Sorry, naive question, but what are loops? Secondly, what is your concern, really? We left Tucker with my sister when he was only 3 months old. She was more than happy to look after him and knew full well what looking after such a young puppy would entail, but it went really well. As long as you have a puppy-sitter whom you really trust and feel comfortable with, in my opinion there is nothing to worry about. We sent him along with a "Tucker's House Rules" fact sheet with all of the commands that he knew already, ones we were working on, as well as our house rules (eg. no sleeping on the bed) and asked that my sister remain consistent with them. When we picked him up 10 days later, he was the same puppy and ecstatic to see us! |
When Foz was 4 months we needed to go away for the weekend for my SIL's wedding. We had a dog sitter come to the house to take care of him and Annie. This particular dog sitter really sat at the house the entire weekend Fozzie was fine. |
Hi. I also have a 5 month old OES puppy, and my husband and I just got back from a week long vacation.
We checked around for boarding, and ended up going with Petsmart's Pet Hotel. They had nice accomodations, 24hr supervision, and the dogs were taken on several walks per day. We purchased the "all day play" for an additional charge, which meant she got to play with the other dogs (supervised) for most of the day in a play room. They had snack kongs available for purchase too. (We did 1 per day). She had a blast! The trainers there said she loved play time and even made a best friend with a dog named Dixie. Plus, the day we picked her up we scheduled a bath, so she came out smelling great and looking pretty. We didn't have to worry about her at all while we were gone. We missed her, but we knew she was having fun. Plus, they'll let you call up there and talk to your dog while you're gone if you want. (They put it on speaker so the dog can hear your voice). I'm sure your puppy will be just fine if you make sure she has plenty of fun things to do and gets good care while you're gone. |
We left Barney for 2 weeks to get married when he was about 7 months old and he was fine. |
I guessing loops is estrus....what we often call "heat." I'd wait until estrus is complete and time for puppies has passed.
We didn't know Sonja has been bred by our 4 month old St. Bernard. We thought he was too young to breed. Ha! We had my mother and brother dog sit for us. My mother dislikes dogs. Sonja delivered 5 pups while we were away. Mom was.....unhappy. |
I'm guessing Heat or in Season too with loops, never heard it called that before.
Agree with Sheepieboss, wait till she has her first season and it is over as it is a huge responsibility to either a boarding facility or house sitter to have to deal with as well as looking after all the dogs while you are away. Happened to me 3 weeks vacation and my young bitch had her first heat while we were away. Only good thing was the friend that was looking after her at her home has OES and intact bitches too. So she was in safe hands with someone experienced with a bitch in heat. If you are keeping her entire, then I would maybe wait till after, then you know you can have a great vacation without worrying that she might come in while your away. Welcome to the forum too |
Ooops sorry about the foreign term, the local vets call it loops for being in heat. We had always thought it was the correct english term. Anyways, our main concern is the disciplinary part, whether she would forget all the house rules when we are away. The check-list is a good idea, will get that done for sure. And the fact that we have 2 boys in the house, maybe it's best we wait until she has gotten her first heat. My husband believes it's all to do with separation anxiety on my part. Unlike the boys, she follows me everywhere around the house, even sits outside the bathroom waiting for us each time we are in. Is this too much? Should I train her to be less "sticky" with us so she doesn't get too lonely when we are gone? |
