Is there anything I can do to change the smell. We bathe him every two weeks. |
|
How funny! I guess there are worse things that they could smell like. We bathe our's every 2 weeks as well...do you trim the hair that grows between the pads? With Jack and Annablle, they have so much, that it was keeping moisture in and was irritating the pads. I never smelled their feet, but I bet that with the moisture trapped in there that the smell could be really bad. I don't know if any other sheepies have the same problem, but it is an idea.
Good luck, Stormi and co. |
well just like us uprights dogs feet can and will stink, well unless you like the smell of corn chips!! could be dry skin....maybe lube them up w/ lotion and then put baggies on his feet,to let the lotion sink in..... it is kind of funny tho!!feet smelling like corn chips!! |
I doubt it is dry skin in between the toes, probably moisture stuck in there, like stormi said. If you trim the fur there and maybe put a bit of powder in there to dry it out it might help. |
Yeah, so do my dogs'. Good suggestiosn re: keeping the hair trimmed and the paws clean. Don't go overboard with the powder as they lick their feet and you don't want them injesting or breathing the talc. Maybe corn starch would be better??? |
That is sooo funny! I'm 47 and back when I was a teenager I used to say that all dogs feet smelled like Fritos. And all dogs feet still smell like Fritos. I think that's just normal dog feet smell. |
Ok ok... Whats wrong with me? I *like* the smell of corn chips! Deborah |
Yes, I love doggie feet smell too.....Fritos, exactly. Another smell I love is the one right behind the nose.......almost like moth balls. Only MO has a strong scent there, other dogs' it is much fainter. And to continue this line.........I like ear smell......when they are clean!! That mousey smell, no, that's bad!
Sure glad to find others who like sniffing their dog's too.......turn around if fair play! bunnyboss |
Yes, his feet smell like cornchips---Fritoes---and it would be a BIG bag!!!
I laughed right out loud! I have said that for years (even before we had an OES!!! -- we had a cocker!) I have always said his "pawsies" smell like fritoes! My husband has just looked at me like I am crazy! I just loved seeing this posted on the OES boards! Yeah! I'm not crazy!!! Thanks for making my day!!! |
Dogs have scent glands in their feet and this is the musky odor that you are smelling. |
We call them "Fritoes" too! I love that we are all sooo weird. When we let Chelsea out of her crate in the morning, her little hut smells like a corn chip factory, so whoever lets her out yells "here comes the Frito Bandito!" Warning the rest of the sleeping house to wake up and be ready for the OES pounce. Up. |
Sometimes when i am hungry and find that i am with out anything to eat i will smell my dogs feet just to alleviate the hunger pain.
Love those corn chips! |
LOL! This is so ridiculous! That is just the natural doggy smell! Dogs use their paws to mark their territory, also, and while I'm sure we can't tell the diff, they probably can! You have a dog that "wipes" their feet after going? Thats because there are unique scent glands in their paws, nad they are marking...jeez! Let it go! |
I thought I was losing my mind...Lucy always smells like corn chips. Her smell is over powering. YUCK!! I thought from previous posts it was her ears so I washed with medicated powder several days a week and then brought her back to the vet. I bathed her to get rid of the smell only to find ....two days after a bath boom she smells again!! It really is an over powering smell. I know that you really only have to bath a dog two to three times a year and that didn't fit the smell that came off of her!! I could bath her every week. I figured she was rolling in the rabbit dung that I wasn't aware of somewhere in the backyard. and getting all stinky again! So it is her smell. WOW! Good to know, what can we do about it? It is interesting to note that it was alway the worst when she was let go in the backyard. So we have been going out of our way not to put her in the back yard even though it is a nice size with a 6 foot fence! LOL!! Ignorance is not always bliss!! |
Again, i had to immediately laugh and think about this post...I gave Walter a big hug today and smelled food. Mind, you, not corn chips, but none other than the distinctive, ever pleasing scent of...WONTON SOUP!!!
I was laughing out loud as I asked him which Chinese buffet he had just been to I don't think it's anything other than the combo of his shampoo, grass, and various other things. Still had to giggle when I thought of you guys and the corn chips. Cheers! |
It is a dog thing. People on my basset forum comment on the same thing.
Then a couple months ago I was in the barn, and noticed the same fritos smell from Freddie, our llama~!! I just laughed - I thought I was going crazy- LOL! |
LOL!! Both of my sheepies feet smell like absolutely nothing...unless they step in something
My Boxer, Roxie had corn chip feet though So does Peanut. |
Yesterday I was snuggling Jack and took his foot to smell...expecting the usual Frito-foot........absolutely nothing. I was so disappoointed |
Just for fun, I thought I'd post a question on the web about dogs' feet smelling like Fritos! Imagine my surprise when I saw all these comments about Frito feet! I thought I was the only one who noticed it! I think it's cute; why should we try to eliminate the smell? Note: It's a stronger odor when dogs are sleeping. |
Hello all.
Very interesting comments from many of you. My Beagle's paws smell like Fritos. People looked at me cross-eyed when I would tell them about it (even the Vet). But now I see Im not insane. It would get really pungent after he comes in from the rain or snow. Unfortunately, he would lick and bite his feet until they bleed. Poor Digger. The Frito aroma starts around Fall. He would also scratch and chew his body raw. I asked the Vet about this and she said its a yeast infection within the body. The water just agitated the situation. We gave him steriods and antibiotics. This helped a little as long as he was on the meds. But, once off it would come back with a vengence. Digger's nickname in the Fall and Winter season is "Frito Boy". If anyone has any advice to help Digger's condition, pls msg me!! LOL!!! I must apologize to everyone. I was not aware this is a sheepdog site!! LOL!! I was yahooing this Frito Paw Phenomenon and came across this site. Oh well!!! Take care all!! |
Didn't we have this discussion before? And we are all so sick Just what are we all doing smelling our dogs feet Ah, I just love those little feeties
And as I said before, better than my husband's |
When a dogs feet smell like corn chips it is yeast. Too much corn or grains in their diet. |
I doubt that is right. My dogs (and Llama) eat absolutely NO corn.
The llama gets no grain, and the dogs have very little grain in their feed. |
Anonymous wrote: When a dogs feet smell like corn chips it is yeast. Too much corn or grains in their diet.
Maybe too many Fritos? |
Anonymous wrote: When a dogs feet smell like corn chips it is yeast. Too much corn or grains in their diet.
Not likely, not even eating a bucket load of yeast will actually cause a yeast problem in a dog. A yeast problem occurs when the natural balance is out of whack, either dietary or immune. Pro biotics can help restore natural gut flora, and if that doesn't work a vet needs to figure out just what the immune system is reacting to. I do not think the smell of a dogs' foot has anything to do with yeast, but more likely it's just sweat. Smelling your dog's feet is like smelling someone's armpit Have fun! |

