puppy partial prolapse

My wife and I just got a puppy from a good breeder on Saturday. Took her to the vet yesterday for a checkup yesterday and everything looked great. We woke up this morning and she had a little red bump on bum. My wife grew up on a farm so we knew what it was.

Took the puppy back to the vet and we were correct. the vet stitched it to fix, but it didn't work. He is going to keep her overnight and evaluate to see if it makes sense to try again in the morning or if a better option to to amputate the extra tissue.

Has anyone done this before or know much about it? How effective is the surgery to amputate? What kind of recovery is involved?

Just looking for some advice from someone who is familiar with the process. Thanks for the help.

I read this but I have no idea what was being said. What is the issue here?

It sounds like a rectal prolapse.

I'm so sorry. I don't have any experience with this but I hope the treatment goes well. Have you been in touch with the breeder? If it is a rectal prolapse, I think a foster kitty of Marianne's went through the surgery. The kitty's name is Petunia. You can view some of the posts here-

You might PM Marianne to see how the surgery went along with recovery time.

Best wishes~
correct on the rectal prolapse. Thanks for the links. I have done lots of internet searches to find more about recover and found both of those. Most say the same thing. I am hoping to get someone who has had personal experience.

I checked with the breeder to find out some more history and this was a surprise to her. Unless she was a pretty good faker (I don't think she is), she had never heard of a prolapse before.

Oops... I had changed my post. Please see above about Marianne and her kitty Petunia.
Does the vet have your pup on a stool softener to help things pass easier?
Hi,

Just answered your post on another thread, What does it mean?" and then saw you asked the question here as well. Think it's meant to be as we can share some of our experiences.

Here's the response I gave on the other post:
http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=17865

I had neglected to write that one vet told me that a prolasped anus can be caused by worms as well. In order to make sure this wasn't the case with Petunia, she was dewormed again before the surgery. Something to think about regarding puppies and kittens.

I still plan on trying again with Petunia, but as she was recovering from her infection, I wanted to make sure she was 100%. I also will use my regular vet to do the surgery this time.

PS Thanks 6 Girls mom for finding my previous post. How ironic regarding I was a tad concerned about posting about medical issues for a kitten on the OES forum but felt it may be important for someone that may go through similar issues with their dog.

Thinking good thoughts that your pup is ok.
A partial prolapse occurs from the puppy straining due to worms which is usually the first reason why. You must get a stool exam to determine if so. Sometimes worms are undetectable you need a good stool sample to check it. If this does occur because of worms and you dont have money to take them to the vet, you should normaly deworm your dogs anyway at 4weeks and every 2wks in 4 sets. ( for example if you start at 4weeks you do it at 6wks then 8, then 10) YOU MUST TREAT THEM FOR ALL WORMS! that is the hard thing finding a good all in one dewormer. Drontal is the best and panacur but are prescription strengh.

But once you deworm, and also treating that red bump you must not feed them no more and lube it up and try to push it back in. If you dont keep it moist and treat it, it can become a full prolapse which has to be surgicaly put back in UNLESS you can lube it up and push it back in. NOW if you do that you must suture up the hole because it will come right back out! Its the rim of the butt hole that makes it more of a smaller hole and helps the rectum tube stay inside

TREATING THE PARTIAL PROLAPSE ---
1. Keep lubed dont let it dry!
2. Apply Sugar on it right away this helps drain out any fluids. You have to constantly do this every couple hrs..
3. Give your dog a finger full of vegitable shortning or vasiline this is useful for hair balls but also lubricates the insides so if there straining and its a hard stool it can come out
NOW IF THERE IS DIAREA GIVE THEM SOME SOFT RICE THIS WILL HELP THE STOOL GAIN FORMITY...

AND LAST WITH WARM WATER SOAK THE SWOLLEN RECTAL FOR 15 MINUTES EVERY 2HRS FOR 2 DAYS THIS WILL DRASTICALLY DECREASE THE SIZE OF THE GROWTH...

I LEARNED THIS BY SEVERAL VETS BECAUSE THIS HAPPENED TO ME ON MY LITTERS THIS CONDITION IF PERSITANT CAN BE HEREDITARY...

HOPE THIS HELPS BECAUSE I SURE NEEDED IT WHEN I DIDNT KNOW
