Tennessee Sheepie- Grigsby

I just sent this on to Ingrid but maybe someone here is interested in
checking him out... maybe to adopt or possibly foster/transport/etc. for
Southeast? I tried to call the shelter which indicates they also serve as
Animal Control but didn't get an answer so I have no idea about his temperament or health.

"...We function as animal control for the city of Lewisburg and Marshall County..."

Grigsby looks absolutely miserable. :(
I hope someone down there can go get him.
OMG that is absoutly heartbreaking... I hope Ingrid can help him.
I tried to reach them but no answer..........I am on my way to get him out anyway, I just hope I can find someone there when I get there.

Antoinette

(forgot to sigh in)
I have everything crossed that can be crossed for you.. Good Luck...

Let us know.
Ingrid quickly wrote back... I'm sure she's checking on him.

There are a lot of sheepies going through rescues lately... if anyone is
considering fostering, please contact OES rescue. They're always in
need of loving and dedicated foster families who are often the saving
grace for a dog in trouble.
Good luck to you Antoinette!
I sent Ingrid a note so she knows you're heading over there.

I couldn't get them on the phone either...
I tried a few times but just got the answering machine.
They were probably tending to the dogs.
Ugghhh poor guy! Thanks for going to get him!
I have it under control. One of my volunteers works in Nashville and can get him. I only live about an hour away.
They are not open until later. Please guys don't run off without talking to me first. They might not let you have this dog besides you need to get the right papers. You might need to show the 501c document.
We got to do this the right way, this dog was not in danger.
SInce they were closed, I emailed them.
Lets not be in a hurry, this needs to be done the right way.
I just received an email from the shelter and they will not let the dog go without the neuter. They want $71. to pull the dog.
I appreciate the help, but we have to slow down and do things right.
This dog was in no danger at all.
Sorry... I shouldn't have posted this. I usually just contact rescue
privately. I'd never gotten such a lightening fast responses from both
rescue and a private party. :o
I can see it now, Antoinette is cirlcing the shelter, banging on windows, trying to catch the attention of someone with a key to the OES crate...
Sue wrote and said it indicates that he's been adopted...
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/dis ... d=10120654

Hoping he's on his way to being cleaned up and loved up. :D
Hopefully the adopter will find this site. I love seeing how happy the pups are after they have a loving family!
Hi everyone,

Grisby is safe :
I did speak with the shelter this morning so I was set up for them to meet me there to pick up the dog . I say dog still since we do not know what it is yet ! The mats are so bad no one could tell. :(
The shelter was the most heart breaking place I had ever seen. It is a small mobile home type building with a back door. You walk out the door to 3 concrete walls and a back gate to the outside, the walls are not all the way up and not enclosed it was 13 degrees and the ground was wet dirt with a little cedar shavings .
There are two big cages (only 2) it is dark no sun or light can get in. It is wet and very cold In there .All the dogs they find are put in together (big ~little ~ puppy's ~all of them) .
They have a pick up truck with a cage tied to the bed and that is how they pick up the dogs and bring them to the "Shelter" .
They bring the dogs in the back and put them in the cages. No vet check nothing.
Every Friday the local vet goes and puts who ever is still there to sleep. END OF STORY. Then they start fresh on Monday again.
They do not take anything but cash cause too many people have given bad checks.
This place is run by 2 men (please let me make very clear they are nice people, just doing their job). They take a few pictures of dogs they think people may want but the others don't even get a chance. There were at least 15 dogs there that will be put to sleep tomorrow.

Grisby's story is : A local farmer called animal control to pick the dog up .It had been coming around their farm for almost a year they said and trying to join in with there pack of dogs that they used to work on their farm.
It had been eating their food and sleeping in the woods . After a while it seamed to be getting confused and running down the road in front of their farm ,so they called the pound to pick it up so it would not get hit by a semi truck. The shelter picked it up and put it in the cage yesterday ...

Now~ My husband and I get there and I cry when I see what I see ~so he sends me OUT.
I fill out the adoption form and Bob (my husband) comes out with this matted crying dog. We thought my husband may have stepped on it's foot but no it was crying because his EARS and EYES are infected so bad they are swollen CLOSED.(I now believe that is way it was running confused on the main road it could not open its eyes or hear ).
We could not find his eyes or his ears and we will not talk about the rear end.
All I can say is the dog has been impacted for a very long time.
He was crying in the car so bad that we went straight to a vet the men at the shelter told us about that was not to far .
We had to leave him there. They are going to put him under anesthesia (spelling) in the morning and unclog his ears and eyes and rear. They are going to shear him/her down and give it a antibiotic shot and all its shots it needs . They will also Neuter or spay (they will know more after the shave down) .
They will do blood works to see if everything is ok first to do the neuter /spay .

