Sheepie with GI issue and leg pain

Hello. I have a six year old OES named Winston. He is the love of my life -My issue is that he is having some pain in his rear leg area. He struggles getting up and is sore after play. We have done a TPLO with water therapy on both back legs now ( we did the first when he was three and the other last April). I currently give him bi weekly shots of Adequan and due to a GI issue ( discovered two years ago)- he only eats Royal Canine limited ingredient Venison and Potatoe food. I was giving him Cosequin before the GI issue - but now I don't give him anything in order not to upset his GI. I give him Zubrin when he seems sore - but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about about something similar to a Glucosime/Chrondroitin or something that might help him- but not upset his stomach. It was never fully determined, but I think his GI issue was due in part to the Cosequin. By the way according to the vets - his hips are perfect and he isn't overweight. The only other thing is that his left rear leg shakes when he is excited, nervous or just becasue. None of the vets think this is an issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just love him and want to do my best to make his life the best it can be.

Hi to a fellow Minnesotan :)

It sounds like you are doing a lot for Winston, and all seems like a normal course of treatment, with his surgeries and follow-up.

I haven't had the ortho experience with dogs like others here, but I am a nurse in human orthopedics. Has your vet had you try any meds to protect his stomach? It does sound like he is on meds that do cause stomach problems. I don't know what ones are used on the dogs, but with people they usually are routinely given when any of the stronger NSAIDS or pain meds are given.

Mine are on a human glucosamine/chondroitin supplement daily, and I have not noticed stomach upset. BUT, they aren't getting other strong meds that may upset their stomachs either.

Also, if his hips are OK (yay), did they give you any idea where the current pain may be coming from?
Thank you for your response. Winston's left leg seems to be the issue- we have done tons of x-rays but no one seems to find anything. Something just isn't right though - you know? I have been reading a lot about people giving glucosine & fish oil getting great results. I thought I would see if anyone had any ideas or similar experiences.

PS - We just moved to MN from MT - The people here are very nice and it is very pretty here---but it sure is COLD!!!!! 8O
Welcome - yes it is cold! Although the last few days have been nice.

In addition to the G/C - I use one with MSM. The MSM can be purchased seperate or formulated with the G/C. I use fish oil or flaxseed oil too. I alternate. I get them at Walmart - the Spring Valley brand. I know several OES and basset people who use these with good results.
Hi,

I have two dogs with arthritic problems, Ole Blue is approaching his 19th birthday and Panda, is 7 1/2 has moderate hip dyslasia in both hips.

I read some online stuff regarding natural foods that help with arthritis and there seems to be some benefits giving them green muscles. It's located in the frozen food section of most supermarkets.

Blue is now on Medecam as glucosamine is no longer effective for him but at his age he's still active and rough houses with Merlin the youngest dog.

Panda get glucosamine.

Both eat a lot of salmon, green muscles, and I'll be buying some milk thistle at a natural food store next payday as it's a natural immune booster and helps offset the potential liver damage of medacam. My previous sheepie who lived to 15 although she had immune deficientcy thrombocytopenia was on a diet of natural foods such as sweet potato, chicken broth, carrots, and other beta carotene veggies.

You may want to visit a homeopathic doctor or vet to get some ideas on what foods assist the body.

Best wishes to you
Marianne
I read your post about Winston. It caught my attention because my duchess is 1.5 and has torn crudicranial legimentes-I am going to have to get surgury on both her knees. Sounds like you may have some experience I could learn from..The ortho wants to try a taa instead of the tplo for a discounted price of 1700 per knee instead of 2700 per knee. I am curious as to how well Winston did after the first surgery and is this the same leg he is having problems with--My heart goes out to your sheepie..Let me know if you may have advice to offer. Sorry I am a novice regarding sheepies.
Kate
Hi Kate.

I am not familiar with the TAA (I am sorry). I can tell you that we have had good luck with the TPLO procedure. We had Winston's right rear leg done first and then he needed his left rear leg done last Spring. The water therapy really seemed to help Winston heal quicker and better. The water facility wasn't available for his first procedure and we really noticed that the healing time was better with the water therapy.

Also, if you are able to, I would try to get the procedures done as soon as possible. We waited until Winston was three before we had his first leg done. He was two years old when we finally figured out what was wrong it. It took us so long to get his knee done becasue we lived in rural Montana at the time and there were't any vets that I trusted doing this procedure - we wound up taking him to Washington. Anyway, I think waiting may have caused more arthritus to develop and is possibly why Winston struggles getting up now.

Good Luck with your Duchess. She will have a long road to recovery - but I can tell she has a good Mom that loves her and she will be ok.

Sending Sheepie hugs your way.

Stephanie & Winston
I am totally unable to give any advice or experience with anything mentioned except this:

My Bosley boy does this, too. Sometimes just one leg, sometimes both....My vet says it appears to be neurological (sp)..,,We are used to it now, but for someone who sees it happening for the first time it is quite bizarre...
