After I realized what we did we felt terrible - but we didn't mean too. It's just... they are so beautiful and large... I couldn't help but stare at the dog I wanted. Oh - I hope it wasn't anyone on this forum! If it is - sorry! |

Don't feel bad, people stare at me & Frank all of the time, especially when he's being chased by the cat or is trying to get me to chase him with a big ole soccer ball in his mouth. Not only do they stare, they actually stop their car in the middle of the street for several minutes and usually are laughing hysterically or sometimes they pull their car over and actually get out to meet him. And the kids in town don't even know my name but they certainly call out to Frank every chance they get. They are quite a sight to see, especially doing their bunny romp in full coat, so I'm sure those folks that you saw in SC are used to it as well. |
I have sheepie friends who will stop whenever they see a sheepie and go up and start talking with the owner. Fortunately the man wears a cap with a big sheepdog on it so the dog owners are less nervous when strangers approach. You might want to find some neutral way to introduce yourself. |
I love getting that reaction out of people! It's so funny! I was so proud the one day while walking Dancer to the school to pick the kids up, someone was walking an airdale terrier on the other side of the street and called over "That is an absolutely beautiful dog!" and stopped and watched us for a while. The airdale was gorgeous too, I think it was a show dog, it looked like it had that walk, and had been groomed for show, so I returned the compliment...lol... |
Integra Hellsing,
Where are you in SC? Just curious, i'm in Charleston, Sc |
We always stop to look at other OES's we see when we cruise around town, no matter where they are... But we have to be careful so their owners don't freak out. Also, we are always going to the mall pet store just in case there's a puppy.
When we let them loose at home people always stops by or slows down when I'm running with them, and they always get praised by how cute they are... I'm a proud dad! Eventually, someone will make the comment that they used to have a dog exactly like them, but it was smaller, or with curly hair, or it was brown and gray... Funny! |

I had a guy approach us the other day on our walk and he started out by saying 'I've been watching you all summer'...pretty creepy! I had my 9 year old step daughter with me and she was a bit freaked. I must have given him the look because he started fumbling and explaining how much he loved Sheepies! I had a good laugh about it in the end. |
Poor guy!! He must've seeen your face and thought "oh great, now those nice people think I'm some kinda stalker!!" When he was just admiring your beatuiful sheepie!! I always admire the beautiful collies and shelties I see in the neighborhoods... I've never seen any sheepies out for walks though... Ah well.

About one month before we got Chelsea I WAS HOT for a Sheepie, I was out Christmas shopping, in the car and on the cell phone with my husband when suddenly at an intersection a couple crossed with a beautiful Golden and a massive OES male in full coat, I screamed "oh my God!"- "Oh my!" " Oh Doug!" (my husband) He was like "what?!!" "are you okay??" "have you had an accident??!" - When I told him I had merely seen a sheepie I thought he was going to lose it. He thought for sure I was reacting that way because something horrible had happened, that big old boy turned and looked right at me from the curb, I melted and the rest is history.
Up. |
I was driving out of the neighborhood where i was dog sitting a few weeks ago and all of a sudden i see a lady walking a gorgeous sheepie... so what do i do? slam on my breaks, manually roll down the window on the passenger side (shes looking at me like 'who the hell are you??' at this point) and start talking sheepies with her. fortunately all us sheepie onwers are crazy so she didnt find it weird at all! |
When we were looking for a breeder in our area, I spotted a sheepdog while I was at work and had to stop the man walking it.
He was so confused when I stopped him it took a good five minutes of explaining to get across what information I wanted. It doesn't really help that I work on the ambulance and was in uniform pulling the stretcher down the hall of a nursing home when I accost this guy about his dog. He thought there was something wrong with his relative that was a resident at the home and that's what I was questioning him about. Luckily our call was a false alarm and I could wait while that guy found all of his breeder info! |
If we see someone with another sheepdog, we get totally nuts talking about our 2 puppers. Then we mention the forum and that they should check it out. We have also had people turn their vehicles around and stop in the middle of our neighborhood just to ask about Jack and Annabelle. Most of them thought Jack was Mommy to Annie....LOL!
My parents are probably about ready to commit me, I talk about my "friends" with sheepies. They are like "Wow, we had no idea there were so many people with sheepdogs in Oklahoma." And I am like "no, they live other places, we talk on a forum for sheepies." I am sure they think I am just a little nuts. LOL Stormi and co. |
I think we all have a healthy obsession with our OES
I think it's fun when people stop me. There are a lot of dogs in our area, but I think we've only seen 1 other OES in the area. I always get "what kind of dog is that". We had a kick on Halloween, all the kids were oohing and ahhing when Lola greeted them (though I think she scared a couple of the little ones). One girl wanted to take her home (we almost let her ) And I've had mom's in their minivans slow down to show their kids the dog when we're on a walk. I don't mind, I love talking about my dog |
Me too! LOL I had a garbage truck stop and the guys got out and were amazed at Mopsey! They were asking what kind of dog is it, where did you get it, how much it was...It was so funny! A woman chased me down the block to tell me that she has been watching me walk Mopsey for months and that she just couldn't resist anymore and had to say hi! LOL Another time, a couple whose house we were passing came out and wanted to know the name of the breed and all sorts of other question. Oh, and lets not forget the Halloween adventures! The first batch of kids came and saw her, as they left I hear them yell down the block "Hey go over there! They have a great big dog!" LOL I ran out of candy in 30 min! Steve was like "Where are they all coming from?" Ha ha ha I love the fact that others love her! And she really enjoys the attention! He he he |
Hahah Stormi! I know what you mean about the forum. I tell my folks about "this friend I met on the sheepie forum" or "there's this dog on the sheepie forum that did such and such" and they look at me like I've completley lost my mind! My husband just laughs at me The only time I saw a sheepie in person I was too shy to go over and say hi... But I wish I had!
