Yes she should of, usually you start them at around 6 months on the monthly heartworm medication.
You will need a blood test first to see that there is no Micro filia in the blood before you can start the heartworm preventative medication. I am surprised at your vet for not advising to start her on it earlier |
I guess it depends on your vet and where you live.
Of the five vets in town, only one encourages heartworm meds (but then, he pushes every new med and vaccine that becomes available). The other four vets feel heartworm meds aren't necessary here unless you take your pooch out of the area or have him in close confinement with other dogs. It has something to do with the nighttime temperatures and mosquito patterns here ... Anyway, after my Gus was a guest at the local Bed and Biscuit last summer, I did insist on a heartworm test. Our vet predicted the results would be negative, and they were. |
Our vet recommends year round heartworm prevention here in the Boston suburbs.
Then again he sells the pills at a good profit, so there is a profit motive in play. I don't think that's why he recommends it, but one can never be 100% sure. (He gives up to a 20% discount if you show him an internet pricing ) |
Heartworm meds not only prevent heartworms, but other worms as well. I don't give them to the boys in the icy cold months but as soon as the temps start up above freezing, I start them again. My one guy is a worm magnet so it's a lot easier to give him meds to prevent than treat the problem later. |
next question I have a friend that has a gaint schanauzer pup 8 months, he had worms at 3 months old, LOTS, o]was on meds a few times to get them all.... now is fur on the top of his back is thinner and not as nice as the rest of him.... can that be from the worms?? and if so will his fur get better??? |
