Do you put your sheepie's hair in a top knot or piggy tails?? If you do, is it up ALL the time?? If not when do you put it up?? Heart's hairs on the sides of her nose stick straight out...so even if I put it up, she still can't see because of her "side hairs"...What is the solution for this??? I am at a loss... When we go to puppy class, even though I put her hair up (and it has to be kind of tight cuz her hair, although profuse...is not long enuff for a "bun"..) the instructor makes comments about her sight..."How can she see???" ( I tell her I am her seeing eye person---for lack of a good answer.....) Once again, dear forum...any help will be welcomed, appreciated and very much needed...... |

I know we have had this discussion before - I think it was with Clyde and Jill last time.
This is after a bath - no topknot at all: We do all the above! We started with pigtails - it gets more hair and holds it in better when it is short. LeAnne's Clay during his transition. This is Nita's hint: I leave Chewie's in a topknot all the time. the only time it is out is for grooming or bathing/drying. He loves his in - he hates running into things. He will come sit right in front of me to get his ponytail in. As an older puppy, with it all grown out: And now - at 20 months. Note him sitting on the staff person's leg at a therapy dog visit. He loved her and sat on her to prove it! |
Thanks Dawn....I tried to search topics but nothing came up...will try again...Is sitting on people a sheepie thing??? If I sit on the floor...Pearl seems to think I am there for her to put her tusch on!!!!
BTW--LOVE the middle tails...kind of takes care of some of the nose hair!!!! |
Ours have all been lovers of sitting on people.
Chewie is especially fond of it, because he thinks everyone loves him. At visits people want to pet his head, and instead he turns and sits on their feet. They get big smiles when I explain he only does that to the people he likes! |
Now Summer is about the same age. I tend to wet her face comb and part hair on her nose then grab the hair above her eyes and use a hairslide or band, but it doesnt stay in long. I dont like it in her eyes I must admit....it needs to grow a bit longer though.. |
You can also put in those hair clips. I used them on Obe instead of the pig tails. Got darker colored ones or clear until his was long enough to put in a top knot. Now his hair stays up unless we are grooming, or he is rolling around and it comes out. Which in that case he will come to me so we can put it back up in a top knot. |
I will post pictures later....Still can't see her eyes. If I take ALL the hair I should, and band it...she can't close her eyes..it's pathetic.... I am doing something wrong. |
You might not be able to get all of her hair - thats ok. I found that the little bands worked best when Bing was a little guy and I use big hairbands now that he is older. Try and grab the hair lower on the forehead - this tends to help!! Good luck! |
Keeping the hair out of Abi's eyes became an obsession with me after I read that they could run into something and hurt themselves. As soon as I would put her hair up...she would take it out and maybe eat it. I found many neon bands in her stool! Her hair is now long enough so that I can put two knots in very loosely. The looser the knot the better chance I had of her keeping it in because it didn't quite bother her as much. Because her hair is still short, I have to use two knots parallel to one another just above the brow area and a tiny one almost inbetween her eyes. Looks a little silly but she doesn't run into things as much and can almost keep track of an object being thrown for her I finally found success with bands that I purchased at a beauty supply store. They were less than $1 and I think there are 250 in the pkg. They don't pull the hair out if you are patient when removing them. They sell the bands for braiding hair. The key was obsession. I put them on, she takes them out, I put them on,she...Now a couple of weeks later with the longer hair and the right band she actually sits next to me for me to put them in I have a picture of her with the three knots if you need a visual. |
I should have added that I always take the knots out at night. I have long hair and most of the summer have a ponytail. If I keep my hair in a ponytail for too long, I get a headache. She may also so at night out they go. |
I also use elastics, work real good the ouch less ones. Sami ran into a parked truck not once BUT twice (JUNE 07) did the stop drop and roll and I thought she was going to attack the truck, she really did not know what happened, thank goodness not hurt, silly thing but her hair then was hard to put up, if I used clips out they came, now Blue pulls them out. BUT those elastics are great just got to catch the dog. |
Bailey has really long hair and always wears a topknot. I take it down when I comb her out every week and for baths. My husband will ask her if she "wants your eyes fixed?" and she will run into my bathroom where we keep the rubberbands.
I need to find the picture of Bailey with her Juliet braids - the diamond pattern flat against the head. I couldn't believe she laid there and let me do it. Riley has shorter hair, so she gets doggie ears. Soemtimes 3 or 4 topknots, sometimes just two. I do admit that they like them a bit loose, so they don't pull their eyes in funny shapes. |

