Please Don't Drink and Drive this Holiday Season (or ever)

I'm usually not one for "PUBLIC SERVICE" announcements but after the last couple weeks I've had, I wanted to remind everyone that the Holiday Season is upon us and the temptation to drink and drive can be overwhelming.

In the last few weeks I've been unlucky enough to have to respond to an unusually high number of Motor Vehicle Accidents. Some very gruesome and many involving alcohol.

I am amazed at the number of people out there who still drink and drive, you would think in this day and age no one would but the "it can't happen to me" mentality is still out there.

So please EVERYBODY, stay safe this Holiday season and take a DD or a Taxi.

Welcome to the world of Emergency Medical Services!! You'll be bitter and cranky like the rest of us in no time!!

Seriously people. If you don't care about yourself care about the other people on the road. Drunks tend to be the ones who aren't hurt at the accidents that they cause. The people that they hit tend to not survice the accident. Ironic, isn't it?
One of the worst crashes I ever went to was on Christmas eve and involved multiple families in several vehicles. The driver that caused the accident had had 1 drink but was really tired. So remember, what you might normally be able to "handle" is different when your body is tired or stressed.

Be careful out there people!!!
And remember, it's better to be late to dinner than to not make it at all!!
Speaking as someone whose life was forever changed by a drunk driver, please heed the warnings. Don't drink & drive.
I remember a horrific incident in the Philly area on I95 a couple of Christmases ago where some guy was out partying all night, cut across a median and hit a van head on Christmas morning. A whole family was instantly killed except for like a 10 y.o. girl. They showed helicopter footage of the wreckage on the news and presents were strewn everywhere. I will never forget seeing that sight, and feeling so remorseful for the family who obviously were on a journey to have a wonderful celebration.

On the other side of the coin, my only sister, who's a binge drinker, just did jail time this summer for her 3rd DUI. She's 37, got her first about the age of 19, second around age 30 and the last one in June. I haven't talked to her at all, and really don't know what I would say to her at this point. I was actually glad that she did jail time which I hope finally straightens her up. I think a lot of alcoholics have this attitude like "it won't happen to me" and are totally in denial about their behavior. I am all for no tolerance laws, and I hope technology continues to improve with those devices they put into cars that won't let them start if you are intoxicated. Taking a license away doesn't stop someone from getting behind the wheel.
I cannot believe how harsh I have become recently but I support zero tolerance . Drinking and Driving should be MANDATORY JAIL time. No one who gets a DWI should ever drive a car again.

I think that's pretty fair. It is just not that hard to not drink and drive. I can't believe people who know that they don't have a ride can't control themselves for one evening and just abstain from having a few drinks. Admittedly, having a couple with friends is fun but, geez, you can have fun without getting hammered. (Well, in most situations at least but you catch my drift!)
no one has to worry about me....my super nose and lack of taste buds has made diet gingerale my new favorite

While there's a thread: I want people to stop chatting and driving while on their cell. Every time I come close to an accident, the idiot is on the cell. Every. Single. Time. People of all ages and genders. Get a bluetooth thingy if you can't live off it, and I don't believe a single person (and I realize most everyone probably uses their cell while driving) who says they drive the same while on or off the phone.

Unfortunately, most studies show the hands free sets to be no safer while driving than a hand held phone. Wearing a Bluetooth also increases your chance of injury from a butt-kicking for looking like an idiot walking around talking to no one.
Thanks for the reminder Ginny. It's just such a tragic waste to lose people over something that is so easily prevented.

And I'm with you Jo. Some of the worst drivers on the road are on their cell phones - and in the Chicago metro area, with so many cars out there, it is easy to clip someone if you get distracted.

Everybody be safe.

I have no idea how to work anything. I'm so behind on things .......which is why we don't own one.

In Boston we've started a campaign called "Yellowtooth" that aims to pair up homeless people who talk to themselves.

It is a humanitarian thing.

I love that idea!

A few months ago we were somewhere and someone had some kind of hands free setup but it wasn't Bluetooth-- it looked more like headphones. James said it looked like a poor person version of Bluetooth so he dubbed it "Browntooth." I still giggle when I think about Browntooth.

Yes, I agree. I am so different from my sister, that I can't relate to the binge drinking at all. When she's gotten the DUI's, she has made excuses for them like "that person was drunker than I so I had to drive", "I was only a couple of blocks from my house", "I had to take this person to their car", etc. I, unfortunately, heard these excuses second party. I don't cut my sister any slack.

It's one thing to make a bad decision in life that you will pay for (hopefully not at the expense of harming others), but to make the same bad choices over and over is just plain stupid and deserves harsh consequences.
When I was young my partent told us that they would probably forgive their children for almost anything. You stole because you were hunger, you killed to save your life. But they told us that they would never forgive us for a DUI. Although our family has not been hit by a drunk driver, we all know someone who's life will never be whole again.

Maybe soon they will understand.
I am such a mean wife. Hubby will not drink and drive ever. Even if he has only had one beer. He had two DUI's when he was young and learned his lesson. Mind you both times he was just over the legal limit.

Friday he asked me to go to the store on the next street. I told him... "When I said I wasn't going out at all on Black Friday, I meant it!

So I went to take a nap.
When I woke up I found out that he walked to the store. He didn't want to walk all the way around the block so he went over the back wall.

He went on to tell me about struggling to get over the wall. I said, "Oh well, you should of thought of it last night and I would have stopped at the store for you."

Needless to say, I am always the designated driver.
^^^^

So am I :( ..............in fact, i went to the store today to stock up on beer. Big belly and all, which always makes it fun to see who all is looking at you. Mr. J can't wait for a drink but definitely no driving! It'll be awhile before he can get used to having ONE beer w/o being tipsy.
LOL, I had to do beer shopping when I was preggars too.
There is always at least one person who thinks the beer is for you.
I had always been tempted to look at that person and say," Yes it is for me, and NO I am not pregnant, this is my beer belly, impressive huh?"

Never did get to use that, but feel free to use it the next time you get looks.

Interestingly, I take the opposite approach. :D

LMAO!
That one got me this morning!

On the serious note - I totally agree with the no drinking and driving - EVER! That is one lesson my kids picked up on early - must be all the true stories I brought home from work about my patients and what happened to them when out drinking and driving. 8O All teens should have parents who are in the EMT/Trauma fields - they grow up learning about the stupid things people do while under the influence.
My parents always had the rule of Please call and we'll come and get you anywhere, anytime. And there were several times I called them at like 2 in the morning for a ride (over a several years period)...I think the last time I was like 23!! Seems a little old to be calling mom for a ride home  (But cheaper than a cab!)
okay also just to remind you all this......

Patrick my stepson got ''pulled'' over a month ago for drunk bike riding ....yup, he was wobbly on his bike..he was on a side walk, not a street and the cop stopped him and gave him the option of A. taking him to jail or B. loading up his bike and calling an ambulance to take him to the hospital...he chose option B. which is better than jail, however, when brian found out he was pretty miffed that the cop wasted ambo time for that instead of taking patrick himself (nothing like riding in the back of a cop car)..

so now patrick has to pay off his ambo ride and an er visit....of course we only found out by way of an insurance bill.....
