Ear Mites - Scabies

Oh where to begin.. Thanks to all for saying they hoped Paul and I would get another sheepie when Tino passed over the Rainbow Bridge in November....we just have, he is a lovely bonnie boy called Ben. He is 6 months old next week, and we have had him for 2 days.
Sadly he was aneathetised on his second day with us, the ends of his ears were badly matted and painful and itchy. The vets have sheared the heiar off them and unfortunaltely they are all crusty and sore, he has had ear mites and thus reuslted in scabies, the one wihich can be passed to people. I have excema and have been adivsed by the vet to wear cotton gloves around the house and when with Ben. Paul has good skin so should be okay.

Poor Ben, he is a real character, my question is to ask for any advice or tips, just incase anyone has come across the same prolem or experienced this, he has had some injections to help with the itching, and more deflea solution, and is presently on tablets. Mags has been de-flead again and hope it doesnt pass on to her.

I am boil washing his bedding at 90 degrees inthe washing machine and found somewhere on the internet that said at a tablespoon of bleach in with the wash?? Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks
Helen
He was due to start Training classes on Tuesday - Dont think they will allow him to go now.

Sorry, no suggestions for you. But I wanted to congratulate you on getting Ben. I hope he's feeling better soon.
Is that something that can be cured, or will he always have it? Never heard of that one for dogs.
vet say's it's curable & we've no reason to doubt,BEN'S been a lot better since his visit to the vets, the poor lad was'nt too happy before, constantly scratching,he was very restless........
still, what ever he need's to get him well again he will get :)
I have a 3 yr old girl, new to me, but not a rescue...just a relocation. She has very dry skin and we are working on that one. Changed her food to a non-allergic type and waiting for a melaleuca oil spray.

It's tough when they are uncomfortable. Sounds like Ben is a lovely boy. I am sure he will be happy with you.
Scabies takes a while to get rid but it can with your persistence. We had a case of Cheyletiellosis (Walking Dandruff Mite) here in our house and we treated all the animals with a few courses of Revolution, which is a topical treatment. We still use it as a preventative on our terrier as they are more susceptible to picking it up. If the injections don't end up getting rid of it you may want to ask your vet if you can try Revolution as a secondary option. I completely sympathize for you....
Verve up...how do you know if they have that? I see Bella has flakes on her back, and I was sure it was dry skin...but you make me wonder. She still seems to be itchy, and I am sure it isn't allergies. I am feeding Canidae now because it has no allergens.
Cheyletiellosis is not that common, so you might want to try some Cod Liver Oil or some other supplement high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids to see if that clears up the drandruff. (Flax seed oil doesn't do the same job as the fish oils). Our first OES had some flaking and Rebecca did too until we started giving her supplements every day.

The walking dandruff mite is pretty easy to diagnose. Take a flea comb or something else you can kind of scrape the skin with to get some flakes. Put them on a dark piece of paper or fabric. If you look really hard they will move, but it is helpful if you have a magnifying glass. Our vet ended up making the diagnosis. Our terrier was around a lot of other terriers and we think he picked up there.

Cheyletiellosis is easier to get rid of than Scabies, as they live on the surface of the skin and Scabies live underneath.
Helen, Congratulations on getting another dog. To be able to open your heart again after a loss is a wonderful thing. Can't wait to see his photos as he grows up. :D :D :D
