dry and canned puppy food...

Hi guys,

My question is our vet told us to start mixing in dry food into wilburs meals - however it doesnt matter if we give him a handful or even 6 or 7 little individual pieces it seems to give him diarhea shortly afterwards.... I have tried a couple of different brands again the last being Iams puppy dry food... but same effect each time... am wondering if his parvo messed up his stomach or something??? Anyone other sheepie owners have similar issues?

Is it important that wilbur has dry food in his diet?

Even if we give him dry doggie treats it has the same effect??

Right now he pretty much eats Iams puppy food in a can - usually around 4 to 5 cans a day... is that normal for a 5.5 month old OES our vet didnt sound phased by the amount - thinking about though he is a big boy!

its going to depend on the food, I think. I tried alot of different ones with my puppies. One really highly rated food, with all human grade ingrediants give my guys the WORST diarrhea and gas. I even tried using them as training treats, one tiny piece at a time, and got the same effect.

I've got my girls now on a mix of Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul: Puppy and Wellness for Puppy dry, and I mix in Wellness Puppy wet. We're now fine on it, but the transition from Iams Puppy ( too much grain and corn) to this stuff was a bit rough for one of my girls. To help ease the diarrhea, I gave her a tablespoon of pureed pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) a day. It's all natural, so won't further upset thier tummies, and it works like a charm.
His been through a lot and also with all the drugs he has been on the anti-biotics etc for the Parvo do mess there system up, it also kills the good flora so hence his senstive tummy. Hopefully that will improve with time.

He does need the dry, good for his teeth too, to be able to crunch on something.

Ask the vet about a digestive enzyme powder, it helps aid digestion and also it has the good bacteria in it like yoghurt has to replace what has been killed off or messed up in his system with the treatment he has been on.

Prozyme is one brand there is a few on the market. Florazyme is another.

Start with the tin stuff then add just a bit of the kibble and the digestive enzyme then gradually keep increasing the kibble and lessen the tin stuff over at least a few months keeping an eye on his stools that they are not too runny and as you are increasing the kibble in his diet just do it very very slowly over time and he should adjust quite well.

Do get the digestive enzyme supplement just to help him while he is transitioning onto the dry food.

You can also add a little bit of boiled rice as well into his dinner with the mix, it helps to firm things up too.

Best wishes and hope all goes well with his diet. :D
good advice, whats in the pumkin that helps, just wondering?

Fiber. It is bulk in the bowels. Plus, pumpkin tastes good, so most dogs really like to eat it.
