http://geari.blogspot.com/2006/04/in-sc ... el-as.html Although I think the weights may have been exaggerated, is this something we now have to worry about for animal rights as well? Interestinglly enough though in the rant the writer states that it has been illegal in Scotland to use dogs to pull carts since 1912. Are we that far behind the curve - or is this all mad eup? |

Actually, although the intent of the law seemed to be to eliminate pulling, the law says dogs can't pull on on roads, not that it is illegal altogether: Quote: Organised by the American-based United Pulling Federation the event could only go ahead because it was staged indoors, as it is illegal to make dogs pull loads on a public highway under the 1912 Protection of Animals Act.
I don't have a dog in this fight, so to speak. I think managed properly it's a great sport. As with all animal sports, there is a risk of abuse among over-enthused and less-than-noble owners. |

Thank you - I didn't realize I missed typing "on the road" in my post. I do tend to be a messy typist. |
Very interesting. This is a sport Chewie does, and he really, really loves it. He does lots, so it's not like he has to do this to have a life!
I get his harness out and he just wiggles with excitement. Anyone who has met him knows that Chewie is a really low key dog. It takes a lot to get him excited. He gets all excited when his friend Gabby pulls too - He knows they both do it, and if Gabby is pulling, he will get to also. At competitions here, I was really impressed. Everything is very positive oriented and dog friendly. The dogs pulling do it because they want to. It is impossible to have a dog do this against their will. There are no leashes, bribes or treats involved. You just hook them up and they either pull or they don't. That's it. |
