Markings do not make the dog.... however, with that said, caution.
More white is not necessarily a bad thing, but a pup that is mostly white may be prone to deafness, blindness and other congenital anomolies. Old English are best known with white bellies, chests, paws, and some of their head, if not all. They usually have a black saddle type shape of black over their backs that covers their rumps and down at least part of the backs of their legs. The black turns to grey as they mature, as I'm sure you're aware, I just mention black as that is how they appear as pups. I would strongly recommend choosing a breeder that is close enough that you are willing to drive or fly out to meet and see the pups before choosing one or making a payment to make sure they in good living conditions, healthy, well socialized, and meet the parents. There have been many bad experiences and heartaches with people wh have bought their pups online, as they often, but not always come from puppy mills. The internet is a great place to start, but it is just that, a start, IMO. Good luck on your search for a pup! And a lot of good places to look are the akc, ckc, oesca etc breeder referal sites. Also, have you considered rescuing an adult? Welcome to the forum! |
I completely agree with Willowsprite. Please, please, please do not buy a puppy from a breeder who advertises on the internet. I know they are all absolutely the cutest things but they are regularly not the best quality. It is best to find a breeder who does not advertise but has a very good "word of mouth" reputation.
I've had my heart broken by two "broken" sheepies who were from back yard breeders and 1 had to be put down because a bad habit of biting. Good breeders take very special care in making sure mom and dad is healthy and of good temperment. Here's a website with some good tips: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... nglish.htm You can network with OES rescue people. They know all the good and bad out there. They will also try to steer you away from getting an OES but if you're like me - there is no other dog who can match their comic zeal. So - please be patient and search hard. There is a pup out there for you! |
i think willowsprite was trying to say to investigate every breeder thoroughly and to not purchase a pup sight unseen from some ad online, not to shun those who have websites or ads online. After all, if they didn't get the word out, no one would buy their dogs. I actually find it more pleasing for breeders to post information online, dog photos, etc, because you may find out far more than you would normally think to ask.
when i was looking for roofus i saw a dog that was totally white with a small black mark near its butt. Intriguing, sure, but not what I picture an OES to look like! Actually, my roo doesn't look at all like what I had wanted for the past seven years... I wanted a totally white head! And now after having him, I wouldn't trade him for a lifetime of whiteheaded oes. In fact, now I think ones with totally white heads are a little odd... but it just depends on the breeder and their dogs. Make sure you thoroughly interrogate every potential breeder! |
Who you callin odd???
|
Is that Sky? Adorable! |
And Dancer of course says whiteheads ARE odd!!!
So There! |
I love my first whiteheaded dog but my others have colored ears. I think it's a lot of personality!
(Don't let Norman the whitehead see this, he'll be offended. ) |
I LOVE your new pic (Avatar) Willowsprite!! So Gorgeous.
...as I tap my feet and wait patiently for my own (sigh) |
Thank you, that is actually an older picture of Dancer. She was about 5 or 6 months old in that pic I think. I shaved her down at 7 months, so it was definitely before that! LOL
I can't believe my baby girl will be a year old next month! |
