Hello and welcome to both the forum and the wonderful world of sheepies!!!
The amount of food that you give him will depend on the type that you feed him. Bags of food will have a chart on the back, so just follow the recommendation for his weight. That said, remember to weigh him frequently (I used to pup into the vet every week and just stick him on the scale) to make sure that you are feeding him the proper amount. This will change every few weeks at least since he will grow quite quickly, especially at first. As for the brand, I am quite picky and like to feed Tucker the most natural kind I can get. I had him on the brand "Foundations" and then upped him to "GO!" a few months ago, however I believe these are Canadian brands so it may be hard to find. I would HIGHLY discourage you from feeding him a "chow", as this is sort of like the pizza of dog food, and you will notice that he needs to eat a lot more of it since it has so many empty calories. Personally, I would choose a brand that you are comfortable with. I spoke a lot to the pet store owners to see what they recommended, and they were excellent about explaining the different brands to me. Also, don't be afraid to talk to some different stores. One store I went to was partly sponsored by one brand so they kept pushing it on me without explaining why it was good or what other options are. I like to be able to read the back of the bag and recognize what the ingredients are, too, so I know he isn't getting a bunch of crap and leftover type ingredients. As for the yellowness, as far as I have heard that is a consistent problem. I did notice, however, that it definitely reduced when he was on a better food (the kind he was on at first had dye in it which is why his mouth was orange - he also had orange tear stains which disappeared with the holisitic food). There are many products which help to clean it and keep it white - search on the forum and I think there are some threads. Good luck with everything!! What is the puppy's name??? Do you have any pictures??? We'd love to see them!! |
Acana is a good one but also in Canada, there business has tripled since the dog food scare. Thet have large breed puppy, large breed adult, lamb and rice, Salomon and potato..etc everything. No wheat or junk. |
I use Canidae. I started feeding 1/2 to 1 cup at a time 3-4 times a day with some warm water when he was that little. You can talk to your local feed store about ordering it for you. Since the pet food poisoning/melamine from China my local feed store carries it all the time. It is a hollistic food. I lost my last OES to that poison episode, so I am extremely careful now. I also don't feed any canned food. I know the vet has yours on something now...but I would try to stay away in future if you can. |
