Choosing a puppy long-distance...

Hello everyone. We are at or near the top of a waiting list for a litter of puppies that was just born. The breeder has indicated that we must choose our puppy sooner rather than later....like within a couple of weeks of birth. Any tips for how to select one? We will have access to photos and some limited video.

On a related subject, we would like our OES to be on the smaller side. Is the size of the puppy relative to the others a good indicator of size when it is full grown or is it just going to be total chance? Thanks in advance.

This might be of some help!

There are links on the page where you can buy the book, and also some other interesting/questionable puppy training product links. Feel free to look around, but be sure to take them with a chuckle and a grain of salt! HERE (this forum) is a good place to find reliable info and reliable books, such as these links:

Good luck, and ENJOY your puppy experience!
Congratulations on your soon to be new addition! Well, we had to chose a puppy long distance too. I pretty much told the breeder what I wanted so she would recommend a little guy for us, but at the end is really chance pick. At such a young age, its difficult to guess size, I think. However, personality wize, you can ask the breeder to let you know which one is more or less agressive, which one seems to be more playful, etc. Goodluck and keep us posted on your desicion. Oh, and pictures are always a good thing on this forum! If you post them here (with breeder's permission) we can give you our opinions on the puppies! LOL
Will the markings stay the same? I.e. will an all-white face puppy be an all-white face adult? And will a black right ear stay a black right ear later on?
Hi Mojo, The OES changes color as it matures the black turns to gray most of the time.

True! But they don't move around and change locations. So a dark ear will be a dark ear later on.

Nose/eyeliner pigmentation can fill in though.
Congratulation on your breed choice!

We got Lennon over the internet, the breeder was kind enough to answer our questions and sent us the puppy we requested both in personality and markings... However, it's a good idea to ask around about the reputation and do your homework on behaviour (sp?) to avoid nasty surprises.

My wife was afraid of dogs, so I requested the most shy pup from the litter to help my wife overcome her fears, just to realize a few months later that pups that are shy tend to be very dominant but are repressed by the other pups, their dominant personality rises when they live alone with thir forever family... 8O we ended up with a wonderful Alpha male that was quite a challenge to educate, but who we love anyway.

Whatever your choice, we wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted and don't forget pictures of you new family memeber once he or she arrives!
You can never tell for sure what personality is going to be like in any given pup, and they can vary greatly even within the same litter. I'd say by about 8 weeks you might have an idea of what the pup's personality is like at the time, but it will change depending on how it is raised as well.
For example, my pup Sky was a bit of a whiner and earned the nickname princess by the time she was 3 weeks old because she was demanding of attention and very pushy when it came to "hey pay attention to me first!" and she was loud! Another pup, named Maddie, was quiet, large, reserved when it came to human attention, not shy really, but didn't go out of her way to get it. Now they are totally reversed. Sky is quiet, and laid back, and very affectionate, while Maddie, as her owner describes her, is currently a little hellion! LOL
Sky was also the second smallest pup, and is now one of the largest. If it is not possible for you to pick the pup later, I guess you'll just have to get what you get. The breeder may have an idea at only a few weeks, but they can and often do, change.
Out of my girl's litter there wasn't a pup that i wouldn't have loved to have, they were all wonderful, and Sky wasn't even my first choice, but now that she's here i can't imagine not having her.
