Why are the drug counters all the way in the back?

I got an email that had this ponderism in it:

Only in North America...do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions, while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front?

Kind of humorous. But it did get me thinking.

I think that this goes back to when "drug stores" were small operations. The druggist was the owner of the store and had an elevated perch so he could see the whole store while behind the counter.

And why is the booze up front in grocery stores.......you'd think those who are going to steal it would like a good running start from the back of the store.
Good Question, Ron...

They make you walk all the way to the back...and, most of the time make you wait 10- 20 minutes for your meds...That way you walk around the store cuz you're bored and think time will pass quicker...then buy stuff you didn't really need, want..but buy anyway....(or at least thats what I do.....)
Security.

Harder to hold up the Pharmacy when you have to traipse through the whole store.
I think it's to force you to walk past all of the junk you really don't want, but impulse buy anyway.
And as far as grocery stores, if you notice all the healthy food is on the perimeter of the store, produce, dairy, meat, deli. And all the processed junk is right in the middle. It's all marketing. It's how they getcha!
It's right in the front of both of my major grocery stores.
The overly developed CVS that recently took over our town, has a drive-thru.

This is the first drive-thru pharmacy in your area??? 8O We have Walgreens on every corner with drive-thrus. CVS tried to take over, but couldn't beat out Walgreens in this area.

Yes, we live in a mostly victorian town (about 1500 homes) with not much room to expand. The CVS development plan was highly contentious among the residents. I haven't used the drive thru yet, but it certainly is convenient to shop there.

We have one of each at nearly every major intersection.

I'm trying to count - from my house...5 mile radius...oh heck I give up. At least 8 of each.
I used to think about the location of the pharmacy when my father, who had difficulty walking, used to have to walk to the back of Meijer's to get his meds. He refused to use a power cart. He said they where usually either all used or they wheren't charged.

The worse pharmacy I have ever been in is in Titusville Florida...it is a Wal Green's on State Rd 50 and US !. The pharmacy is in the back of the store and the wait is usually at least an hour or longer. The pharmacist seemed to make many mistakes and seem to enjoy arguing with the customer. This is the pharmcey my daughter has to use, due to the fact they are one of the few that carry one particular med she is on. She is very ill most of the time and sitting in the store does not make things easier for her. I cringe everytime we have to go there.
Ain't it the truth?! I HATE that you have to walk all the way to the
back. It's bad enough when you yourself are feeling horrible,
but when you have to bring your 3 year old who has a bad cold,
snotty glazed donut face and an earache, that gets to be too much.

Are there really that many pharmacy hold-ups? Doesn't seem to
justify the torture to the regular customers!

Helen, any pharmacy should be able to get your daughter's meds. Maybe she could talk to another pharmacy and they could order it. A pharmacy where she wouldn't have to wait. Or maybe she could do mail order?
Privacy - I wish.
How private is it when the pharmacist is yelling your name
and/or discussing your medication in front of all the other
people waiting for their stuff? I agree it shouldn't be
happening, but it has happened to me more than once.
Unfortunately I think privacy is an illusion.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! My answer was a tad sarcastic  Although I do think that was the original "intent" That and making you walk through the store so you buystuff while you wait.