I don't know about the Fritto thing but...
We are currently treating a dog for a yeast problem so I know how horrible this condition can be. Panda had been on antibiotics for about 4-5 months because of recurrent bladder infections until a bladder defect was (cautiously optimistic) surgically corrected in mid-February. Panda had started frantically licking and chewing her feet leaving them sloppy-wet. http://oesusa.com/Yeast/1.jpg We asked the vet if we should test for yeast earlier this year but were told no. We were giving antihistamines all along and began giving her allergy shots more frequently because they thought it was her allergies. We picked up a "cocktail" of 3 different antihistamines on April 20th. We were to give her 3 to 5 antihistamines every 8 hours or a maximum of 15 daily. We gave it to her one day, then decided this just was NOT working and that we needed to take a different approach. We switched to Eagle Pack Holistic Select for the entire pack, started giving Nzymes which includes a probiotic and rubbed in Monistat on her feet for a couple of days (ask your vet first). She finally got relief. I keep the fur between the pads and toes trimmed short and spray her feet twice daily with a solution from Nzymes if I see her start to lick and this stops it. Though she still has some itching, it's been reduced by probably 90% and there is none of that insane chewing. She's been off all antihistamines for almost a month now. The vet said we probably hit the nail on the head that it was yeast. |
How hilarious!!!
I was just wondering about this the other day. I always thought that dogs pant because they can't sweat, but I SWEAR Sampson has sweaty paws, and they smell like cornflakes (maybe he's too little to smell like Fritos yet) lol. The Superstar poast killed me, Ron... I spit my Mt. Dew out, lol. I agree, we're a bunch of weirdos sniffing our dogs ears, paws, snouts, etc... lol. Brooklyn needs to get her teeth cleaned really bad, and when she licks herself, it makes her all stinky and everyone complains about the stinky dog... but secretly, I kinda like her stinkiness, lol. All my dogs love to be rocked in the rocking chair, and sometimes when I rock Brooklyn, I sniff her stinky paws, without even really thinking about it. |
Sweaty paws sometimes happen when the dog is stressed or excited too.
This subject gave me a good laugh the first time I read it and a bigger laugh this time around I will add...I LOVE the smelly frito feeties of my puppy!!!And he seems to love my feeties too since he is always trying to pull the shoes off me!!! Do mine smell like Fritos to him |
But I landed on this web blog because I Ask.comed "why do my dog's feet smell like fritos?"
I'M VINDICATED! I'M AFFIRMED! I'm sending this web page to everyone who laughed at me when I said my dog's feet stink like corn chips! Especially my husband, who said to me "Have you been forgetting to take your medication again?" She is a lab, and she sometimes seems embarassed about her stinky feet, too! This is probably my fault because I sniff them and do the "pew! stinky feet!" thing, then she tucks her feet under chest and won't hold hands with me anymore. I give her a bath every month, or when can't sleep anymore because the entire bedroom room smells like a FritoLay factory! (she sleeps on the floor next to me) She does sometimes chew her feet or lick them which leaves them wet. I am going to follow the advice of the poster who used the yeast treatment to see if this helps. You guys are hilarious! Thanks for all this great information! |
I love the fact that my dog has frito toes. I love the way my dogs smell in general as long as they have not rolled in anything AWFUL,.. !
mAYBE DOG TOES SMELL LIKE fRITOES BECAUSE DOG FOOD IS MOSTLY CORN?. |
szelonk wrote: mAYBE DOG TOES SMELL LIKE fRITOES BECAUSE DOG FOOD IS MOSTLY CORN?. If your dog food is mostly corn, you need to find a new food. |
Okay, has anyone tried sausa for the frito feet |
^^^^^^^^^^^^
too funny Funny this came up because I was thinking of bumping this thread up. I love frito feet. |
I love my dog's feet smell. They always smell the same and I bath him every week or two. Gosh if I only bathed him a few times a year he'd smell like garbage. Jasper's feet smell like fresh popped popcorn. It reminds me also of the smell of a puppy. Anyway, I use baby shampoo with lavender and that makes his body smell great and is super gentle on his skin and fur - he really does smell like garbage if I wait longer than 2 weeks for a bath and he's mostly inside too.
OES seem to be smell and dirt magnets unlike a Viszlas etc... Also, I have rabbits and the droppings are very dry like hay balls and have no scent, so I doubt it's rabbits. Jasper would rather eat those bite sized morsels than roll in them...! He is a real freak sometimes. Corn chips is a new way to think about it. Sometimes I smell his feet on purpose because I'm so amazed at how popcorny they are. They are dry and trimmed too! |
I think dogs have the inability to sweat. |
gallatea wrote: I think dogs have the inability to sweat.
They can sweat through their paw pads. |
Mine smell like popcorn...... |
I ended up here because my boston terrier has smelly feet. I admit that it resembles fritos, but I don't really find the smell pleasant. Almost a "Bugles" kinda smell ( lol I don't like either corn product!). My dog is on a grain free diet and has no fur between the toes, so I doubt it's either of those issues. I have noticed most dogs have this odor, and I just was wondering about a safe deodorizer for the paws. |
Our first sheepie, BRANDON, had popcorn paws. I love the smell. Portage and ThePas had popcorn paws. Theeps had the strongest smell. Portage's are more subtle.
One of the first things I did when Hudson arrived was smell his little feet. Nope. Nada. I hope they develop that scent, but I'm not sure he will. Theepers had popcorn paws by the time he was eight weeks old. A colleague at work recently confessed to me that she loves smelling her dog's feet too. She says they are popcorn like, too. I never imagined anyone would find that smell offensive. I guess I'm just really weird. |
Seems all dogs feet stink ! ??? I tried washing my dogs feet in baking soda & water, IT DIDN"t work! For those of you who say they smell like corn chips, dip them in Salsa I'm going to the vet Dec 12, I'll find out whats up .
I can tell you that I cured the stinky Butt problem ( farting ) by putting (Natures Plus Say Yes To Beans) in the dog food at feeding time. It comes in capsules, just open them up & sprinkle on top of their food . A Staffordshire Bull Terrior, WILL glass your eye's when they let one go ! AND they love people so they stay CLOSE BY ! Good luck in your search for sweet feet ! |
My puppy is a year old and her feet just started to smell like this. So, do I just leave her feet alone, this is normal? |
We also have a dog with frito or corn chip feet and have been to the vets. The vet thought it could be allergies, but we haven't changed anything so we know it's not this. We've found that if you wash the dogs feet with soap and warm water, dry them and buy "Gold Bond Medicated Foot Powder" in a blue bottle it actually eliminates the corn or "frito" smell for a few days. The powder absorbs moisture between the toes in the pad of the foot where the fur is at. |
Yall need to relax about the dog paw smell issue. Maybe its weird but I actually like the way dog paws smell.....at least ones that haven't recently walked in things that don't smell nice. But really, RELAX! The "corn chip" smell isn't an issue in any way, shape, or form.
Dogs sweat only in their paws and no where else (hence the need to pant to cool down). The moisture that they secrete in their paws helps keep the pads nice and pliable and prevents them from becoming rigid and scaly. This also serves another purpose; leaving scent. The moisture helps transmit odor to the ground they walk on, leaving markers for other mutts. Yes marking is also done by urine and feces but foot odor is another way dogs know that another has been around. As I said I like the smell and when I give a good scratching I'll sneak a whif in. I have a mutt. My parents have a mutt. And my grandmother has a mini dasch. They all have a slightly different "corn chip" smell. Unless your dog incessantly chews and licks their paws, there's probably NOTHING WRONG. Also, I gotta say that vets know this. Any vet that offers treatment for corn chip paw smell isn't treating your dog, they're treating YOU. More often than not YOUR the real patient at the vet, not the pet. People freak about their pets health often more than their own. Or the vet just sees another opportunity to add to your bill and are taking it out of your ignorance. They may not be able to speak, but they CAN tell us when somethings wrong, just make sure your not making a mountain out of a smelly paw! |
Corn Chip Paws smell like heaven to me! |
I remember this post from years ago and think I may have been one to ask about the frito feet smelly feet of OES!
I LOVE the smell of all my doggys' feet! I guess its something you just get used to! |
For the majority of dogs whose feet smell like Fritos, they have the same problem as corn chips, corn. This smell tends to happen because of dog foods with corn in them. Corn isn't digestable, except the corn syrup but that's because it's turned into a digestable sugar. The corn just runs through the system stinking up the feet and then finding its way out. The only way to fix it is to go with a different food, the plus side is that they'll poop less. |

