Chew Toy Help

Kayla loves to chew on her toys and can spend hours gnawing on a rawhide bone...My question is that is too much chewing bad for her?...I went to a local Sheepdog rescue for something unrelated and mentioned this too her, and she said it was fine...She has never chewed anything but her toys, paper, and one Christmas decoration so that is a good thing...However I just wanted to make if any of you had any opinions on this and what types of bones you would recomend....I wish I knew the name of what I giver her but they are light , bone colored rawhide bones that are rolled up and about five inches long...I get them from Petco in there pet bar section (where you buy by the pound)...We tried Bully sticks which she likes, but they do smell...Also we bought her two Nyla Bones but she works through those in about 15 minutes...Any reccomendation that would be healthy for her and long lasting would be great.

Thank You,

Jay

I would heistate to use rawhide because they soften as they are chewed and then can be eaten in large hunks, which can become lodged in the digestive system. You need to constantly supervise your dog with a rawhide chew.

Nylabone makes a version for "tough chewers" called "durable". They are extreeeemley hard.

Are those the ones you tried?
neither of my dogs would chew nylabones - but they would gnaw down on the edible ones. they will chew on a knog if there is peanut butter or cheese inside
Kongs are great for "chewers".

I try to avoid rawhide, sometimes using comperessed rahide as a treat, because it can cause intestinal obstructions.
Rawhides and Oliver do not get along. He ate one at a neighbors house one afternoon, then came home that evening and threw it up along with his food. I was so thankful he threw it up.

Oliver does not get rawhides, EVER, anymore.
I have never given Obe anything rawhide because I heard it was not good for the digestive system. I will buy him the bully sticks but they only last 30 minutes to an hour. (they do smell). I have bought him the big cow knuckles from the butcher/grocery store before and he goes crazy over it. They do last for a long time at least with him. I always supervise him when he is chewing on bones, toys, etc.
I used to give Lumpi my lab/greyhound rawhide...until one day I saw it stuck in his throat. He could breath, drink, eat, he wasn't choking so I waited. After an hour the rawhide was still in his throat. I grabbed his head and pulled the rawhide out of his mouth. It was gross.

This made me wonder what rawhide does in his stomach so I put one in a bowl of water (added some lemon juice too) and waited. After three days soaking in the water, nothing happened to the rawhide - it only got a little softer!!! 8O I immediately throw the bag out and since then I buy them marrow bones. I buy about 20 of them about 5 inches long for $6! They are cheap, natural, healthy and they chew it for at least an hour.

(I uploaded a picture of the boys chewing marrow bones, will post it when Ron let's me. )
We also don't let Walter have rawhides, he is extremely protective of them and he swallows them whole. We give him nylabones now (the one all the way to the right in Ron's picture) and he loves them. They last for a while and they come in 'flavor's so dogs usually like them!

Looks like nothing is safe for my dogs to chew on. I might just offer my foot...
Thanks Ron for my pictures!:D Here are my boys chewing on their marrow bones.
