Yet Another Dog Food Post

I found this great Pet store in my area that catiered only to dogs, and they also only carried the higher grade dog foods (from what I could tell) although they did have science diet :( Anyway I was talking to the clerk who was very knowledgeable on most of the topics I brought up to her. She even printed out several articles on bloat for me she had in the back. I mentioned the Grade your food post in the forum and she told me that that was based on some older data. I was looking for more pros and cons that people have found with different dog foods (never ending search :) ) She stated that in February there was going to be a dog food rating done in one of the publications (the name escapes me at the moment)

I was wondering if anybody has heard of any new scales or rating info that may be more accurate or up to date? Right now Chewy is on Blue Buffalo and he loves it but his stools are still a bit runny after over 3 bags lol... Anyway... there is a hundred and one post out there on food. Just wondering if there is any new information that I may have missed.

Thanks in advance guys! :D

I don't have much to add. I wanted to tell you Chewy is really cute. He is so cute in your avatar, I just had to comment.

My vet recommends Nature's Recipe brand if you are looking for grain free with no by products or fillers. If you're looking for a great wet food, Spot's Stew is excellent but pricey but they LOVE it. gobble gobble in 2 seconds  .
LOL why thank you I personally think he is the cutest thing in the world but I can safely say I did not have much to do with it!

Your pup is pretty cute as well!
The Whole Dog Journal publishes their ratings every February.

Even if the rating system is somewhat dated, I would guess that a score in the 100's would indicate a good feed choice, and scores in the 40s 50s 60s whatever would indicate the opposite.
Whole Dog Journal does dog food ratings and as I recall they are due to come out in February. Maybe that's what she's referencing.

Even if they carry not so highly rates ones, that won't taint the better ones in the same store, don't worry

WDJ sends out a little e-mail teaser before every issue and I think this last one mentioned that they are rating the grain-free ones separately this year. (No, I don't feed any of them, but it will be an interesting read).

They're also quizzing companies indepth about their sourcing of ingredients and production facility locations etc after last year's dog food scare.

Whole Dog Journal -yes that was it....I was at work and could not remember the name for anything.

LOL I know she just seems to have a lot more of the higher grade stuff I have seen in the forum and at other pet sites. A much larger selection (or it would seem to me) than both Pet Co or Petsmart. All that said she does not carry Blue but I was thinking about changing Chewy's food to something else in the near future anyway. I don't mind paying top dollar for food, but I am thinking I might be able to find something just as good or better in a little lower range, then again if I find something way better I would pay twice as much if needed lol.

He has been on Nutro LB Lamb and Rice and he did not seem to like that...moved him to chicken and he liked it a bit more but still did not seem to excited to eat it. Unfortunately He loves Pro Plan...(what my brother feeds his dogs) When ever my brother brings his dogs over Chewy will get into their bag of food and eat it like crazy. I really would like to see him go after his normal food like that.
In addition, WDJ is also focusing on the "transparency" of the companies. In other words, how open they are to divulging information about their product-- ingredients, manufacturing process, etc. Actually, here's a piece of the e-mail that they sent out:

Quote:
For this year’s review, we required each company who, in the past, had a product on our “approved dry dog food” list to divulge, for publication, information about their manufacturing sites. As a reward, we gave the participants – the ones that were still talking to us at this point! – the opportunity to make a short statement about their companies and products. You should find the statements very interesting and diverse.

I was going to say maybe listen to your dog - I think ProPlan has some higher grade stuff, for sensitive stomachs if I'm not mistaken - but then I realized that although my dogs will eat anything, they love Biljac....I HATE it. (I think it's the molasses - like candy for dogs? It's on my emergency list of "if they won't eat anything else foods", though I haven't had to resort to it yet...)

Every time I crinkle my nose and make ugly faces about it my vet quietly reminds me that Great Dane breeders love it for young dogs for its ability to promote even growth. I'm NOT recommending it. Just recalling that not all foods work for all dogs, no matter how good (or not)

Mine LOVE Canidae. And pork up on it in about 12 minutes.

Natural Balance has some really decent food. I know several people who feed that. I've also had good luck with the Eagle Holistic and Solid Gold. Wellness is good food, but varies from dog to dog for me. I have a couple whose stools end up bigger than I like. It's trial an error some times. The Blue Buffalo is wonderful but may just be too high protein for him.

I feed Canidae. I lost my last OES 4 days before the recall due to his food. It was terrible. I add canned pumpkin to the food when their stools are a bit soft. Between 1 teaspoon and a Tablespoon per dish works great for regularity. I would only do it three days a week after they are regular.
