Heart-worm
Should it be given year around? If not when are the best start and stop days? (after the first good frost?) mind you I am in the midwest so weather patterns are sporadic. |

| I give it year round because the heartworm meds also keep other worms away. My guys go out a lot and spend time at day care so you never know that they can pick up. It's just easier. Worms suck. |
| I give it year round now too. Better to keep the kids safe at all times. Perhaps the buggers lie dormant for awhile before growing so best be fighting all winter. Also my vet insists on blood testing every spring if we haven't been on Heartgard continually. Otherwise it's every other year for tests. |

| Our pups use to get the whole gambit of testing come spring as well. Chewy has never been off of it. What got me thinking is I am on the last one this month. I am probably going to keep him on it all year as well.

Ya I agree I hate dealing with worms in general our boys use to get them from time to time, not really what you want to find when your dog gets up from watching a movie with the family (and yes they watched tv lol) I did not know that heart worm meds kept other worms away?! thats even more reason to keep him on it. Do you have anymore info on that? it would make for some good reading. (well not so much given its info about worms  but still....) |
| I give it year round as well. Tasker has never had a fecal test that came back positive for other types of worms so I guess it works . |
| Bear is a worm magnet. I have no idea why, he just is. If I miss one month, he picks up a parasite. The threat of him (and us) going through that keeps me on top of heartworm meds. |
| Worms are one thing that REALLY gross me out. As a nurse and an EMT I've seen my share of disgusting things but there is something about worms hanging out a dogs butt that just does me in. |
| I'm with you, Ginny. Seeing a worm crawl out of a cat's butt one time made me gag so badly I nearly lost my lunch. I stay on top of worm meds for the same reason. I give HW pills year round, too. If I'm not mistaken, the treatment includes hookworms and round worms, too. |

LOL - that happened to my husband too! He tells me "the cat has worms!", get Tipup in to the vet! And this is from a tough guy who hunts and does all sorts of gross stuff. |
| we are mostly on all year - we do get forgetful from time to time though. I have seen mosquitos in the house in upstate NY at some very odd times of the year. |
| I give year around. We travel sometimes and not always sure where we are going to be (part of country). Just figure it is better to be safe than sorry. He also gets annual check ups with shots. |
