Unfortunately, Barney has very severe allergies that have lead to a miserable skin infection with oozing bloody sores. I delivered him to a local animal hospital where he will get a medicated bath, antibiotics and hopefully better care for his allergies (they want to try Cyclosporin, which has been helpful in trials with dogs with severe allergies). Barney will be available for adoption once he is in a bit better shape but his condition is something that his new family will need to be diligent about managing. His smiling face and gentle nuzzling will more than make up for the effort required to care for him. If anyone is interested, please contact Colorado OES Rescue. http://www.oesrescueofcolorado.org/index.html |

I know this is an old post...but, does anyone know if Barney was adopted? The reason I ask is because at my dad's funeral on Tuesday, I spoke to Barney's former owner. I actually didn't know he owned Barney at one time until I remembered him mentioning a new OES addition around Christmas time and that he has severe allergies. One thing led to another and I finally realized it was "Barney in Colorado" that we were talking about. I told him that I was pretty sure he had gotten adopted...but that I wasn't totally sure. Anyway...he hated to have to give Barney up but said that whenever they traveled...Barney's allergies just got horrible. They have a month long trip to Argentina soon and they just felt that he needed a family who can concentrate more on getting his allergies under control. So...I was just curious as to if anyone knows Barney's whereabouts now. I hope he has a great new family!!! |
Thank you for being a foster for Colorado! I hope Barn finds a home quickly........and gets over his itchies and oooies. |
Yes, last I heard Barney was adopted by a great person. Here was the update I received in February:
Just wanted to let you know Barney went to a new home last Friday. We have been in contact with the new Mistress, and things seem to be going swimmingly. Mel, as he is now know, has immediately taken over the bed. They have been busy meeting friends and neighbors. She is quite a hiker, has climbed +/- 20 of the "fourteeners", and will take him on long hikes once he gets his strength built up. His "hot spots" are much better, injections and salve; the kennel cough is gone - think today is the final day of meds for that. |
Thanks Valerie for the update!! Sounds like he's in a great home. |
Wahoo!!! |
I am with OES Rescue of Colorado, and assisted in placing Barney. Here is an update on him: His name has been changed to Mel,or Melvin. He and his new Mistress are still on their honeymoon, and are getting to know each other. So far, he has been a perfect gentleman, and there is no reason this will change. It seems to be a match made in heaven, and I don't know which one of them is happier. She has a wide circle of friends, so he suddenly has all these pals who have fallen in love with him.
She is also very outdoorsy, so they will be spending a lot of time hiking and mountain climbing together over the summer. The best news is that his allergies turned out to be mostly mites. He was treated, and they have gone away. His hair is growing back, especially in the neck/shoulder area so rapidly she has aready had to loosen his collar to accommodate it. This is what Rescue is all about: He wandered a round about path from a shelter, to a couple of volunteers who got him out and transported him to Colorado Springs, a couple of vets and a slew of staff folks that helped him with his skin problems, to an upright who thinks he walks on water. A whole raft of people who really cared about him, and those like him, pitched in to help. They are Appreciated! |
Great update! |
Joe?? We know Colorado rescue does great work. How fortunate to have Val as a foster home. |
Welcome, Old Fart! (That's a sentence I never thought I would ever say...)
Thank you for everything you do!!! |
What a great update!!! I am so happy for Melvin and his new person! |
