A rose by any other name...

I've been thinking about the whole name thing a lot lately. I know a lot of people who acquire dogs as adults change their name and it's really no big deal. I know others who hate the thought. I honestly don't think it matters, but here's why I've been thinking about it:

I took back one of my puppies when he was just over a year old, after months of counseling his owners (husband and wife couldn't agree: wife felt dog should not eat drywall and dig up her new garden, husband felt wife was supressing dog's right to be a dog. I tried to remain neutral, but I admit I had to side with the wife on most issues in this case). I eventually conceded we were dealing with irreconcilable differences here and asked that they return the dog to me rather than risk having him named in a divorce suit (reason for filing: Che)

What's a Che you ask? A Che is what happens when someone who does not understand the full implications of how important naming a dog is. Now, I have a Sybil, sister of Che, in fact. But I knew full well the risk I was taking when naming her after someone whose psychological issues were so complex they inspired not only a syndrome, but a movie, and I'm willing to accept the consequences. However, I warned his less experienced owners that naming a sheepdog puppy after a south american revolutionary/guerilla leader, quite possibly not a good thing to do.

When I got him back, I fully intended to change his name, but nothing fit. Then I figured I'd get him back on the straight and narrow as to his understanding of what walls are and are not for and that kind of thing - dividing rooms, yes; snacking on, no - place him, and let his new family pick. But in the process I discovered he was extraordinarily high drive and athletic and thus a good agility prospect, so I decided he had come home to stay. But the name issue remained unresolved.

No one gets his name right. I've lost track of the varieties: Chay, Chez, Chi ...you name it. Anything but Che. And I now have visions of when I start trialing him and agility gate stewards all over the midwest cursing my name (or his... ) So I'm debating if I should keep his name (actually I AM keeping his name), but come up with an ALTERNATE call name that gate stewards can handle so they don't have to stand there and yell out: "Fluffy on the line, Muffy on deck, and that-grey-and-white-shaggy-thing-with the funny name in the hole..."

Thoughts? Suggestions?

How about just giving them the name Shay. A little too sssshhhh, but I think most could get that right. Thought about Chez, but that would come out "cheese." Chaise lounge?

Oche......(number eight)
Did someone seriously name an Old English Sheepdog after Che Guevara or did the inspiration come from somewhere else?

How do you pronounce it?
How about Guvvy? (Short for Guevera)

I've always pronounced the name either Chay or Kay, depending on my mood 8)

Maybe you could provide a phonetic way of spelling it when you submit him someplace. Like write Che (pronounced Kay) so they'll know...

Yes, they most seriously did. I just shook my head when she told me. What can you do?

I'm not sure what the inspiration was. I'm not so sure I wanted to know  - but since you ask...I'll ask her and report back.

I pronounce it " Cheh" - sort of like the first part of Che-rry.

I'm not sure I can rename him after lawn furniture, even if on paper only, though I do like the sound of it.

Kristine
I've always heard it pronounced as "Chay" but the "Kay" makes sense. I'm just not that multicultural and rich with language to have thought that, lol.

That really is odd since OES are neither Cuban or Marxists. Maybe the guerrilla part appealed to them?
how about river?

First of all, I think you're stereotyping sheepdogs here, by claiming that you know they aren't Marxist. How do you know the political leanings of each individual dog?

You may be on to something, because when I first got him back he used to tinkle when he got excited...

Or should that be Creek....?

I refuse to call him "Tinkle". Don't anyone even go there!

True, but since he's in America, Marxism probably isn't a view we want to encourage anyway. If he's hanging out with Sybil, they may already be plotting to become guerrillas.

I was going to vehemently deny any Marxist tendencies on the part of any of my dogs and declare them for what they are: common thugs who do not particularly believe in sharing; wealth, chew toys, me....although they are at least pacifistic and limit themselve to the occascional dirty look and pushing each other out of the way.

Yet, in thinking about it, one has to wonder if perhaps the fact that one of their sisters went to a rather well-to-do family and - truly - lives in the lap of luxury, whilst they're stuck with, well, me, may have lit a bit of a fire under their thuggish behinds and they are perhaps plotting to stage a coup as we speak.

If anyone spots the two of them making a beeline from WI to NJ, please contact me immediately so I can warn Suzy's family to draw the bridge up over the moat.

OK - I have an answer as to why Che?

I'm told he named himself. 8O

Actually, Che was her second choice, because she felt naming him Osama was "too politically incorrect and potentially upsetting to people at this point in time...."

Oh, yeah - proud, proud breeder. So glad I asked

Kristine
How about Turner.. as in Returner...

just kidding..

I'm really concerned about what was transpiring in this young dog's life that he was prompted to name himself Che.
:D The truth is that all OES are really hippies at heart! I have added a picture to my gallery: an old sticker, partly damaged. I have a whole one on my dresser mirror but it's stuck tight!

Actually, I think the bigger question would be: how did he know the significance of the name?

Did I leave the history channel on and leave the room when he and his siblings were younger? Does he have a library card none of us know about? Does he speak Spanish? (Quite possible, he was raised in a bi-lingual household).

