I have shown a female in heat, and I have been in the ring many times where there was a bitch in heat. The number one rule however, as a courtesy to your fellow exhibitors and the judge, is to always let them know that your dog is in heat. |
I must have been lucky because I can't recall that I've ever had to show a bitch in season. Whether or not you do depends on a few questions you ask yourself - primarily:
1) do I feel OK with it or will it increase my stress level to the point of unbearable? (you should give the judge a quick head's up so they can take care during the examination, and also any nearbye handler's of stud muffins who may be affected). 2) will it break a major, or make it likely that my competition who may have driven six hours to get here will have no competition so no shot at any points, thus making me the most hated OES person on the face of the planet (for at least 30 minutes, some times more... 3) is my bitch OK with it or is she being flakey? Some bitches get mopey when they're in season. Since this is her first time in the ring, you want to make sure she has a good time which can be hard to do if you're mopey. Some show no change. And some become super charged and have the energy of ten bitches, will drive you there, set up for you and basically groom herself. Consider what type you have and how it may affect her. 4) - if still in doubt: what does my breeder think I should do? You can show her, it's done all the time, it's really up to you. Kristine |
Just depends on the bitch, I've done it on occassions but prefer to pull out of a show especially if they are full on in.
Mine run around the ring like they have something huge between there legs and they do. Very mopey and sluggish too. So I prefer to wait till they are out. Blueshire is right to, advise people around you while waiting to go in the ring that your bitch is in Heat, tell the judge too when he goes to go over and move your bitch, they make allowances then if they are moving like slugs. Best wishes it is up to you and how your bitch is, do keep her on the grooming table most of the time and just take her down to potty well away from the ring and the assembly area then pop her back up till your are ready to show her. And set up for the day next to other bitches, keep well away from the dogs |
Thank you all so much for the feedback. I have also talked to some members of my kennel club and they all basically said the same thing. This is only day three of her heat and so far so good. No behavior changes thus far. I am so excited to get in the ring with her I can hardly wait. First and foremost and need to do what is best for her. I am taking her to handling class tomorrow night, so this will be a good opportunity to see how she does. As of now I plan on showing unless I see some real mood changes. Wish me luck cause I know Im going to need it. |
Best wishes for her show, day 3 well by the time you show her not at the hormones from hell stage so you should be fine with her and showing. Enjoy the show and let's know how she goes. |
Very thrue. Day three should be save. But anyway keep as far as possible from dogs. Some could be interested because of the unusual smell. Try the repellent for such occasion, though I heard it doesn't work well.
Good luck!!! |

If you're showing in the NJ/PA area, give us a holler and we'll provide you with a cheering section. |
