Teralynn,
Yes two years is a pretty "standard" guarantee length, such as that guarantee may be. You should ask to sit down with your breeder and go through the contract before the day you take your new 4 footed child home. Waiting until your puppy's "gotcha day" is potentially a big problem as all you care about that day is taking him/her home and you are unlikely to take the time to go through the contract and understand it. Make sure you understand just what the "guarantee" is. If a dog is guaranteed to be free of hip displasia, eye and thyroid problems for two years what will your breeder actually do if worse comes to worst and your dog does develop one of these health problems? Will they take back the dog and exchange it for another? Will they re-imburse you the purchase price? Will they help pay for treatment? All that being said however, remember that a good breeder is placing the welfare of the puppy first, above both your and their own interests. What may seem to be very strict and overly possessive terms actually shows their commitment to the proper care and lifetime custody of "their" dogs. Hope this helps. |
