Favorite Scissors and Brushes

I want to create a B-day wish list and was wondering which scissors and brushes are popular in this forum. Please state brand name and size and possibly where to buy them if PetEdge does not carry them. Thank you.
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Do you have the Feb 2008 Petedge catalog?
p.50 brushes -Hindes with standard or long pins, #1 All Systems w/ the molded black handle, PSI pin brush,
p.49 combs - a 2 sized - medium to coarse, also one with wide teeth is handy.

I have a scissors I like - C-MON#06841 made by Peter J. Michels Inc, Lancaster, Pa.

Of course #1 would be a grooming table and some kind of dryer. :D :D
thank you. I'll earmark those.
I love the Hindes pin brush, seems more durable then the #1All systems pin brush, that one did not last anywhere near as long as the hindes do. I also have mason/pearson bristle brushes, wide tooth metal comb and a smaller metal comb. Scissors mine a german made surgical stainless steel (Whal is the brand), a straight shank one and a curved shank one for rounding off the feet. I also have thinning scissors one sided for trimming as they don't show the scissor cuts in the back coat. There all the same brand, expensive, but you get what you pay for as they last and last, my first good pair goes back 20 years and on the odd occassion every so often I send them off for professional sharpening. Worthwhile investment in at least one really good pair of scissors.

I dread adding up the equipment value in my grooming box that has accumulated over the years, but buy good quality and you have them forever, especially if you are showing your sheepie .
thank you. I was considering the Geib scissors. They are German made. Are those the ones you are talking about?
The brand I have is "WHAL" most of the German Made scissors are top quality. So they should be great  :D
My favorite brush is the Chris Christensen 27 mm pin brush. I have the Hindes and the #1 All Systems, too and like those as well but if I had to pick one to take on a deserted island, I'd take the Christensen one (and a satellite phone. :))
I'm also a fan of the Chris Christensen brushes. Same one as ^^.
Where is your favorite place to purchase the Chris Christensen brushes?
Her website. There's rarely brushes on ebay, although they appear... and there aren't many options as far as prices.

This WAS also Bosley's favourite. He has an obsession with chewing wood...Hadn't had it more than 3 days and he "christened" it...
My favorite pin brush is the black #1AllSystems with 27mm pins. My favorite comb is the resco combination comb, and my favorite scissors are the cazman masterpiece shears... love em.
The resco combination is mr. j's favorite and what we use the most b/c it tends to be laying around more than other combs.

Ooooh another website to check out. Thanks.

The Resco combs seem to be everyone's favorite. Now a must have on my list. To be safe, I have both the Hindes brush and the #1 A.S. on the list.

I use PetEdge most of the time but if they don't have something I got to PPE Pet Supplies

I got my Dematting Rake from them because PetEdge didn't have it.

I've looked at he cazman masterpiece and they don't seem to have a 10". Do all of you use a smaller one? I read somewhere a 10" straight and a 7 1/2 curved.
I prefer Chris Christenson combs and brushes because the ends of the pins have no ball tips and they are polished so they won't scratch the skin. I tried out a #1 All Systems brush, but the ends felt sharp to me so I opted for the Chris. Both the combs and brushes Chris sells have a nice coating on them. It's not teflon--I had a teflon comb and it was flaking off in a week. They're coated with a very shiny chrome-looking stuff that allow the pins to glide through the coat more easily. You'll use less detangler and have less breakage. They also come guaranteed for workmanship. If you take good care of them they'll last forever, but if you loose some pins in your brush (you never will, but if ever) they will replace it. Cherrybrook.com is the eastcoast distributer for Chris Christenson.
thank you. I am updating my list with every post
I'm so excited. i just bought a crapload of stuff from the same seller on ebay. I always think new products will help me WANT to groom.

So, I'm actually excited about brushing Yuki.

A Face/Finishing comb
Large Dog nail clippers
Kolestral (to help with those flyaways when doing topknot for my maltese)
another Chris Christensen Oval Gold Pin Brush 27 mm (last one is old now)
then another Chris Christensen Pin Brush that's 20mm
Mink Oil to make coat shiny and silky (maltese)
Mr. Groom for the OES

400 puppypads (obviously not for the big furkid)

Hopefully it comes w/o a receipt so I don't have to explain the cost.
please let me know how you like some of the products you just received. I keep modifying my list
Add some more white on white (Chris christensen) to that list. Figured I should take advantage of the free shipping I'm getting. Once I start, I can't stop. It's like me and food.
I use Mason & Pearsons brushes with natural bristles, I have a no name wire brush which extreamly good, as a slicker brush I use a DoggyMan from Japan and lastly all my scissors come from the company Jaguar.

Lots of luck with your wish list
I have Infiniti 10" curved and straight shears from Shear Delight. They were about $200 each. They may be a bit big for most people but they work fine for me.

At a show recently, my sister just bought 8-1/2" curved and straight Geib Gators for her OES. They're excellent shears and guaranteed for life. These would be a nice size for general OES grooming. They were around $75 each.

