Also, is there an online grooming supply that is better than another? I used to use RC Steele but they seem to have been bought out and the tools I am looking for are gone. Thank you for the advice! |

I trim the hairs between the pads with a small pair of round-ended scissors. It takes a bit of practice, I think my dog has tickly feet so it's best done in the evening when he is too tired to fight back
I think some people shave but I wouldn't know how to do that. I trim them about once every 2 weeks. Hope that helps! |
I gave up on using scissors and bought a small Oster finishing razor. Gets in between the pads, has never nicked the skin, and does the job quickly-- which is nice since one of my dogs gets squirmy when you mess with his feet.
I wish someone would rate online pet supply vendors. I've had good experiences over the years with VedMed Direct (especially with low cost prescription supplies like thyroid supplements and metacam), and JB Wholesale Pet Supplies. |
Either way will work but definitely do something.
If you scissor, you will have to do it more often. If you shave, you will find it easier to use a smaller clipper. Think of the ones that men use to do trimming of sideburns and the like. You'll probably notice a difference right away. Also, keep the nails trimmed. Anything that keeps the pads from making firm contact with the ground will make it more slippery. |
I prefer to use the clippers....on Heart, her hair is so thick a scissors gets stuck...I do use a scissors on Pearl since she is patient and lays there quietly.. |
I use whatever tool I have closest to me, which is usually the scissors but I find that using small clippers really is easier and faster. It really all depends on how long you've gone between groomings, too. Sometimes I chop the big hunks with scissors and do the finishing with clippers.
There's a lot of stuff you can put on paw pads. There's a wax called Show Off that helps with grip and there's other paw waxes (of different names that I can't recall right now!) that I've used with varying success. I used it a lot when we first got laminate floors but I found the dogs adjusted well and didn't need it long, especially the young dogs. Once in awhile, I still put it on my old girl when she's having a bad day getting up but usually she does fine without it, too. |
