One more thing, it's Cushings Disease P.D.H. Apparently there are a different kinds.
Go to Wikipedia on the internet. Explains everything. So sad for the Lab. :(
She's combed the internet. She was hoping for some advice from people with experience. You never know, someone could suggest diet changes, etc.
There are support groups out there that I am sure can give you some more specific advice if you are not finding adequate info on the web.

Like Yahoo http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=cushings

You might want to look at other breed lists/forums that cushings is more common like some Terrier breeds like Scotties, toy poodles, German Shepards, Dachshunds, Boxers and some others.

Some other dog breed lists can be found here which you would have to join to pose your question.

There are 2 kinds of cushings: there is PDH and there is HAC.
Cushings is a common illness seen in dogs and rarely seen incats. The term cushings is applied to any disease state that results in hypersecretion of cortisol. The excessive secretion usually is from excessive secretion of cortisol from the pituitary gland or an adrenal tumor. PDH is seen most commonly in dogs under 20kg like poodles, dachshunds, terriers, beagles and german shephards but any breed can really be affected. Abnormal cells within the pituitary gland secrete excessive amounts of SCTH; this results in hyperplasia of the adrenal gland, which is then followed by oversecretion of cortisol. If there is a tumor present on the adrenal gland, the tumor is what secretes the excessive cortisol.
Treatment would be to have the affected adrenal gland removed, it is a very difficult surgery that carries many risks and needs lots of followup care. This is a serious disease and animals will need lifelong treatment. diet changes will not affect the disease.
Drugs that can help with the medical treatment are Mitotane(Lysodren), ANipryl (l-Deprenyl). Treatment with mitotane has shown a survival time for dogs of 1.7 year and longer.