It was so hard to leave the baby there but we had no choice.
I got to say this dog would not leave my husbands side and my husband was very upset that we had to leave it there but I feel in my heart it was the best thing for the dog. They said we can pick it up on Saturday morning, so I ask that everyone says a pray for this baby, he/she really needs it.

Oh.... and I need help picking out a name , Grisby was just what the computer picks out when they post a dog on the site.
This baby has never had a name.
So think of girl and boy names.

Antoinette
p.s... sorry this is soooo long !
I forgot to mention this... you might ask the vet if they think this baby is strong enough to endure surgery. If not, maybe they'll put it off for a bit until he/she is stronger/healthier. It sounds like this baby has got some things going on and you want to make sure he/she can survive the surgery. I'm a little concerned about what they'll find under that badly matted and poopy fur on his/her bottom. :(

Hugs to you Antoinette for a GREAT save!
I'd be more concerned about it getting shots....Innoculations are only supposed to be given to "healthy" dogs. The stuff that is injected is live virus, so a dog with a weak immune system can get really sick.

When Dixie was seized she got shots etc immediately by the SPCA. My vet and I are certain that is what put her over the edge....She was soooooo bad after that....it took months for her little body to get back into shape to fight infections etc.

I would hold off the shots as long as possible, and just keep him/her away from dogs for a while...

I will be watching this story unfold.......Thank you soooooo much for helping this little one!
I'm so glad you went to get this one. I will include him in my prayers.
Good Job!!!!!
Wow. Thank God you got him out. Keep us posted and let us know if there's anything we can somehow do to help.

Kristine
Thank you for getting him/her out!!! :clappurple:
Saying prayers for this baby. :plead:
Wow for me too. What a day. I hope he is OK.
Poor dog, sounds like he/she has had a rough time of it. :(
There are angels of all kind and you and your husband are the best!!!
I hope you are able to save this dog and give it the good life that all dogs are entitled to have. (No reason of any kind for abusing an animal)
It seems like you two are the best hope it has.
You will be in my prayers.
Take care and good luck.
Thank you for being there for Grisby, prayers and thoughts are with him and you
Oh Antoinette! This story has me in tears. Thank you so much for getting him/her out of there and getting the help so despartely needed. Please keep us posted. :plead:
Wow. I am in awe. I can't wait to hear about the vet checkup and really hope for the best for this survivor. Thanks so much for what you are doing!!

Ooooooooh... that makes me want to cry.
It's so perfectly appropriate Darcy.
Can you think of a nickname so the neighbors won't think "what the heck?"
That is a very apropos name for him, Darcy. I like it, but how is it pronounced?
i think its pronounced bug-ul noz.....

i like noz...nozzie or bugul.....
Thank you for saving this poor thing. God Bless You!!!
OMG I AM CRYING RIGHT NOW FOR THIS POOR BABY ? ANYTHING I CAN DO? THANKS FOR SAVING HIM. MAYBE YOU NEED TO CALL HIM LUCKY
He made it through the surgery !!! :D
It took all of them there at the vets office Friday to work on this poor 'BOY' yes he is a he ! :)
Blood work was normal , he is now Neutered and on his way to being a spoiled sheepie . :D

As for the ears , the left is not so bad but the right was very, very bad. As they soaked it to open it up and cut the hair out Green stuff started to pour out. He will be having to stay at the vets till Monday for some heavy antibiotic shots for the ear.

Now to the DOG BITES ! ( yes dog bites) As they shaved him down they found that he was attacked by other dogs. The top of his head and the top of that ear have bites on them.

He is all bones and ribs but yet weighed in at 62lbs....So I am hoping he will turn out to be a big healthy boy some day.

BUT .... After all this the vet got on the phone with me and said he has never in all his day seen such a SWEET dog. :hearts:

They are all in love with him .The vet was so amazed after what that poor boy had to go through he still was trying to kiss and love all over them.
I am so grateful to everyone for the prays they sent his way~ he needed them!

We went this morning to visit him.
The vets office allowed us to walk him out side and then we spent about a hour loving all over him .
He will sleep the rest of the weekend and get his ear worked on and antibiotic shots .

The vet that has been caring for him is nicked named 'Howie' ,so we thought it would be nice to name the boy after him. :D
We will give it a try~ he seems to like it .

Well, here are the pictures (After approval) we took out side the vets office this morning I will post more on Monday .............

