Gus had a wonderful holiday weekend, and played outside a lot with his cousin Nilla (a golden retreiver), and slept in the "bunk house" which is often closed up, and is therefore a little musty and dusty. It triggers my allergies to sleep out there, so I feel this could be allergies... but anyway... Gus has, since Sunday night, sounded snotty, has a clear runny nose (maybe a little cloudy, but not green or yellow), is sneezing a lot, and the skin around his eyes looks a little red and irritated. He's not coughing, and his eyes aren't goobing any more than usual (he naturally has a lot of eye boogies). He is eating just fine, and might be a little calmer than usual, but is still playing and barking and acting normal. I just tried giving him some benedryl, so I'll see if that works- but until his snot turns green or yellow, should I worry? The vet has said just watch him, but I'm a worrier so knowing if other sheepies get runny noses will make me feel better. How long do they last? Poor baby Gus |

It could even just be allergies. One thing though, be careful with Benedryl and dosing on a puppy. I'm assuming since you talked to the vet, he advised you on a safe dosage? |

Yes, I spoke with the vet, and based on Gus's weight (50 lbs, weighed on Monday) he is allowed 25 mg, 3 times a day. I had given him the larger 1/2 of a tablet last night, and he had no reaction, so I feel he will be okay with the full tablet. I just hate when he's sick! |
Don't be alarmed, but when Oliver had a runny nose and was sneezing more than normal, he had a bacterial AND viral infection. It wasn't bad, but he did need some medicine to clear it up.
It could just be allergies though. |
Good to know that we should continue to watch him. Due to the fact he's acting so normal, and there's no color to his snot, the vet doesnt' seem to think it's anything bad yet. At this point, he certainly isn't worse, and we're going to give the benedryl a try today. If he's not feeling better by tomorrow after work we'll take him in I think. Unfortunately we have to go out of town so he will be with Grandma and Grandpa over the weekend, so I hope he's feeling better by then! I'm glad to hear what other dogs have had though! |
I remember when Shane just wasn't himself. When he dragged himself on a walk instead of his normal whopeee, we took him to the vet and got the "cold" diagnosis. Keep him quiet, warm and hopefully that's all it is. |
Mine have had occassional runny noses and a sporadic sneeze or two. Never been anything to worry about.
Gus is lucky to have such a caring Mom! Give him a big |
Thanks for everyone's replies! Gus's runny nose turned green yesterday, so we took him in and the Vet put him on some antibiotics. He's wasn't too pleased having his temperature taken, but he seems to love the vet- what a dork!
Thank goodness his nose will clear up soon... Sheepies aren't good at blowing their noses Thanks again! |
Poo Gus, hope he feels better fast! |
Hope you are feeling better Gus! You are lucky you have such a caring and loving Mommy. |

Thanks again! Considering how much mess they just make with the wet beards, I don't even want to think about what a snotty nose could do! |
eeeewwwwuuuu......the cold wet beard is bad enough, but green snot! I think not. |
