Nail problem

My sheepie started to bleed this morning from his rear right paw. There was a lot of blood. It stopped with pressure then began again. We brought him to the vet - at first the vet said nothing was wrong that a nail might be worn down. When back in the car it started bleeding again. Back to the vet. This time the vet said he is wearing his nails down to bleeding. Has anyone heard of this? The vet also tranquilized him - i am not crazy about that. any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

thanks

Did the vet say if there's a problem with his nails... like maybe being brittle?

Does he scuff or drag his feet when he walks? Sometimes a gait problem can cause uneven wear of the toenails.

Panda scuffs her hind feet when she walks due to the hip dysplasia... it's most noticeable when she's walking on carpet. The nails on her back feet are never as long as the front ones. So I trim the back nails only a little and probably every other time I clip her front nails.

I wonder if something like this would help... maybe something to ask your vet about?

Not sure this helps any... please keep us posted?
Walter pulls on the leash and this causes his back nails to wear down pretty quickly, we actually have never had to get them trimmed, only the front ones. Maybe that can be the cause? If so I know they make nail cap things for cats so they don't ruin the furniture- maybe you can look into something like that or booties for when you go for walks on the cement
Good thoughts. My concern is the amount of blood. I never had this happen with any of my dogs. I don't want to give him the tranquilizers. his breeder thinks he should have antibiotics and possible xray. I don't see him dragging his legs. Gait seems fine. The vet feels he walks with the weigth mostly on his hind legs. i am not happy with the vet after today, the first time we went today i asked if he starts bleeding again what should i do - her reply was to put him outside! oh no! Has anyone had a nail worn down like this? I and the breeder just don't feel comfortable with the assesment,
I am no expert but is she wearing her nail to the quick??? They do tend to bleed ALOT if you clip the nail to the quick. I know when I take Pearl, my 9 year old OES to get her nails clipped...they never have to clip her back nails since they are always ground down with the way she runs on the concrete.
Talk about a double brush off! They didn't mention styptic powder? Maybe boots for awhile? Are the nails damaged? Malformed? Recently clipped, unevenly clipped?

Even if the vet has no clue, they should be more helpful with stemming the blood flow. Compassion is lacking there.
Nails will bleed a lot, if cut (or apparently, worn) to the quick, just like fingers and toes bleed a lot in humans.

I'd have him assessed by another vet--try the breeder's vet, if it's practical to do so.

While the bleeding itself isn't likely to be cause for serious alarm, the reason your OES is bleeding/wearing down nails IS a cause to be concerned. Is it just one toe? Could be that he caught one nail wrong and tore it a bit--which means this would be a one-time thing. Or if his nails are just brittle, maybe there's something not right, diet or health wise. But you should get a better assessment.
I am going to get another opinion from another vet. Yesterday did not sit well with me. I have been going to that vet for more ten years but now I am concerned. Anyway, she feels he is wearing his nails down this one nail to the quick, and possible more will do that. He has not had them clipped. I am concerned what is causing this - if that is it. his hips are fine. we do walk on concrete. his day care center (he goes twice a week for a few hourst) has gravel in the yard. He is not in pain at all. Has anyone of your dogs worn their nails down to the quick?
My 12-year-old German Shepherd has developed the same problem. He had knee surgery several years ago on both knees and he doesn't plant his (rear) feet quite the way he used to. There is occasional scraping. I have always kept his claws short, but now don't even need to trim the middle claws of his back feet, due to the wear pattern. We take long walks several times a day (a lot of street walking). Yesterday and today I noticed that one nail was ground down to the quick (I imagine that's painful) and bleeding. Styptic powder would not be the answer in this case, beyond stopping the bleeding at each incident. I'm considering trying a soft claw cap. I agree that it sounds as if you might want to consult another vet. Tranquilizers? Strange Rx.
Oops, just re-read your post: tranquilizers were not mentioned at all -- where did I get that, haha?! In any case, putting your dog outside certainly isn't the answer, as our dogs want to be with us. Still think a soft nail cap might be a solution.
Tranquilizers were used and I wondered about that too!

You need to find out why his nail wore down do much;.
Possible causes:
trauma - running around playing
gait problem - unusual wearing
nail disease - fungal infection

If more than one nail becomes affected then there is a rare autoimmune disease that effects dogs nails. It causes the nails to grow mishaped and they can split, wear strangely and get nail bed infections. Most unlikely that it would be this but I'd want to know what it is so I could do something about it.
I would have the vet check into bleeding disorders too actually... this happened to my parents dog several years ago and it turned out to be the first symptom of auto immune hemolytic anemia.
Since this is a "nail" thread I would like to ask if anyone's OES ever chewed their nails! Bailee actually chews his dew claws, not all the way down, but he does chew off the ends. He doesn't really chew any of the other nails just the dew claws. As far as the nails wearing down we walk 4 to 5 miles a day on asphalt and concrete and Bailee's nails get worn somewhat but no-where near to the extent your guy does.
Never had a nail problem but i did have 2 sheepies to split on of their paw pads and it bleed something terrible. Vet told me that to keep washing it in something like dial anti-bacterial soap and keep a sock or something on it when they went outside. I took about 2 weeks to completely heal. I now use that paw pad cream to help prevent cracking
I would definately get another opinion and stop seeing that Vet. His/her responses are actually deplorable :x And I would let them know my unhappiness...

I have no answers other than to see I hope it isn't anything serious. Poor baby...
The one time we put Bennett in a dog kennel, he tried to escape by "digging" his way out. On concrete. He wore the nails down to the quick and was on steroids and antibiotics for a month.

Soft Paws glue would be very painful, if he has indeed gotten down to the quick.

And I agree with you on the new vet.
