She lives in Chicago. She would like a male puppy with white head and a TAIL! I don't know if there are any breeders in the states that would not crop a puppy's tail... I told her that finding a puppy may take a while (even 6 months) especially with her expectations but she said "the sooner the better" of course. Can any of you help me find the right dog and breeder for her? Thank you! |

Temperament & health should always be at the top of a puppy buyer's list.
All the reputable breeders through the OESCA (Old English Sheepdog Club of America) referral list will dock tails, and if there are people in the US selling them with tails, I personally would steer clear as they are not following the OESCA breed standard. Guarantee of all white heads are difficult and usually long-time breeders roll their eyes at that request. If she really does not want a "bobtail", she should look to importing a puppy from Europe, as they have banned docking. Maybe a puppy will become available through rescue, but she might have to wait a while. If you can convince her to let go of the markings and tails she should contact breeders (PHONE CALLS ARE BEST vs EMAIL) from the OESCA referral found on their site http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org/ |
This is exactly what I told her that temperament and health are the most important things and if she really wants the tail she will have to get a dog from Europe.
One of my Hungarian breeder have a male puppy with a tale but not with a white head. I will ask both of them about him. He is such a cutie! Thank you for the list, I will forward them to her. Also, can you (OES breeders on the forum) give me permission to give her your websites? |
more than happy to have her visit my website. www.gbwebs.com/gwynedd however, i will not leave a tail on an oes. This is going to beome a big contention again i see, but it is one that our club is looking into making a DISQUALIFICATION in this country in our breed ring. |
A WHITE tail? Not yet seen one of those.. does anyone have a sheepie with a white tail? Please post pics if you find one, I would love to see that! |
i don't think she meant a white tail. She wants a all white head and a dog with a tail.
First, getting a dog with a tail from a reputable breeder in the usa will be almost if not totally impossible. MAYBE from a BYB or a puppymill. Second, we in the USA do not have a problem with splashes or flashes as they are called in other countries. No one from the other countries seems to be able to tell us WHAT having a bit of white in the gray has to do with being able to herd ?? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Kudos to the OESCA committee's for starting the work on our breed standard after how many umpteen years! Also for keeping the tailed dogs OUT of the OES booth at the Eukanuba show recently........ if someone wants one with a tail............... get a beardie |

Ali is right, my client wants a male puppy with white head and a dog with a long tail. I did tell her I would ask breeders in the states even though I know the chance to get a good puppy from a reputable breeder and with a tail is very small but I also told her that it is possible to get a dog from Europe (with a tail) that will probably cost her a lot more. Thank you Ali for sharing your thoughts and I will give her your website to look at. For now, I'm collecting as much information as possible! |
oops! Sorry, I got it wrong!
My dog has a white patch on his tail and a white tip -I love it! Don't worry too much about the tail debate, everyone has their own opinions & I personally don't think your friend is wrong for wanting a sheepie with a tail, just make sure it's the right type of dog, the best breed for your friend, thats the most important thing. |
Mine have tails,(with white tips) a little weird to get use to at first, but now you do not even notice. YOU do keep your coffee table clean, or you may be wearing your drink or washing the floor. |
I know of several breeders, that are affiliated with OESCA and on the breeder referral list, that have sold a pup with a tail.
I think that it is a matter of personal preference and certainly if a breeder was able to find a quality, loving home for a "pet" quality dog -- I would hope that they wouldn't turn that person away simply because they wanted their dog to have the tail on versus the bobtail. I prefer OES without the tail -- but I think if your friend is interested -- possibly contact breeders to inquire about selling a pet quality dog and leave the tail on -- I think you may be surprised by the response. I do agree with Ali that OESCA needs to take a firm stance and establish a clear set of rules regarding tails in the ring if showing in the U.S. Our US standard clearly states that the tail is to be "docked close to the body when not naturally bob tailed" . Seems pretty clear to me. Good luck to your friend and hope they find all that they are looking for. |
Thank you all for your replies and help! I have a couple of breeders so now it's up to her who is the right breeder for her. I'm sure we will find the perfect puppy for her. |