Anxiously waiting for a visual on this............................. |
I want to see them too. - Not sure what you call Juliet braids??
I have french braided Chewie's a couple times - starting in the front between his eyes and go through the back to his occiput. It does work well and lays flat. |
I don't know how to describe it very well, but I will try. The photos are packed away for safety during construction (predigital camera).
The front hairline: small chunks of hair are pulled straight back and a rubberband/hairholder applied to each chunk. The resulting chunk of hair is divided into two chunks, each of which will be added to the half chunk next to it and the new chunks are rubberbanded together. While you are separating and adding chunks, you also scoop up the hair underneath to add in. This lays tight against the scalp and basically forms a diamond pattern, with the rubberbands at each of the four points of the diamond. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/ /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ \/\/\/\/\/\/\/ |
I can't braid worth a darn. I've been trying to do my own hair in those braids for years and I never get it right. I can't even French braid but someone else did Clyde's hair in one French braid from between the eyes going back once and it worked great. I need some skilled person to do it again. |

Millie, my Beardie, and I would visit Shriners Hospital and Cardinal Glennon for therapy visits. The other dogs would be retrieving balls, walking next to the wheelchairs etc.... Millie would be laying on her side with about 6 of the young girls around her. I supplied the rubber bands and beads----the girls would spend the time braiding her hair. By the time out visit ended, Millie would have about 20 braids on her ranging from regular braids, to fancy ones such as french and "fishbone". interwoved (grammer?) with colorful beads. I was amazed that they could braid so well...I am like you..can't braid very well at all..... |
George would manage to get whatever was holding his hair back within about 5 mins of putting it in.
He's now clipped! |
Thanks for the Juliet braid description - I have seen them, but never knew the name!
Chewie would lay and let himself get all braided up. That is a good idea and I will remember that for the next visit we have with little girls. That would have worked well at the 4-H camp he was "camp dog" at last summer. (I was the camp nurse.) We hope to do it again this summer too. |

Word of Warning: When we would get home from the visits...Millie would immediately shake!!!!! Alot of the beads would scatter on my hard wood floors.......I would be picking up beads for the next 2 weeks ...but it was so worth it.....those girls had so much fun!!!!! |
Nigel is about the same age. I keep him in a top knot all the time. He gets too many eye goopies otherwise. I too was putting a pony on the bridge of his nose...but it's starting to be long enough to get most of it in one. I just don't pull it too tight so it doesn't hold his eyes open. |
I used to have waist length hair that I would French braid for work. It took me less than 5 minutes and I never looked in a mirror. (Oh, to be young and cute again)
My daughter had long, blonde hair with gorgeous natural highlights. It would take me 30 minutes to braid her hair, on the rare occassion she would permit it, and it never looked very good. Good thing I was a hairdresser as I would have starved! |
Laci and Mony with their hair up.
|
That is so adorable!!!
Somedays I really wish Chweie was a girl!!! OK, I probably could "doll" him up and take him out. Now that his hair has grown out enough again to cover the "jewels", no one would ever know!!! |
I LOVE those bright clips!!!!!
Do they stay in??? (I have tried clips in Heart's hair...but as soon as she shakes, they fly off her head...) If there are special clips I need...let me know where to get them. They are so much cuter than just rubber bands.... |
Hehe, I'm definately getting a girl next |

I agree! I LOVE Tucker to bits and pieces and otherwise adore having a male dog, but it just isn't the same! Here's a question for other male OES owners: do you find that people mistake your dog for a girl when he has a top knot? Or does he still look "boyish" enough?? I just ended up trimming Tucker's hair a little bit in front of his eyes, but it seems that no matter how short I trim it, it still falls back in his eyes again!! Do you guys use the little elastics intended for braiding? |
Yes, people think he is a girl. But, they agree he needs the ponytail to see, so they understand the ponytail after I explain it. I use "boy colors" too! Sometimes I am really tempted just to put some pink or purple ones in though!!!
I sometimes use the little rubber ones for braiding, but they are kind of hard to put in and remove. Mostly I use the ponytail holders - smaller ones with no metal clips on them. The no pull ones. I usually buy the bags of all black. Boring, but good for everyday. I tried the ones with rubber grippers woven in, but they really rip out hair - bad! Chewie loves his ponytails - he comes right over and sits in front of me to have me fix his hair. He is so sweet. |
unlike pandas sisters...she wont keep a bow, clip or ponytail in....
she is all tomboy........sigh......... |
Yes everyone thinks Rufus is a girl. I found some small clear rubber bands which stay in quite well. It's a fight to get them in & out, Ru throws himself on the floor and really struggles to get away. But I think he likes being able to see. He sometimes paws at it at first, I'm using the 'leave it' command, he forgets it's there if we are walking or playing. |
Found the clips at a drug store. They are the one you put in babies hair. Laci left hers in, Mony didn't |
