Alice, my 2 year old OES, and I are going to be moving from snowy Massachusetts to Los Angeles this summer. I have kept her coat long and full since she was a puppy but I'm wondering if she's going to overheat in the warmer LA weather. I'm curious what you warm climate parents do? -nick |

Hi Nick! I live in Alabama and of course it gets very hot here during the summer months. My OES has always been an outside dog, even though I have tried to convert him to an inside dog. He loves it outside though!! Anyway, I usually have Sam shaved 3-4 times during the spring/summer months. By the time it cools off a little, his hair will have grown back enough to keep him warm during the winter.
Hope this helps!! jen |
I live in Arizona - and Meriln actually preferred staying outdoors most of the time....no matter how much I tried to convince him to come in - thinking he was terribly hot. The vet told me that their long hair actually insulates them from the heat -as well as the cold - although I did usually shave him at least once a year - just for grooming purposes |
Hi, we live in Colorado and the humidity here is not high and we are closer to the sun.. We clipped our sheepdog every summer. They can get hot spots which is no fun for you or the dog. He has a personality change each time... he acted kind of shy... then he was fine. The hair always grows back before winter. I think he actually loved getting all that fur off... our vet suggested the shaving to us... |
Hi,
We live in Florida and have managed to keep Bam-Bam in full coat from day one. He loves the outdoors. He comes and goes from the house to the outdoors as he pleases. I sometimes actually find him lying in the direct sun in the hottest part of the day. We do bath him monthly and keep the coat thinned out a bit in the summer, but he seems to do just fine with a full coat. Good Luck in L A, Sharon |