I could have an animal communicator ask him these questions, but I'm not convinced I want to know...

Sybil adores him. Worships the ground he leaps on. Grooms him. Snuggles with him.

The more I think about that level of devotion - hero worship, really - and the two of them, as their vet once observed, attached at the hip, the more I think this is perhaps not such a good thing... :lmt:

Actually - not a bad idea! And then I can rename Sybil "Hooch"

Part of his formal name is Moonlight Madness....(me and my bright naming ideas  )

I think he was destined to be returned, quite frankly. I'm glad he was.

I guess it's too late to re-register her as Moonshine Madness...

Kristine
You guys are hilarious.

I'm wondering if he's related to Hannah. She too loved drywall and plants! Only it was reversed in our house. Hubby did not condone this behavior.

How about Chase? In the circumstances a name change sounds paramount.

OK, Kristine, "Madness" maybe you started this whole thing?

OK, please tell me you're waiting for it to be approved. I was so proud of myself for even remembering how to access people's galleries, but I don't THINK I see anything hippie-like!!

Ah, but the pretty flowers sure did make me long for spring...

And I forgot to add. If I had to bet money I'd say "Sybil" is really your favorite! :P
Give him a tough name if he is going into the agility ring, something to have the others worried about when they call you both to the ring. 8)

"Chainsaw" -   "Razor"   "Chopper" :x

Get rid of the Che, heck is it shortened version of Sonnys other half Cher? 8O

If you send me her pedigree, I can tell you. But they may just be related in spirit. Yes, snacked on plants were also high on his consumption/his former owner's complaint list...

He IS related to Clyde, a fact I notice Jill only owns up to when the GOOD puppy (that would be Dawn's Chewie) is being discussed

How about Chase? In the circumstances a name change sounds paramount.

I considered Chase. It actually fit. But there is another performance OES with that name, and since there are only, you know, about 23 of them in the entire country at any given time, it seems like we should try to avoid naming confusing. I do love the name, though.

OK, Kristine, "Madness" maybe you started this whole thing?[/quote]

Oh, absolutely guilty as charged. Any one who breeds a bitch named Mad Dog is just asking for it!

I would only let one of the sibs, the infamous lady of luxury, Suzie, go to a couple back East whom I didn't know personally if it was under the supervision of an OES agility friend of mine. She's been training her for them. I get bi-weekly Suzie damage reports... But the worst was this week when my friend informed me that she and Suze had had a directional disagreement in agility class that resulted in her - that would be the friend, not Suzie - breaking her elbow... 8O (yes, we're still friends - I asked... )

I suggested I we rename her Demolition Suzie, but, again, the demolition part has already been taken by a very famous (well, in certain circles at any rate  ) agility OES who once resulted in his owner/handler/breeder needing knee surgery....

Part of The Demolition Dog's registered name makes reference to the Devil. Name your pups with care

You want me to come up with a TOUGHER name???? His terroristic ambitions aren't bad ENOUGH????

Love from all at Tikki-ti-boo :hearts:

That is probably the most SENSIBLE suggestion to date

How about:

Challenger

CheCheCheChase and call him Chase for short?
Or

Champion
Or just cut to the chase and call him

:hearts: :hearts: ANGEL

That should fix the problem :D
Man, I go into town and all this craziness starts. :D
I have heard about/been around Che practically since his birth, and I still have to think before I say his name. Never having heard of his namesake, I really had trouble with it! I kept saying Chee. I always thought it would be fun to have a Chee and Chew. 8)

I agree, it is a bad name - mostly from how difficult it is to say and project it. Not a good performance dog name! Then add all the extra meanings... poor boy. :?

Sorry to hear that Suzy is now breaking arms.... 8O
lisaoes wrote:
Sybill (What other names does she use? When her multiple personalities overtake  )

Would you believe her nicknames so far are Syb, Lee-lee and Sybellini????

She's actually a very sweet snuggle bunny who just has this problem if her mind (s?>) isn't <aren't?> occupied

Her agility instructor is half afraid to take a moment out to explain anything to us because if she is not working constantly, she buzzes off to steal things off the tables, rearrange the chute, give the garbage can a quick sniff-over for edibles, go into every empty crate in the building etc etc etc . When she's working, she's on, right there and awesome. But there is no such thing as down time. I have truthfully never known an OES who is this busy!

When she was five weeks old my vet and some other friends were visiting and we were all hoovering around the whelping box and the other seven were being so sweet and kind of boring and as soon as Sybil's feet hit the ground she was three rooms away. Vet immediately said: place her! A family with a dozen kids might keep her occupied...

I repeated what I said when she was three minutes old: she's MINE.

One of Belle's co-owners named her that day when I told her her registered named was to be M's Must Be Madness (which is what I've been told time and time again by everyone near and dear to me that keeping her would be   )

I've never regretted it. During a year from hell, when even my rock, my Belle, had a hard time keeping me going, Sybil was there to make me laugh and had enough energy for both of them.

Heiress to the throne. That's her real designation.