Antoinette
Antoinette,

You and your husband are wonderful! I hope *Howie* continues to have a speedy recovery. Keep us up to date on his progress.
OMG. What a story! You are indeed an angel to rescue him. It sounds like your husband is going to have a new love. Bless you and the sweet little boy. I just love happy endings.
Antoinette... he's beautiful. He doesn't even look like the same dog they
showed on Petfinder. They did a great job cleaning him up and tending to
him. Such stunning blue eyes.

"Howie"... a fun name for a boy that looks so serious at the moment.
I hope he'll soon start to grow into it. :D
Holey
CCCCOOOWWW!!!

Antoinette - we've both had crazy, sad, but exciting Januarys!!!!

I have to read this whole story again!

I just saw Harley & Junior in photos and didn't even know you were on this site. I recognized them straight away and then sent you a private message about their brother/half brother Jasper. I've been amiss and couldn't find your email on my home computer!

You are an angel - sounds like Howie was in GRAVE danger if someone wouldn't have adopted him. Are you going to keep him or just help him recover? I can't believe the story.

So happy for you and Howie...yayyyyyy!

And Junior and Harley look amazing - when they sit together, the eyes are amazing (two blue in the middle).

Jane
Where are Howie's pictures????
I know - I'm not seeing them yet either...but the last post was just a few minutes ago....will be looking!
Where are those moderators/administrators when we need them??!!

We need our pictures!!! :D

And that is cool - I didn't know your dogs were brothers. They do look related though!
HI Jane !!!!!! I will PM you back ..... :D

The pictures have not been approved yet . Jaci seen them cause I sent them regular email.... :)

They should be approved soon.

Antoinette
OH My God Jane .... My heart is breaking ,I just watched the You~tube . I will email you .

For everone who did not know :

Oh... my... gosh.
REAL brothers? Wow.
They ALL seem to have a thing for dairy products
doing the same dance where are the pics???????????
"Thanks Jill :) "

These are the pictures of 'Howie'.... He does look very serious right now but we realized when we took the pictures out side that was the first time he has been able to see in God knows how long and his eyes are having trouble producing tears right now from having the 'hard dirty hair' growing in his eyes.

This is the first time I read this thread all the way through. Antoinette, you're awesome. This poor guy, I'm so sad for all the pain he must've been in with his eyes and ears. It's heartbreaking. He has that look in his eyes like all he wants is to be loved, too, which makes it all the more sad. How could anyone have ever turned their back on this guy?

What's your plan with him? Are you bringing him back to your place?
thanks so much for giving Howie alota loving in what must have been a very miserable life up to this point
ButtersStotch wrote:

Yep , I am going to bring him back here and love all over him !!! :ghug:

:D :D :D

Antoinette
Wow he really looks good. It can be such a horror to not know what's beneath the fur. I hope his rear is ok too. He could've gotten some corneal abrasions, but his eyes seem decent. The bites look relatively partially healed? I wonder what the prognosis is on the ears regarding function. We're still battling the ear infection - those are so stubborn especially if the dog doesn't like ear drops & flushing.

I was thinking about him all night. The story of the shelter reminded me so much of a neighbor my friend had about 17 years ago. He was a dog catcher and had a ice cream truck sort of thing and would bring home all these dogs every night. Kind of how you would call someone for pest removal. Everyone kept calling the police on him for bring home 10 dogs in his truck and leaving them there overnight. Not that the other shelter is that bad, but it seems more like a county service to pick up dogs and exterminate them rather than actively rehome them. Thank goodness the guy knew he was an OES and not just some scruffy muffin. Not that even a scruffy muffin shouldn't be loved, but this was his chance at being listed. That one sentence description - not much to go on to get someone to look at him though - not many people would adopt such a dog when they saw him. But you certainly saw the diamond in the rough. I'm so glad you decided to help him. Also, so many questions come up as to where the heck he came from. He's beautiful.

I will talk to you soon! Can't wait to catch up. I just got back from the welding shop.

Jane
What an amazing story  With a wonderful ending, Now Howwie will get all the love he deserves :hearts: Thank you for rescuing this boy :D
Thank you for being so kind. I know your kindness will be repaid a thousand times over. Please hug that boy for me when you can finally bring him home.
I'm so glad I'm reading this at the happy ending part. Thanks Antoinette and hubby! What a horrible thing this sweet boy has gone through. Just breaks my heart. Looks like your hubby may have a new best friend. How sweet.
Even the "after" pictures make me cry. Just thinking about what this poor fellow has endured breaks my heart. How can people be so unkind? Thank you, Antoinette, for getting him the help he needs. Bless you, bless you, bless you.
did you pick up howie today is he home?? give him kisses from me
I keep thinking about the farmer too - I wonder how long he knew of the dog and why he didn't report it sooner. Wierdness. It's a very surreal scenario with a "Sheepdog gone Wild"....Hard to imagine.

