We put her in the crate the first night and only got 4 hours of sleep. She barked the whole time. The crate is by the bed, covered, with her toys in it. We made the mistake of letting her sleep in bed with us. I broke the habit with 2 kids and 2 other dogs, so I figured I could break her too. She can go up to 4-5 hours without needing to go to the bathroom. However, if she gets off the bed, I panic... I don't want her to chew on cords. So, she NEEDS to be in the crate. Last night, she was up every 2hours! I need sleep in the worst way. I do crate her when we are not home. Easy, since I cannot hear the barking. I really need help with this. I'm exhausted and grumpy. My family needs me 100% and I'm not even close. Please.... any suggestions would help so much!!! |

First, Welcome to this forum....
We have all been through what you are going through so the advice and support is here for you. There are many, many threads on puppies, crating and sleep deprived new parents so try to read all the previous posts as this may give you some ideas. I just passed that phase with my 7 month old, Heart. She is still getting up at 4:30...but it's not so bad. At least I get uninterrupted sleep most of the time. Is you puppy getting enough exercise??? I tired puppy is a quiet puppy . She is probably teething so make sure she has "teething toys" to soothe the pain..Once you put her down for the night...DO NOT go to her. If she cries, whines..be strong...she will stop. If you respond she is training YOU... And finally...there were nights I had to use earplugs just to get a couple hours of sleep. Good luck...keep us posted.... |
Yes as much exercise as possible before bed!! I would also take the toys out of the crate at bedtime.
With my female, if I put my fingers in the crate, she would lick them and then lay down to sleep. My male was a little harder to apease but I agree with ignoring them until they quiet down. |
I would try to train her to an alarm clock. Set the clock to go off at an appropriate time for her to need to go outside when you go to bed. Could be two hours or four hours...it depends on the pup. Ignore any barking and whining. When the alarm goes off get up and take her out. Then reset the clock for the next appropriate time. Do this all night. She will eventually learn that she gets out and gets attention when the alarm goes off and not any sooner...no matter what she does.
Everyday you can push the time back by 5 - 10 minutes. As she gets older she can hold it longer. Eventually she should know what the alarm signifies and wait for it. Also...these night time breaks should be for potty only...not playing. If she gets enough exercise during the day she should be able to sleep most of the night with the appropriate potty breaks. |
The clock thing does work, I changed mine every 1 hr. We now get up at 7:30 to get the kids out of bed. Dogs go out first. 11:00 bedtime. |
I have always stuck mine out when they bark at night. I know it is hard but there are different barks, just the disgruntled one...someone please get up for me ......to the "garden" one. If it is the garden I go down let them out and put them straight back to bed. No talking no petting. It will get better...honestly... |
