Hm. Good questions. Probably even better to ask your vet. I don't know of any good research out there (there rarely is on nutraceuticals), but my totally unscientific gut feeling (i.e. what I feel comfortable doing) is I wait till my guys are 18 mos old to put them on any supplements unless recommended specifically by my vet. Why? They're done growing and that's about the time I start asking a bit more of them physically. I give Ester C and glucosamine etc etc (supplements that are supposed to be supportive of joints - Ester C is also thought to boost the immune system), but then again I do agility and stuff like that with my dogs. Frankly, you could probably start them much earlier, say a year or even six months, and that would be just fine and even a good thing. I'm probably just a little strange that way. Mind you, I still wouldn't give an 8 week old puppy Ester C except in tiny, tiny amounts as you'd probably be looking at some serious diarrhea - so why give any and risk it? That said, Ester C and the likes won't prevent hip dysplasia. Though if a dog is predisposed to CHD, it may lessen the severity of the effects (arthritis formation). I'm much more concerned about basic nutrition under 18 mos: don't overdo the protein, keep the dog lean. But not at your puppy's age. 8 weeks, is it? That's a real baby. No weight control efforts there. By four months old (this is just me - some wait till 5 or 6 months, but I wouldn't go over that for sure) I want my puppies off puppy food and on regular dog food. That is probably one of the best things you can do to protect your dog's developing joints. FWIW What made you think of it, btw? Kristine |
I would check with your vet, but I think it's safe to start at any time. (Sorry, I didn't realize that you had a puppy & I agree with MadDog, wait until he is an adult.)
Also you might want to consider in the future to add Omega 3 Fatty oil supplement from fish oils and that helps the joints as well. The best thing if your dog is pre-disposed to hip dysplasia is glucosomine chondroitan. |
There's also a product called Mega C Plus. Created by Dr. Belfield, you can google him, he's researched hip dysplasia.
Another product Flex Spur is supposed to keep calcium deposits from being created and also possibly help to eradicate ones already formed. We are using both products currently with our 7 year old recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia. |
