If fences aren't an option?

Hi guys,

As we're getting ready to rent a new home, I was wondering if a fenced yard is a 100% must have for shepies? Most of the places we are looking at are townhomes, which, in our area, don't normally have fenced in yards.

Now, we're really not planning to let the pupper outside, except for potty breaks, and if we are outside to play, or do yard work.

Does anyone not have a fenced in yard? If so, how do you keep you dog at home? I would think a tie down would be too flimsy for a big dog like that...

I appreciate any info anyone has!

Karen :)

I would also like to hear the responses to this because I too will probably won't have a fenced in yard.
With my first sheepie a fenced yard didn't make a difference, she climbed in ten seconds flat. With Dancer and Sky for a long time I had no fencing and not much of a yard, but never left them out without me. I take them out to pee on leashes, and play with them offleash but I am ALWAYS with them. My yard here is mostly fenced and secure, but I still wouldn't leave them unattended, I'd be afraid of them getting stolen or hurt, or managing to get away. They're my kids, four legged to be sure, but still my babies.
Thanks Willowsprite! Did you have any problems with your breeder being concerned about the lack of fencing available when you first got your sheepie?

A four foot fence is nothing for Puddy either. First day we had him I put him in the fence (not attached to the house) and went to the front porch to let him do his "business". I heard him rattling the fence/gate and thought he was trying to open the gate. I went straight in the house to get his leash and on my way back out the front door he met me. Figured out from then on that a fence was no match for him. I say the fence, he is either a gate opener AND closer or a climber, my guess is climber.

We use a 30' runner with 15' leash to let him get some outside time. The runner itself is elevator cable and the leash is coated heavy gauge aircraft cable. The pet store owner told me that if he ever broke the leash he would replace it for free (unless I was tying out an elephant).

I know this may not be an answer for everyone.

No, but we are friends and she knows me well enough to know that I won't leave them unattended. I believe it is one of the many questions she asks people interested in a pup though.
we are not allowed to have fences in our neighborhood (except for stacey king, from the chicago bulls, he lives down the street and he has a fence for his rottweiler... how fair is that???)
but anyway we have a pretty big backyard for walter to play in but we dont have any physical or electric fence. it wasnt until he turned 1 that i really trusted him off leash... now id say 97% of the time he doesnt leave the property, and for exercise we run around the house and he always stays in our yard. hes very very good about it EXCEPT when he sees a rabbit or deer, in which it takes me yelling in my meanest voice 'walter stay'!
sometimes i even leave him outside by himself if im in the sunroom or kitchen where i can see him.

so in conclusion i think if you teach your dog the boundaries and they know stay and come then a fence is not necessary.
