Anyone willing to offer some more advise to this newby? I just want the best for my crazy puppy! (and I do know she is crazy-she tried to od on my pain killers-giving me a monster vet bill!) |

I would recommend spaying by 6 months of age, BEFORE her first heat. Even waiting for just one heat cycle increases her chances exponentially of having a serious, sometimes fatal uterine infection called pyometra, as well as mammary cancer, ovarian and uterine cancers etc. The sooner the better.
Welcome to the forum! |
We are getting our girl spayed tomorrow. She will be 7 months soon and is displaying signs of going into heat. I also heard that you should spay before fist heat. I did a bit of research online and there are a lot of different theories out there, but many reputable vets say spay before. Let us know what you decide! They grow up so fast!!! |
I think I am too late to get her before her first heat. I noticed when doing the mandatory morning belly rub that she is already swollen. How long before she is truely in heat? Could I get it done now? |
You can get it done while she's in heat. Vets usually charge a little more then if the dog wasn't in heat. Not sure why. But it is recommended to do it before the first heat as someone said earlier to decrease chances of possible health problems. |
Hello,
I'm a new member and would like to say hello to everyone. I am a vet tech and would like to let you know why vets charge more when a female dog is in heat. The surgery is more difficult because the uterine horns and all the veins around them are very swollen. The surgery takes longer because the vet has to suture all the enlarged veins. Most vets only charge about $20 more if she is in heat. But she will do fine either way. Also a dogs heat cycle last for about 3 weeks. First week with no bleeding, second week with bleeding and last week going out of heat with no bleeding. Hope this helps. Bye |
