The ingredients do look pretty good but, being grain free, the protein percentage is pretty high. I'd be concerned with too much protein with an adult dog-- it's almost the equivalent of feeding an adult dog puppy food, which can make the dog fat or cause other health problems. I'd monitor how the dog does and make sure that you adjust portioning or supplement with grains accordingly to create a healthy balance. Good luck! |
we have started using the fish as we try to eliminate allergans in Marley's diet. SHe is a apicky eater and seems to be eating it easily. |
Whole Dog Journal does extensive articles on food, try looking there and see what they say about it. Is there a reason you're going grain free? |
she was itching way to much on everything ive changed shampoos and everything you can imagine but she continues to itch made me think it was possible due to the grains. She is doing fine on the food and her weight is good I am just thinking in long terms if it was safe being on high protein I didnt really think it was all that high personally but some people do. I am considering trying the natural balance raw doing 1/2 that with 1/2 taste of the wild, cause i hear raw is a good route to go but i just cant put the effort into making it all the time nor the time. |
How old is she? |
7 mths old, she was eating natural balance ultra premium and the doc said try taking her offthat shes itching so we then went to chicken soup she itched on that so i am now on taste of the wild and i just cant keep switching the poor puppy shes to young for all the switching. i feel bad but the itching is so bad that its every 2 min she stops to itch and its real bad in her face area and im not sure why i dont see red yeast or anything. I am using a very mild oatmeal shampoo. |
oh and my uncle does all her grooming ( he use to cut dogs hair) and plucks the hairs and cleans her ears teeth and cuts and files her nails and does her anal glands. So I dont think its a grooming related problem. |

Remember that when trying a new food, the dog can't have even one tiny treat outside the prescribed test dog food or you may not get accurate results. We did a food trial with Panda and Hill's z/d Ultra. I think they recommend you test a hypoallergenic food for 6-10 weeks? http://www.marvistavet.com/html/food_allergies.html She's pretty young to have already developed environmental allergies (molds, dust, dust mites, etc.) though I'm NOT a vet. But you might look at things she's coming into contact with. Do you use the sprinkle type carpet cleaners/deodorizers? Look at her bedding... could she possibly be allergic to it? Laundry detergent or softener... the fabric? Ask your vet if an antihistamine might help reduce the intense itching... there are a few to choose from. We've been through this with a couple of our dogs... I give allergy shots to two of them so I know your frustration. We've been dealing with allergies for about 2 1/2 years now and have been able to avoid steroids so far. As for shampoos, you might look into an antiseptic shampoo... the dog can develop a secondary infection if they scratch so much that they damage the skin. Good luck to you and your pup. |
no sure were you are... if that fails you can try your pup on ACANA it is great, in pet stores and it break down on protein, carbs , fat are good. They have all types. I have mine on it and they love it... I had a client whos dog was itching and they did everything to find the problem(grooming, ears, etc) but she also changed the food over to Acana and the dog stopped itching within a week. |
We switched to Taste of the Wild when the price of Timberwolf skyrocketed. I mix it with warm water, which my vet said would help dilute the protein. My dogs love it. |
I dont think we sale ACANA but i can look online were still testing out taste of the wild, i dont really think the protein is really all that high because people who feed raw give out about that much or more and there dogs are exceptionally well such as my aunts dog who eats raw and the precentage is higher than in this food. Were gonna just keep testing it out, and I dont put any water in the food she wont eat it that way ive tried a few times. But so far shes doing okay on it just gonna have to take time to see if the itching subsides if not i may just go premade raw and see if that helps and if not from there def. look into some sort of allergy testing , something just isnt right to itch that bad every 2 minutes.
Thanks for all the help! |
It takes time for the offending allergen to leave the system. We discovered Panda was allergic to the Christmas tree after about a week indoors- we think it was molds. She was scratching her ears 'til they bled along with licking and scooting. We took the tree down, cleaned thoroughly and put up an artificial tree instead. About a week later the symptoms subsided.
Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell. When running a blood test, high levels of eosinophils may indicate allergies or parasites according to our vet and also Dr. Dodds. We've seen high levels of eosinophils in our allergic sheepies when doing annual blood work... they are said to play a major role in allergic reactions. But this doesn't tell you what's actually causing the problem... only that there is one. Quote: Eosinophils are considered the main effector cells in allergic responses and asthma pathogenesis and are associated with disease severity. They also fight helminth (worm) colonization and may be slightly elevated in the presence of certain parasites. |