That is a thought but, sometimes my dogs feeties smell that way and they have no corn in their diet.. I think that is a form of yeast you are smelling! I know this an old thread but, just wanted to mention the yeasty thing. Easily treated, alot of the time. An antibacterial shampoo is a wonderful thing!! |
*cough*yeast is a fungus, not a bacteria*cough* |
and treatable by a dandruff shampoo |
erinb wrote: My Dogs feet smell like corn chips..
Is there anything I can do to change the smell. We bathe him every two weeks. the ppl who earlier said it was a yeast infection is right, and it's usually a lifelong battle for the dog so if the dogs starts showing symtoms of hair loss, itching and hives along with the smell on his feet, i would start taking it a little more serious than most here seem to. As far as the person who had a problem with the dogs gas....a very simple way to cure that is to spread the food out on pan so they cant put as much in their mouth at once... (so the dog doesnt gulp so much air) when eating out of a bowl. And it's potatoe products and sugar products to keep them away from to help control the yeast infections... not just the corn |
I don;t understand why anyone would not like the smell of fritos! |
Every time this post reappears, I have to laugh! And today I needed the laugh so thank you to whoever revised it!
A few years later and my dogs feet still smell a bit like fritos. Not as much as when they were pups...But with the snow they are smelling more like chips than before |

