Ritha--
My Heart is doing the same thing...digging, digging, digging..she is 6 months old. She comes in with her paws and her face covered in thick dirt, mud ..it's disgusting and I have tried everything you mentioned..... I try to watch her when she is out and she is a perfect lady...the first time I turn my back..she is running through the house filthy WHAT'S A MOTHER TO DO?????? (maybe we both will get some good advice...thanks for posting this....) |
Morgan loves to dig!!! I fence off most of the areas he likes to dig in - others I have covered with pavers. Actually winter is the only time I can relax, with all that snow and frozen ground I am less likely to walk into a cavern!
I have been told the only way to break it is to give them a place to dig and bury treats etc in that one place. I haven't tried it - mainly because I haven't been able to convince my husband that the dog needs a sand box in the back yard |
Kerry you are totally right. They are dogs, there are so many reasons for them to dig. Teaching them to dig in one particular area in the yard will make all of your lives easier.
For the wholes, you can put lava rocks in them - it doesn't feel good on their nails when they get to it - and carry on putting her poos in the wholes. When you see her dig, tell her "No digging" and take her to her digging corner and reinforce digging there - you can start digging, she will help you in no time. You can make a little sand pit for her but with dirt in it. Make sure to praise her when she digs in her digging spot. Also, between 5-9 months they have selective hearing, they become teenagers. Stay consistent with her! |
All good suggestions........and they work........somewhat. Generally they outgrow this but in the mean time expect the yard to take a hit. I know one sheepie mom who tried planting her garden in barrels and buckets....sheepie loved the new challenge. Marion had a dirty beard and paws for the first 3 years of her life. She couldn't stay out of the dirt. In time they stop. Also this is energy related. They need their mind and body exercised.......time for games away from home on walks.......long walks. Tired sheepies are less destructive....less, not totally nondestructive. |

Good point - they do seem to relandscape the back yard more when I am away for a few days or too busy to give them extra exercise. |