My thinning shears are Geib Katana and Kenchii Five-Star, 38 & 48 tooth. I like them both although the Geibs were pricier. Kenchii's are nice all-around shears for about 1/3 the cost of the Geibs.

My best advice is to avoid any "no name" shears and always "try before you buy". Most dog shows have at least one shears vendor where you can feel what fits your hand best. Spend as much as you can afford for the grooming you'll be doing. And once you get a nice collection of tools, take excellent care of them and store them properly. I've never been disappointed by spending a bit too much money on tools but have often wished I'd spent a little more.
I also like the T Chris Shristensen brush - 27 mm that I like and the Resco #80 wide tooth comb - I got these from Cherrybrook as PetEdge did not have them. You might want a slicker brush for paws - I have the # 1 All System that is small so I can hide it in my hand (grooming paws is not Miley's favorite thing).

I've used your scissors and they're much, much more than fine! As soon as I took one snip, I turned to Nita and said "Are these like $300 shears?" You can just feel the difference. I know it isn't necessary for everyone but, boy, they sure are nice!
I keep adjusted my Birthday list with every new post.

Next question, Zach trimmed Abi for me and I need to add to my list either a rake or stripping knife to thin out undercoat in shoulders and neck. Which do you all prefer? Mandy, if you have either I will look at them in Apr.
Thanks again.

Thanks Stewart. Which scissors/shears? And do you have a link? I keep coming up with horse saddles when I search for Jaguar. Thank you. BTW I've missed chatting with you. You have been a bit of a recluse. :?

Kenchii's are nice all-around shears for about 1/3 the cost of the Geibs. I am familiar with Geib. Where did you find Kenchii's?

My mother would agree with you.

The Mars Coat King-- you can't beat it. It's a great undercoat stripper and good for shaping, which I guess can be very similar depending on your goal!

10 Blade Med? This won't let my newbie hands strip guard hairs right?
No, especially if you stay further away from the root and don't use a heavy hand. Do a demonstration for Roland first or have him take you through it the first time so you get a feel for it.

I love how I give all this advice but I won't even cut my own dog's hair. His shawl is almost touching the floor again. I'm kind of like the guy at the casino with the empty chip cup telling everyone how to play the games. Only I'm a girl.
Thank you, I will add it to my wish list. Roland,(aka Zach), unfortunately lives almost 4 hrs away. I will see him at a show though and will spy on him.

This is late notice, but there is a huge grooming event in Atlanta this weekend. http://www.atlantapetfair.com/ Click on "Trade Show" to see all the reps in attendance. The trade show is open to anyone but does have an admission fee of $10. You don't have to be a groomer to attend. I see Geib, Kenchii, Precision Sharps, Chris Christensen, Talyn Shears and lots of other interesting vendors. This would be a great opportunity to try before you buy!
I forget who was looking for it, but here is a link to Jaguar:

I went to look, and it says its for pet care professionals only. AND it doesn't say anywhere where the show is being held; it just says "At the Hilton". We probably have a dozen Hiltons in Atlanta....
On another site it indicates that the show is at the Hilton Atlanta Airport.

Last year I went to a similar show called PetQuest in Cincinnati. They considered "pet care professionals" as anyone involved with the care of animals, which qualified me. Taking care of my two OES as well as the occasional rescue dog IS a full-time job! Nobody will kick you out if you pay the admission fee.

Thank you, I was looking.
well I just got back from that Atlanta Pet Fair. It was small and dense and well worth the "sunday get in for free" admission.

I was looking for 3 lines of grooming products I've heard members talk about, and 2 of the lines reps were there. So I was able to buy items from Mr Groom and Chris Christiansen to try out. But I also got to shave a dog!!!!

I think I found the clippers I want. I got to try out German Red Clippers while at the show. Not inexpensive, but obviously well made. I've NEVER used a clipper before, and I insisted that I would ruin thier dog by trimming him. But they put the clippers in my hand, and the dog under them and then... magic. It was easy, and smooth and really nice to use! Here is the website: http://www.germanredclipper.com/

The vender that was showing them had a deal; if you buy the premium clipper online it comes with 3 blades; if you buy it from him you get a fourth blade. He also does any maintanance, repair and sharpening. I got his contact info and will be ordering from him when I'm ready to do so. I can share his info with anyone that is interested; just PM me.

Glad you got to check the show out... and free admission, no less! What a deal! :clappurple:

I've heard lots of great things about the German Red Clipper on the Groomers Forum. The biggest drawback is the initial expense and that the blades aren't interchangeable with any other brand of clippers. Another complaint is that they're heavy. They're obviously well-made and come with a great guarantee. Probably more clipper than most people would need for a couple time a year shavedown. I've really considered it for the extremely matted OES rescues but would rarely have a need for it with my own two dogs.

yeah; I came home and looked into other clippers; and saw its really a professional product. But I've got the 2 OES girls and hope to add more in the future (shhh! Don't tell the boyfriend!) so I don't really mind that its a bit "over the top". And having used it at the show, I really felt it was quite light in my hand; so the wieght was a non-issue. But I walked away not buying it, just taking the gentleman's information, knowing I'd need to do more research. But I was quite impressed at the show with it.
