For those considering being in a therapy dog group

My mom has been ill for four months, three being spent in local hospitals, one being a hospital Guinness and I visit. These past months have been hard and I wanted to do something "normal" I had not visited this hospital for a month (my mom is now in this hospital) This is a letter the coordinator of my group recieved. This visit was done on the 23rd of Dec.

Dear Vicki,

My name is Kellie(last name deleted), a PRN occupational therapist at Harford Memorial Hospital. This morning I had the pleasure of meeting Guinness, a most adorable pet therapy dog. I had just finished a difficult evaluation where my patient was depressed and lonely, scared about spending the upcoming holiday alone and sick in the hospital. Before I left the room we had a special visit from Guinness, and my patient, for the first time all morning, broke out in a hugh twinkling smile. She actively petted him and immediatly brightened up. Not to mention how Guinness brightened my day as well!! I just wanted to formally commend you on this program. It is these little things, small blessings, and ties to our normal lifes that keep our patients engaged, hopefull, and on the road to recovery. I appreciate all you do!

Sincerely
Kellie (last name deleted)

Although there was no mention of the wonderful handler 8O . I was moved by this brief note and very proud of my rescue dog that no one wanted and was headed to the pound!

Good Boy Guinness!!

:hearts: :hearts: :hearts: WONDERFULLLLL!!!!!!!!
Guiness is truly a Christmas angel.
That is a very sweet note. People really ARE that appreciative of having the dogs visit. Some are amazed that we actually do all the visits as volunteers - they assume we get paid for it.

The satisfaction and enjoyment myself and my various dogs have gotten in the over the 22 years I have done this keep me coming back for more.
Thanks for sharing the message - good boy Guinness!
That is so heartwarming. I'm glad you got that back, you deserve it.
That's awesome. It's really nice to hear those things.
Good boy Guiness!!:hearts:
Really heartwarming!
First, I am sorry to hear about your Mom's ill health. I hope she gets better soon.

As for Guiness :hearts: , what a wonderful gift he is and he keeps giving. Thank you for doing this with your bundle of furball sheepie! :clappurple:

I too, am amazed at how many people thinl we get paid, and a lot of people ask me if he is my dog. They think he belongs to the group and I just bring him in. The reward durning Christmas (after this letter was sent I took him in Christmas eve!) season was the reaction of the staff and patients, that is pay enough. They all know him (I can bet only a few know my name but that is fine with me :D ) They all kneel down and hug him and always ask if they can pet him!! I remind them that he is there for the staff as well as the patients. I always let them know that he is a rescue and remind them what a dog that was cast aside can become. He is truly an ambasador for the breed, rescue and therapy dogs. Thank you all for your kind notes.

Cindy
I hear the same thing - if the dogs are ours or belong to the group. :D

I work at the hospital we visit - and staff are hugging my dog before they even look up and see it is me on the other end of the lead!!

Staff and residents at the homes we visit know all the dog's names, but would be hard pressed to think of more than a couple of us human's names.
What a sweet note and such rewarding work you do. It brings such joy to everyone to hug a sheepie. :D
