Chelsea is light gray and seems to get lighter everytime we brush her- I've seen really light gray in pics and movies (Please Don't Eat the Daisies)- however, I've never seen a light gray OES in real life. Is this normal? Most I've had/met seem to range from dark to med gray, but Chelsea is so light she is almost blending (!) Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Up. |

Max has very light grey hair also, the only part that is dark is one leg (still blackish) and his rear end. When I get him clipped, it looks darker, but most of his hair is almost blending into the white. |
Yay!
We are not weird! ( well relatively speaking) Thanks. Up. |
Hello!
I had OES puppy(his name - Darik) which had a very light dark part when he was 10-15 months old (he was looked almost white!). Now to this OES 3 years old and he has amazing blue colour of dark part! It is possible, that yours OES is still young |
I've heard that OES puppies are dark, almost black on the colored part of their coat and that as they get older, the dark turns lighter. This must be true because Truman used to be quite dark and now he's getting lighter and lighter. His legs are a pale gray now..... |
There are several different shades of grey and silver. It may just be a very light color variation. |
don't forget the blue color! One of the first OES I met was a wonderful blue! He was beautiful and oh so gentle. My 10 week OES would maul him and he'd just sit there and take it like a loving Grandfather. When you see a blue, you'll know it. Also the pups are lighter when they are brushed and fluffed...........and clean, LOL. Obviously with old Muddog here, that will never be seen |
My Sammy is very light. He almost looks white. Grayish white on backend, and all white towards the front.
When he was a puppy around 5 months he was very dark gray/ with white. |
I went and double checked both Oliver and now Oreo are blue. I checked their AKC papers. I remember Oliver had a blue scalp near his butt. Oliver got darker as he got older. When we registered them we used the ggray and white for markings, if I wrote blue they might not understand it. |
My breeder told me that when pup they are very dark. Our pup had a black patch over his eye. I loved it. Bye bye black patch. His whole front half is now white and hind section is grayish black. |
Presley was extremely light - until she turned about 3 years old she started to darken. |
Virtually all OES experience a lightening of their grizzle coat, whether that be gray, blue or on the rare occassion grey blended with a substantial amount of black. (I would say all but no doubt as soon as that would be said someone would bring up an example of the dog who didn't lighten with age. )
The vast majority of OES are born with the grizzle area of their coat being black or extremely dark gray insufferably cute little bugwugs they are . As they age that darkness naturally diminishes and the gray shades take over. When he arrived at home, 4 months of age, our Martin Zephram was still very dark, no longer black but a good antracite gray for sure. He got noticably grayer by the month and took a marked step towards a medium gray when he "blew coat" at 10 months. The big boy has continued to lighten constantly so that now just shy of 3 years of age his grizzle is a medium to light gray with some areas showing up silver when his coat is parted , really quite distinguished. (You can see this on his grooming photos, he was the model for the "show grooming" thread photos, which will be posted in the next few days.) I expect that by the time Martin is a senior he will be predominantly silver at the surface and nearly white when his grizzle is parted. The other thing to note is that if your OES for some reason looses a "chunk" of hair, pulled out for what ever reason, caught under a chair etc, it will intially grow back very dark . Both Martin and Virgil have the occassional dark tuffets of hair in their gray grizzle matrix. It is always a dead giveaway when I am grooming them that they have lost some hair recently and then it is interesting to watch this little tuffet gradually lighten to match the overall colour , taking about 3-5 months depending on how large the new tuffet is. Lightening of the Grizzle to nearly white is NOT the same as a dog born with a large proportion of white colouring on his/her body. It is not a genetic marker for susceptablity to hearing loss or blindness. You should not be concerned about this. It is part of their "natural order" and is not a problem in any respect - other than cleaning as they get lighter !! Cheers Carl |
