Toby: New OES from the Pound

Our new OES we picked up form the County shelter is settling in after three days, finally. We have renamed him Toby (see "pair bond" thread in the Behavior list).

Apparently Toby has had an eventful short life. Fell off a two story deck at 15 weeks and fractured his femur so bad he is left with three steel pins in his left leg (seems to move OK, though). Then given to the County shelter by his owners where he spent two weeks and was neutered for his trouble.

My wife and I adopted him Friday. He had a rough first day getting acquainted with our 3 year old male, Charlie. Charlie got three tooth punctures and a torn dewclaw the first day and believe me, I had some doubts... Toby was so clinging and demanding of our attention at first, that Charlie got completely fed up with with the interloper until he learned that his deeper woof was enough to reinstate his temporarily threatened authority. With peace reestablished, both dogs are now settling into the new order-- and are sleeping peacefully next to each other on my wife's $7000 Royal Hereke carpet she bought in Turkey last summer. Not sure that is exactly what we wanted but at least it's progress...

Will add a picture when they are posted.

Thank you for having such a big heart and taking in a rescue dog. Wish there were more people like yourself. Glad to hear he has adjusted. Enjoy the fun of having two sheepies. We do :D :D :D

Adorable! Congrats on your new sheepie - what a wonderful home and new brother he has now. I bet he thinks you bought the rug from Turkey just for him.
Ooooh... he's wonderful.
And so are you and your wife for saving him. :D

Thanks so much for sharing the pictures.

Foothills of the the Sierra Nevada, between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Been in the same house for about 17 years on about 1/3 acre. There is a path worn around the back yard from 7 sheepdogs who have patrolled the fence over the years counting the elderly pair we had when we moved in. Since there have usually been two with us at any one time, I think that some of the neighbors believe that they are the same, VERY long-lived dogs.
Toby looks very comfortable sleeping. Seems like he is going to adjust to your family well. It brings tears to my eyes to see such a beautiful sheepie given another chance to have a real family. Best wishes for you all!
Toby developed kennel cough last night, a deep honking cough with mucus-- and he has an ear infection. A hazard of getting a dog from the pound. He's going to the vet this morning along with Charlie to have his torn dewclaw looked at. You can see the bandage on Charlie's foot.

I would recommend anyone getting a dog from a shelter who has another dog at home get the resident dog vaccinated for kennel cough 4 days to a week ahead of the arrival of the new animal if possible.

Thanks for all of the kind words. I suspect that 90% of the people on his forum would have done the same if you ran across an OES in the local shelter. It's happened to me on two occasions now.

That kennel cough can be a pain, but at least it isn't as bad as some other things he could have brought home and passed on.

I hope Toby gets feeling better with some drugs, and that Charlie doesn't get it too.
Wow, Toby is a looker! He is really a gorgeous dog, him and Charlie make a very handsome pair!

Good luck with everything and thanks for saving Toby!
Congratulations on your new buddy.
But I think you may have made a mistake with the name. If he's anything like my Toby, you might be in trouble!!!

Congrats on your new addition! :D

Kennel cough is a pain to be sure. Hope the meds kick in and he's better soon. :)
Congrats on your rescue of handsome new boy Toby, good luck on getting rid of that nasty kennel cough, the Vet will fix him right up

Peter.
