ive been having problems with grooming alfie since we got him 8 months ago... bascially he hates getting brushed, and its a constant battle to get it done.. The problem is (not sure if this is a common problem?) that where his coat changes from puppy coat to adult coat, there seems to be knots, and pretty bad ones at that.. The extent of the problem is such that i feel now the only way forward it to get him cut very short to get rid of the mattes.. My plan was to wait till spring, cut him short, brush him every single day and hopefully by the time his hair was long again he'd be cool with grooming.. I dont think it can wait till spring now, because i dont want him ending up with skin problems... My question is this... can we get alfie cut short just now, or should his coat be long for the winter? Thanks guys |

Go ahead and cut him short. Just monitor his time outside and if he's cold, put a sweatshirt or sweater on him. When Carl gets cold he wears a boy's large sweatshirt with a little v cut into the neck. |
Absolutely don't wait. You can wind up with all inds of skin problems under the matts. |
Thanks guys, i'll look into it...
i definitely dont wanna put a jacket on him, they look terrible haha is this a common thing from puppy to adulthood? |
Absolutely a common thing during the coat change!!
I think that most of the dog jackets look goofy and that's why I use the little kid's sweatshirt. He looks like one of those guys that walks around the gym asking other people if they need a spot. |
When Sami was going through her coat change I also hurt my arm and the kids took her swimming SO i shaved she looked funny for a day then you get use to it, but you get to see those wonderful eyes. I also got a better brush THAT does make a difference she lets me brush her all the time now and If Blue is being a bug I have bones for them to chew on they like that better then each other. |
Also the mats HURT your pup. MO lets us know....loudly.....when a mat is pulling. It's usually in the "arm pit" region and for MO may be nothing more than a tangle of a few hairs. It surprises them when they go to jump.
So trim down your boy, he'll be fine. The hair grows back quickly. As it grows back teach him how much fun grooming can be by starting with a soft brush, not a pin. |

I don't remember which Charlie Brown special it was, but anytime someone says to cut/alter a sweatshirt for their dog I think of Snoopy making his "Flashdance" outfit |
ok thanks guys, im going to get it done
by the way, how long does an oes grow for? i havent noticed much of a change in alfie height wise for a while now, but seems to be filling out a little |
They continue to grow and change until they're between 18 mos - 2 years of age. |