My frito girl. ps - this is my 450th post - thank you to everyone for all your advice and, of course, the good conversation. |
i was just visiting, but after, "I'm pregnant and had my tubes tied" and this "frito's feet" i've gotta signup. there are no close comedy clubs.
and my sheepie never smelled like that, damnit. hewould however eat all the cornchips and popcorn he could scarf. i wish my own feet smelled like fritos, it would be an improvement. u r all crazy. ok, who is smellin their dogs feet now who never did? lmao |
you dont have to be crazy to own a sheepie but it makes it more fun!!! |
We all love our Frito Feet dogs!!!!!
Welcome! |

I wonder...are we all crazy and that's why we love the OES breed OR did owning them make us crazy? Which came first |
I have the same problem with both of my dogs. Wondering does it make anyones house ( carpet ) smell, and what do I do to get rid of it? I have steamed it and will not go away. |
They were discussing this on a Golden Retriever site. I just told them it was an OES thing. |
Why would you want to get rid of it? Really, if the odor is that bad, are you sure its their feet? if its a body odor, it might be a symptom of something else. Also, the hair between the pads needs to be kept short - if you can;'t do it, the vet will for you. be careful if you do it not to clip the pad itself... |
It's official. You can truly find ANYTHING on the internet. I thought I was the only one who has always loved the smell of dog toes. Then one evening I was watching the movie "The Lake House", based on the novel by James Patterson - and in it, the character played by Sandra Bullock admits that she loves the smell of her dog's toes. I just about fell off the couch!! So glad to hear that there is an entire community of frito-toe-lovin' people out there... |

