How Are Such Large Dogs So Agile?

Kayla never ceases to amaze me with her speed and agility for such a large dog...She will from time to time casually pull up a seat at our dining room table...Last Sunday morning I was attempting to get her down, when on her own she basically did a hand stand and spun around before her back legs even touched the ground in a space that I would never have thought she could have gotten out of on her own....Also her speed is incredible...We will be out in the yard playing and she will go into full speed laps of the back yard and make sharp cuts, change direction...I mad a post yesterday that she had gotten into some flowers that were left on the fireplace mantel...We figured she had used a plastic container that was left out with our haloween decorations...We were wrong...This morning I heard the sound of a plate or dish coming from the living room, I go out there and Kayla is finisning off the remaining candy corn that was in a dish on the fireplace mantel...There are two small bookcases on either side of the fireplace and she was perched up on one of those to get to what she wanted...I could not believe she was able to get up that high let alone balance on a surface that has to be smaller than a foot squared and about 3 feet tall...I always worry about her safety, but she has a way of getting in and out of the things on her own for now...We now for the time being have moved the bookcases to keep her down, but I have a feeling she will find a new way up there in time.

When there is food involved a sheepie can get ANYWHERE
They are amazingly agile!!!
Our Pearl does what we have named...............

THE PEARL TWIRL

(A 190 degree turn with her back legs in one position.....(it seems....)
Any dog that smart will probably discover bringing in a chair and climbing on that!...and then return it to its original spot!
 You've got a smart one there.

There are many time I thought my dogs would crash into a fence running full speed in the backyard. But they turn on a dime. It's amazing to watch.
Wow, a climber!

That's a scary thought.
Can I change the title to SOME dogs? Poor Barney doesn't have an agile bone in his body
If Nigel turns too sharp he rolls...is that a puppy thing ya think.
I think we have a candidate for the uncoordinated here.

Picture the hose reel, sitting in the middle of the yard, alone in the yard - 30 feet from any object or building. (run out to water the garden during the drought this summer). Then picture happy Chewie, running in the yard, playing around, just having a good time.

Yep - he ran into the hose reel, while running full speed, looking to the side! Hose reel goes flying one way, (empty, as the hose was being used) and Chewie tumbling the other way. Saying to husband who is shaking his head in amazement: "umm, I guess he needs his ponytail fixed."

Picture cute Chewie, take a nice little trip to have his eyes checked... :D

His peripheral vision should be better than that. He doesn't have that much head coat, does he?

Yes he does have that much hair. He was running with his head angled, in a (useless) attempt to get the hair out of his eyes as he was running!
I had thought about fixing the ponytail earlier, but we were busy doing stuff outside. My bad. :(

Here's a trick from Aunt Amy (I was complaining about Macy) that might help too: she thinks after a certain point their muzzle hair starts to get long and thick enough to fly up as they run and impedes their vision, so she suggested I tie that in little pony tails like you do when you need to keep it clean.

Looks stupid. Does help, though.

We don't have wood anymore, we have blockwalls so if one of them hit that at full speed it could be very very bad. 8O But so far it hasn't happened.
Agile? That must come later in life. :)

Milton trips on the stairs and goes butt over tea-kettle when he get's running to fast and tries to stop really quickly.

He can jump like the wind blows, I'll give him that.

Agile though? Ah, not so much. Haha
My Phoebe has slo-mo. She looks a little like Eyeore sometimes the way she walks. And clumsy! She bangs her head on the doorway at least once a day (looking behind while she's walking).
And then out of the blue comes this speed and agility that takes everyone by surprise.
Once she was lying in the family room and heard my son coming in. In one swoop, she cleared the coffee table and landed at least three feet away from it on a dead run to the kitchen door.
Another time, she started to run after a dog and stopped when we called her. She realized she was in the back lane which is a cardinal sin in her world (leaving the property without a person in attendance was one of her "quirks" when we got her). At a loss as to how to get back in without passing right by me, she jumped from a sitting position and cleared the back fence.
So, in short, never judge a sheepie by the cover
I don't understand...
Rheba is very agile when it comes to doing laps around the yard and jumping onto the patio (so she doesn't run into the table or pillars) but we had an accident.
Rheba was playing with my 3 yr old nieces. They loved seeing her run and act wild. Rheba lost control while running towards one of the girls and forgot how to turn. My niece and Rheba had a head on collision. My nieces lip was slightly cut and bleeding because it hit the top of Rheba's head. Rheba proceeded to run off and play while my niece screamed! Poor baby!
Did you check poor Rheba's head? lol, just kidding. But I know that move well! Barney not so much, but Maggie would run STRAIGHT at you and it was only a guess as to whether she would stop, make a turn or slam right into you. I think it's a classic sheepie move.

I hope your niece was okay, though...
