They didn't originally just have blue. Blue, brown or one of each is the standard for the breed-- the darker brown, the better. The biggest concern is that always if your breeder has done all the appropriate genetic testing and that the parents have scored well. That will best determine a healthy future for your pup. |
thanks for the reply we are new to owning a oes but have always loved them , i know the mum and dad have good hip scores and the breeder is of very high standard just dont seem to see as many blue eyes just wondered what the generally view was on the blue eyes , p.s we now love the oes a milion times more after seeing our new pup |
Hi welcome to the forum.
My first oes had white face and blue eyes only one of a litter of 7 pups. When he turned 2yrs his eyes changed to brown. |
Hi I see you are in the UK where abouts are you! |
Hi and welcome to the forum, where do you live in the UK ? maybe we can give you a contact person for advice regarding puppies. |
hi where down in devon we are getting are dog from a brilliant breeder in umberliegh not far from our house an info or advice is greatly recieved |
For showing it really does not matter, pick the one that the breeder thinks will be the better show dog conformation wise out of the two girls.
For your information too on eye colour, That standard says Brown eyes, wall eyes (one blue one brown) are preferred, two blue eyes are acceptable. Brown eyes should be dark, no light hazel or goldie colour, the darker the better. Blue eyes come in a nice dark cornflower blue colour or what they call a Pearl colour sort of a watery blue hue to the eye Colour. Best wishes with your decision and let your breeder guide you as to the pick of the two bitches. They know there lines and how they develope the best for which one out of the two will be the better one to be shown. Welcome to the forum too from the land downunder. |
we are picking her up on sunday so will have some photos soon |
Welcome and congrats! Sounds like you are getting a puppy from a great breeder who has done health checks on her sire and dam.
Just something to note. I am sure your pup is fine, but congenital deafness can be an issue with white-headed, blue-eyed pups. The deafness is connected to the gene that produces lack of pigment, and can occur occassionally in certain bloodlines of OES. Just something to be aware of....... Having said that, my Oscar is deaf, and brown-eyed. Go figure!!!!! But he is about 70% white. Congrats and we look forward to hearing more about your pup. Laurie and Oscar |
thanks for the advice i will have a talk to the breeder about the deefness but where in love with her now so take our chances |
Hi Laurie, you answered your own question due to the fact your OES is 70% white there is a greater possibility of deafness, but is this a problem in the breed, after 15 years in the breed I have heard of very few deaf OES's it is not so common and in my opinion at the moment we do not have a great problem with it well at least in Europe . "Billiehiggs and belle" Have fun with the new puppy and do not worry to much about deafness, make sure they are good breeders and you become a kennel club pedigree, essential is the hip scores and that the eyes have been tested & are clear some people would like to test for all the possible things that can happen which in my opinion is unnecessary, although we do have to watch or lovely breed closely and if you decide to show when the girl gets old enough I wish you lots of luck . I would be interested from which kennel she is coming from. |
