This is Paul Dean's basic bread pudding. I got this off http://www.foodtv.com Bread pudding isn't that hard. Alcohol varies with chef, go alcohol free, or make a fruit sauce.
2 cups granulated sugar 5 large beaten eggs 2 cups milk 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 3 cups cubed Italian bread, allow to stale overnight in a bowl 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened 1 cup chopped pecans For the sauce: 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted 1 egg, beaten 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/4 cup brandy Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan. Mix together granulated sugar, eggs, and milk in a bowl; add vanilla. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for 10 minutes. In another bowl, mix and crumble together brown sugar, butter, and pecans. Pour bread mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over the top and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until set. Remove from oven. For the sauce: Mix together the granulated sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir together until the sugar is melted. Add the brandy, stirring well. Pour over bread pudding. Serve warm or cold. |
In the UK there is a difference ....for bread pudding I soak stale bread in water overnight, next day squeeze out excess water and mix in some raisins, dried fruit and some suet, or grated veg fat, and sugar to taste. Place in a greased flat dish, sprinkle top with brown sugar, cover with foil, when nearly cooked remove foil for last few minutes or place pudding under grill. Lovely with custard, or as good cold.
Bread and butter pudding.....spread 6 slices of stale bread with marge and cut off crusts, cut bread into triangles or "soldiers" place in greased pie dish layer by layer in-between each layer place raisins and if you have any sliced cooking apples. Finish off with layer off bread butter side up. Mix together half a cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar and an egg. Carefully pour over pudding. Press pudding down with back of spoon to make sure all bread is saturated. Sprinkle top with nutmeg. bake in oven. |
This is my mom's recipe - it is yummy!
Bread pudding 2 cups bread crumbs - dry 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 pint cream or milk 3 or 4 eggs, beaten 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp vanilla 4 Tbsp butter dash of salt Soak the bread crumbs in cream. Add sugar, butter, beaten eggs, salt and flavoring. Place in a buttered baking dish. Can top with chopped raisins or dates. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes. |
WOW great ones. I will try them. The first one from Paula Dean sonds good have you made it? |
Don't have a recipe, but wanted to say I LOVE bread pudding. Once in a blue moon the cafeteria at work will have Ora's homemade bread pudding and it sells out in 15 minutes.
Bread pudding, yum. |
Paula also has a recipe for bread pudding that starts with a dozen (or so) Krispie Kreme doughnuts. I can't eat it, but it sure sounds divine. |
Tammy, I've seen that recipe and figured out that ONE serving has over 1,000 calories. And Lord knows how many grams of fat. But I bet it's good! |
I know what you mean, Paula. It sure sounds & looks delicious, but it's definitely off limits for me. |

My niece made this for Christmas dinner. I did not try any because as soon as I found out about the donuts, I knew way to many calories for me. Everyone else loved it and it was gone in no time. |
ive seen that recipe and her making it on one of her show....dang, it looked good AND fattening.....lol
someone make it for me? i hate baking...even with pre-cooked stuff....lol |