That is so funny!!!! My husband and I were talking about how our dogs feet smells like corn chips so being silly I googled it and found this!!! Corn chips aren't bad, could smell like onion or poo!! LOL |
Dogs sweat from their tongues and paws. If you see a dog outside in the heat, they look for water. Usually when they find it, they drink AND they stand in it. People think it's the funniest thing to see a dog standing in water, but they are literally trying to reduce their body temperature by 'cooling their heels' Their feet smell that way when they've been sweating. I wish our did though. I love my dog's paws and I love that "Fritoes" smell. This thread ROCKS!!! Loving the comments, but if you really want to know, that's what it is |

they smell more like dorritos |
I have a Chinese sharpie mix with bully. I did research on the breed...yeah, yeast and bacteria is bad with them. And the corn chip smell. I do not like the scent. So I gave him a blop of organic yogurt. Then I also have done a vinegar/alcohol with water foot dip. I think it would work if you did the foot dip and yogurt every day. Or at least every other day. |
When my dog, a lab has just had a bath and his coat smells pretty he still has an odor on him and when we sniff him out the source of the odor is his feet. It is so strong that it over takes the bath smell and he has been that way since a pup. |

Having hair there tends to mean moisture and then as it gets longer it will mat (who wants to walk around with mats between their toes? Ouch!) and even collect stuff (small pebbles etc) and then it will really smell. Thanks for the reminder. Know what I'll be checking this weekend. Really not a frito fan (gag, cak!) Kristine |
Whenever this thread reappears, it just cracks me up in laughter But I now have a problem....I haven't smelled the frito feet in a while on my dogs...why? HOW CAN I GET IT BACK |
silly diane, quit clipping hair between pads or buy a bag of frito's and share w/pups. |
Well, this hasn't been brought up in a while so, I thought I would Somebody mentioned a new word for it on FB so, I thought I would share POPCORN PAWS |

LOL!!!! My Bella Boo's feet smell like Kettle Korn!!! |
OMG!!! I cannot stop laughing!! I was bored and Googled this topic; I am so glad to hear I am not the only one that loves the smell of Frito Paws! As I'm sitting here my Yellow Lab is sleeping beside me, I can smell his big stinky paws and for some reason its a smell I love! Maybe because its kind of comforting, I have no idea! But I am still laughing that so many other people have actually searched and responded! Thanks for making me not feel crazy, even if the thought of loving a dog's paw smell sounds that way! |

This site has me laughing like I haven't laughed in a long time (I live a boring life). I am currently dog sitting. This may turn permanent since I have not heard from the owner for a month! He is a mostly German shepherd and maybe Great Dane and is the seventh dog I have had in my house for any length of time. I have owned 6 dogs (4 at once) and have never noticed stinky feet before. This dog has feet the size of my hands (he weighs 150 lbs) and his feet stink. He went to the doggy wash as was thoroughly washed today, including his feet and this evening his feet stink!! He was pawing at me for attention with his giant foot and I noticed it a lot. He does not chew or lick his feet very much. He seems to have stronger DO (doggy odor) too and has an oily coat that needs more baths. His skin is healthy and so is he. I am feeding him a lower grade of food than I have used before on the other dogs. His (former?) owner brought the food. The food sort of stinks. When I open the bag in the morning I have to hold my breath and the scoop is greasy. Once I am sure his owner is not returning, I will change to a higher grade food. I am thinking it is his food. People smell like the food they eat. In the US we don't notice it as much since most of us bathe often, but in other countries it is noticable - especially red meat, garlic and goat meat. Many of us have sat next to someone stinky on a plane. We are what we eat. I am thinking so is Mr. Stinky. |

Dogs sweat through their feet, some sweat more than others. I love the smell of Rufus' corn chip feet. |
dogs sweat through their feet? I had no idea! very interesting! I guess this place is the place to go to learn something new every day! |
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Corn Chip smell! and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with too much corn or grain in their diet. I have two Huskies and they both have "chipper feets" and they are fed the best food out there with absolutely no grains and corns. I love my pupper feets smell |
smelly dog.... it's a yeast infection. |
