when can a puppy start with a gentle leader?

Hi all,

How early on can one begin using the gentle leader leash system?

Thanks very much,

Lee

Hi Lee,

It depends on your puppy. Is he/she not good on the leash? Does he/she pull you? How does your puppy behaves on the leash? Why do you want to use the gentle leader? Do you mean gentle leader or the Halti? There is a huge difference between the two.

Kata, what is the huge difference? I have used both and the only visible difference to be is slightly in the construction but they both fasten in the same place and the metal clip where you attach the leash is identical as well. The slide where the correction takes place is the same on mine as well. I find them both to have worked similarly. Are we talking about the same thing or are you talking about the harness? What do you see as the big difference? (Just curious, I don't use either of them anymore anyway. It's a plain old collar or sometimes a show lead for us!)
Jill, the HUGE difference between the Gentle Leader and the Halti is that the Gentle Leader is tight on your dog's muzzle while the Halti is loose. The reason I personally prefer the Halti is because it's loose, which means when the dog is not pulling he is not being corrected by tightening it on his muzzle.

The Gentle Leader is always tight on the muzzle no matter whether he walks nicely or pulls.

You can see the difference between the two. The first link is to a Gentle Leader the second one is for a Halti.

You are right that they do work similarly and they both kind of look the same, etc. but it makes a huge difference on the training.
Ah, I see. My Gentle Leader that I originally bought was a little big so it never really did fit too snugly and I only used it once or twice along time ago so I didn't even realize much of a difference. I ended up buying a Halti as the correct sized replacement for the GL and thought it was ok. I really don't like having to worry about having a "tool" to walk the dogs so I'm glad that we trained out of it-- the training being just showing Bear the Halti while we were walking. He hated it so much, he'd see it and walk better so he didn't have to wear it!
Gentle leaders or Haltis are supposed to be only for training the dog to walk on leash nicely. They are not for forever. The way I teach my clients to use it - if the client wants to use it - is that I make them put two leashes on the dog. One leash is on the regular collar the other one is on the Halti/GL. When the dog pulls, they tug on the regular leash a little bit to let the dog know he is pulling and then stop walking so the dogs head turns back. This way the dog learns that when he feels the tug on the regular leash (when he is pulling) his head will turn and he can't go the way he wants to. This tug is not a jerk, it's just to let the dog know that his head is going to be turned away.

So, you end up dropping the Halti/GL at the end and only use the regular collar on the dog. I hope I explained it well...it's so much easier to show it.
Our OES puppy is only 1 weeks old. I use a gentle leader type harness in the US when I walk my wife's family Lab when we visit. It's the kind that goes behind the neck and over the snout and really helps control. I was not thinking of using the same thing on out puppy just yet, just wondering when would be a good time to start. We tried putting a leash on him indoors to get him used to it but so far he does not like it and plonks himself down on the floor! Is that normal?

This is a very useful forum and the benefit of all your experience is very welcome. Thank you.

Your puppy is a week old?? Then you shouldn't worry about putting a gentle leader on him or even a leash! You can put a collar on him so he gets used to that but I don't see the point of putting a leash on him.

When you put a collar on him the first time, he will probably sit down and scratch it all the time but it's not a big deal. He'll get used to it.

When you walk a 2 months old puppy, he should stay pretty close to you. They can't run that fast and because you provide safety they stay close to you. I personally didn't put a leash on my puppy until he was about 4-5 months old. Then the main reason I had to put a leash on him was so when he had the "puppy crazies", he wouldn't get hurt by running away.

If he starts chewing on the leash, say "NO" and carry on walking. The leash should not be a big deal for him. It should mean that he is going to have fun by going for a walk. If he doesn't have good leash manners and you don't think you can control him then you can start thinking about the gentle leader. ;)

I hope this helps.
I'm going to guess you meant that your puppy is 10 weeks old & not 1 weeks--

It didn't take long for my Basil to get strong enough that my girlfriend was worried about him tugging on the leash (we lived in the city of Chicago at the time, so walking even for potty breaks was a must and there was plenty of people/dogs for him to want to go check out). I was going to get a gentle lead collar so she could feel more in control when walking him, but my local groomer/dog supply store said that it might cause problems for him if it rubbed where the hair parts on the bridge of the nose and steered me toward this:

It does very well at re-directing the force of a dog's pull & it didn't take long for Basil to learn that pulling was a futile enterprise. I got one a little too large for him at the time & still use it to this day.