I often think super furry animals that are domesticated animals have the worst chance at survival because of the matting. I'm also glad Howie has been so wonderful personality wise even in the vet's office which can freak some dogs out.

I read somewhere that domesticated, friendly pigs go 'feral' quite quickly if they escape into the wild and take on new characteristics personality wise and physically (more fur, big tusks). So bizarre but glad that dogs or especially OES's don't do that (grow big tusks, get mean and double their fur length).

Ok, my imagination is running wild tonight. Hope everything is going well with him.

Jane
Yes the beautiful boy is home wit us. :D
I am shocked because he is totally house broken . He is so sweet and gentle and seems to be well trained . 8O

We are having one problem though (maybe someone has some advice for us ) .Howie is great with Harley and Howie is great with junior Howie is even great with Claudie. BUT Howie is scared to death when he is with Harley and Junior together. :(

The vet found the puncture wounds on the poor boy head and said he was attacked by other dogs, (probable trying to get food) so I think Howie feels threatened when both my boys are in the room with him.
He must think he is being surrounded . The poor boy was shaking .I felt sooooooo bad I just held him. :(
I don't want this poor boy to be scared, he has been through so much already.

As for his health ~100% he is amazing , all blood works came back great and he is healing sooooo fast from his wounds. :)

Antoinette
What as great story, thanks so much for all you did for howie.
Poor baby...I guess maybe you should just let him be with one or the other until he learns to trust again. Your guys won't know what to make of it though...gonna take some time. :ghug:
I'm so glad he's home with you, Antoinette, and doing well. These guys never cease to amaze me with how eager they are to forgive and move on after having been through so much horror.

He probably is traumatized and will need time to readjust to being in a pack. I'd say the best thing is to allow him to be with just one of the boys at a time until he initiates play. But, I'm no expert, of course.
I can't believe I missed this whole post until now!

Antoinette and Bob, you two are fantastically wonderful people! :ghug: Thank you, thank you, thank you for rescuing Howie. He is such a beautiful boy :hearts: and my heart breaks thinking about what he's gone through just to survive.

I can well imagine how having Harley and Junior in the same room with him would scare him to pieces. But as he settles in more, and with as intelligent as he seems to be, I'm sure he'll realize they are no threat.

As Tammy said - bless you, bless you, BLESS YOU!!
:D. All prayers for a solid recovery and a new life. :ghug:
i just saw the pics of howie 7 days later what a diffrence a week makes.. how is he doing ? what sweet soulful blue eyes he has.
I love the stories like this on this forum. It completly renews my faith in people. I know all dogs are great but sometimes it's hard to tell who the nice folks are....Antoinette, you and your husband are a couple of real nice folks. Thanks for saving a good 'ol boy's life.
All the brothers really do resemble each other.
Howie, perfect name! My heart broke when I read his story. But your kindness and determination to save that boy brought a smile to my face and gave me another day's worth of faith in mankind. :D
Sorry it has taken me so long to add this update .

Howie is coming into his own now. He has a beautiful personality .He just loves to cuddle and be loved. :hearts:
He is not very fond of Junior .We realized since junior is a barker (just so very verbal  ) Junior makes Howie nervous . :twitch:

These pictures are 7 days later .He is healing great .Take a look ,he is such a Cutie. :hearts:

Antoinette,
You take great photos!
I love the one w/(is that your husband?) hugging Howie!
Howie is gorgeous (love those eyes)!
I hope he finds a forever home as wonderful as his foster home!

Thanks for all you do!

How do you embed photos like that in a message? I tried using the former code and it won't come up. I'm not sure I'm supposed to add the _url or just leave it alone ending in .jpg. between the [img]'s.

Anyway, he's really beautiful. He looks like a powder blue tang to me ( a saltwater fish). Three boys in any household would be challenging. Hope he's recovering well. Do you have any idea how old he is?

Jane

Howie is beautiful! you and your husband are very special people!
Oh he looks so much better already! Great photo of Bob hugging him. It just melts my heart. This boy needs all the love & affection he can get to continue his recovery and he's in just the right place for it. Bless you both.
awwww, what great pictures..he does look much much better!
:D So glad to see how well he looks! :ghug: to all especially Howie!

What a great ending to a sad beginning - thanks for giving such a good loving dog a new wonderful beginning with a caring loving family. And, so lucky to have his 'brothers' to share his happy life. I love good endings. I've never been able to decide if our rescues have found fortune with us or we have been so lucky to find them.
I just posted pictures and updates in a new thread in the chit-chat section since Howie is now longer needing rescue . :D

Please visit the 'Howie Boy' thread................
