didn not tip.
I am embarrassed to say I never thought about tipping the whole time we had Mopsy. For some reason it hit me to do so the first time I had Harry groomed so I have both times. But I am glad someone mentioned Christmas. That is a good idea. Thanks.
my groomer is the owner, so I usually just give him a nice Christmas gift.
I have bought him gifts (candy, plaques,) usually on a whim throughout the year. I take my 3 every 6 weeks too. He charges only $43.40, hasn't raised his prices in years. Unless the sales tax goes up (as it just did in NJ).

I just took over the dog grooming business where i used to take my kids. I am the owner and only groomer. This is in addition to my other part time job. Trust me any tip appreciated. Even if it is just a couple of extra bucks.

What would you consider:

A good tip on a regular basis
An excellent tip on a regular basis

A good Christmas tip
An excellent Christmas tip

In dollars and/or as a percentage of the grooming fee.
The reason I ask is that it seems to me that if you charge $35 a $35 Christmas tip is one thing, but if you're charging $80 a $35 Christmas tip is quite a different thing.

Thanks.
My groomer's fees are usually $60-65 per sheepie. We are there once a month...do I really need to give a tip each time? I'd be totally broke! I love my groomers dearly; however, I'm one for compliments and return business goes much further than a tip. But that's me...I'm kind of cheap :)

Since I now have two wonderful groomers I gave them a gift basket which was about $40 and two Altered Art by Stacy Items (valued at $30).
an extra $5 makes me very happy but the most I've ever charched anyone is $40. As for Christmas Isn't it the thought that counts the most.

Only when there's actual thought involved!
I think consistent tipping is a must. When earned, it shows that you apppreciate what they have done. Though if you aren't happy with the service, then a tip isn't warranted. It doesn't have to be $20 each trip, but I am sure $5 is acceptable and welcomed. We take care of most of our grooming ourselves, but when we go to our groomer, because of her experience and the way she treats our boy, we usually give $10 - $20 per trip.

At a bar I usually tip big at first (actually learned this trick from an old english drinking buddy while we were teammates). Gets the bartenders attention, and usually the service is much better, especially when the place is crowded. I follow the same adage with the groomers, or any other service provider I know I will consistently use. The bigger tip at first gets their attention, and usually will get me a little more preferential treatment down the road (squeeze me in, late pick-up, early drop-off, etc.). But we still give something additional each time we go.

I think at the holidays anything extra is appreciated.

i agree. in college, people would always say if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to go ...when referring to the taxi, restaurants, and hair salons.
Yes you should tip your groomer. I am a stylist for a big pet chain company. I get paid minimum wage or comission. Sometimes the only food I have to feed my family with is from the dollar store so every buck counts. I am a single mom raising 3 kids. Their dad is dying of brain cancer and my one child has a chronic illness. I look forward to tips, just to help pay for gas, food etc.
I tip the groomer 20% everytime. I think thats the only reason my groomer takes my Sunny! LOL. They told me he is the worst dog they have ever groomed. He is in melt down (on his back with paws in the air), I just took him last week, they said he is getting alittle better.
well I have tipped some of the times and not others. Reasons being how Cinde looked from what I askd. She has come out looking like a poodle (yuck) she has missed spots and left hair long, but when she comes out nice I tip. This Saturday she looked good, so we tipped!!! then she told us when doing her face (I keep short) that she had nipped her toung. Well nothing on the way home . After 20 min. she was licking her front paws and the rug. There was blood all over. It took us 45 min. to stop her. We has to muzzle her. Now I am sorry I tipped.
I tip Oliver's groomer about 20%. Sometimes a little more, just depends on what I am asking her to do. Two weeks ago, I frantically called her needing a cut, and she squeezed Oliver in the very next day! She even stayed late so she could finish Oliver's blow dry. I really appreciate the work she does for me and the fact that Oliver loves her, so it is worth the extra $15 every 3 months. (And he gets to stay in the princess room when he is all clean.)
I get charged $50 for Obe. I have always just gave the lady $65 and said thank you. She always does a great job so I am very happy Now she said it will cost more around $100 for having him scissor cut when his hair gets to long.
I always tip my groomer....she charges $25 and I give her $40 and when I need to get in I always have a spot.....and she does a wonderful job..so it is worth it........am thinking of giving her gas card for Christmas ...anyone can use that
I have to move. I have been trying to get a regular groomer and finally found one. She started out charging me $55 now her hair is growing and she moved it to $70. Before this lady I never pay much less than $100. I do usualy tip about $10.
I want to keep her long but it is sooooo hard! With 4 kids I barely have time to brush my hair let alone hers!
I definitely have mixed opinions regarding tipping. This is a relevant topic for me since Tucker is going for the first time next week...

If I have made the appointment and the groomer did her job exactly, then why am I tipping? I'm not saying I won't, I'm just playing devil's advocate. Aren't I paying her to do her job? Isn't that what the fee is for in the first place? If I only tip for a job well done, then I'm actually giving extra credit for her to do the job I asked for anyway. Aren't I?
Now if she squeezed me in, or stayed late, or put up with misbehaviour from the dog, or in someway has gone above and beyond what is required, then I have no problem.

Shouldn't extra work = extra reward (i.e. tip) and average work = average reward (i.e. the required fee)???????
I totaly agree with that!!!!!!
I always tip the groomer who does my Westies as she takes all 4 at once and always looks exhausted I collect them ! :D They go next week and will be taking a christmas box of chocolates with them ......Archie hasn't needed her services yet but I'm sure he will eventually .
Julie .
