This is a beautiful dog. Will post photo asaa. Poor senior being cast aside. I'm Patrick Hatcher, and my family and I are missionaries with New Tribes Mission. We've recently finished deputation and have begun to work with the mission. We'll be moving to NTM's Headquarters in Florida on December 4th from our home in Virginia. The apartment we will live in does not allow for pets, so we need to find a home for our well-loved dog Pepper or we'll have to take the painful step to take her to the vet to be put to sleep. We have six kids who have all grown up with Pepper, and we are trying to protect their hearts by finding a home for her. Although we've talked about the possibility of putting Pepper to sleep, we know they could handle this a lot better if we could find a home for her. We are offering her up for free, so there is no cost to acquiring her. Pepper is an Old English Sheepdog mix that we rescued from the pound about 10 years ago. Pepper is house trained and is very good natured around people. She is not an outside dog, and only goes outside on walks and to use the bathroom. She's a little arthritic in one of her back legs. The biggest catch with Pepper is that she cannot be around other animals, ever. We believe this is a result of her time on the street before the pound picked her up. Her "fight" instinct is always on with other animals. Strange as this is, it never exhibited itself with humans. All six of our kids have wrestled and played all over Pepper since they were babies, and she's never been aggressive with them. We love our dog and would like for her to find a loving home where she can live out the rest of her natural life. |
|
oh my.., I, I... I don't know WHAT to think of that... |
What about the commitment to Pepper? I've missed out on a few trips, relocations with work, & delayed or canceled travel plans due to my OES child, & the commitment I made to her. I can't imagine putting my OES to sleep because I wanted to relocate, even if God was calling. Sorry if I sound harsh I'm sure I don't know the whole story. Sincerely.

I agree completely!
Here is the gorgeous Pepper |
I am speechless on this... you rescued the dog, it grew up with your family, but know you want to put it sleep. There is a poem on NEOES rescue site about just this. I think it is titled "How Could You"!! |
Just to make sure everyone is on the same page here, Sue (shelby, corky,&fergus') is not the one giving up this dog; she has merely cross posted this email for us. |
Yeah... Sue tries to find help for pups that will otherwise fall through the cracks. She's found help for many a dog that would have otherwise been killed.

so we need to find a home for our well-loved dog Pepper or we'll have to take the painful step to take her to the vet to be put to sleep. And they're missionaries??? When it comes to surrendering a dog, we need to get past the "whys" and simply understand that a dog is in trouble. Unfortunately, we can't shame people into loving a dog enough to keep him/her forever... even those who claim to be doing God's work. |

Thanks for the experienced advice. |
Yes I read it correctly that Sue is just trying to help and she is not the one giving the dog up. I wish the dog was good with others I would take it. Since it is aggressive towards other animals I can't there is no way. Just blown away by how someone could do that after all those years. I guess it is like the story I mentioned in the earlier post. Heartbreaking though poor guy. |
I really dont understand people who adopt pets and then because they want to move and the apartment doesnt allow pets to just put them to sleep or give them away.
We are in the middle of deciding whether or not to take a job in a different state but we arent sure yet but I have already made sure that I have places available that will take my pets and that our apartment is pet friendly and has a patio and everything. My life revolves around my kids and I think that if they love a pet then they can do a bit of leg work for them. It is really not that difficult to find a place that accepts pets. I just dont understand it and it is so sad. |

It sound like a possible cult to me.
The dog is in radford, Va. I didn't realize that Pepper is on Craigslist. I hate to see pets on there |
I live and Florida and got my baby, Sunny, from a rescue in the Ft Lauderdale area. And the NTM headquarters, according to google is in Leesburg (close to Orlando). I know the OES rescue of florida travels statewide to pick up dogs, Candy and Steve are great!
I think Marie is in Ocala and Candy is in the Ft Lauderdale area. Maybe someone could check with Candy and Steve, their website is http://www.OESRFL.org. I find it difficult to believe that a rental apartment would accept 6 kids and no pets, I am a realtor! |
PEPPER IS MORE URGENT NOW!!!!
I just rec'd email from owner. Pepper shouldn't have to die just because owner is moving! Susan, I'm Patrick Hatcher, Pepper's owner. We are almost out of options. We're still kind of in shock that we haven't found a home for her yet. We only have until Wednesday, or maybe Thursday at the latest before we have to make the worst decision of our lives. She's really a great dog, but she just can't be around other animals. She's been great with our six kids since they were babies. This whole thing is breaking my heart. Thanks. -Patrick |
Hi,
Anyone want to donate to boarding Pepper? The owner agreed to take her to the local vet to board. I am donating, if you wish to help I can supply the vets info when Pepper gets there Thur. He was seriously going to have Pepper PTS Wed or Thur : |
Sue, do you have a PayPal link or something? I can give a little but only if you tell this guy what a total hypocrite a-hole he is once the dog is saved.
This story has really gotten to me since it seems to absolutely heartless. They're "missionaries" spreading God's word but they'll kill something that they consider part of their family? I hate this guy so much, I can't even express it in words. |
Jill,
I have to say I agree with you!!! |
Quote: I hate this guy so much, I can't even express it in words.
It makes me extremely angry when people crow about their religion for everyone to hear and feel they're doing God's work yet fail miserably when it comes to aspects of their own family... be it human or hairy. The world is full of fools and hypocrites. Sadly my sister has become very self-righteous over the past year or so. I feel I've lost her to a religion considered a cult by many. My nephew stayed over for Thanksgiving... before he left I had told him to remember to take care of his dad's dogs when he got home. My sister's fiancée jokingly made a comment about shooting them when I said they weren't always properly cared for. I pointed at him and said, "THAT'S NOT what you say to your future sister-in-law who has 6 dogs." The next thing that came out of his mouth was equally foolish considering my nephew was in the background listening. Yeah... this is really a good way to gain respect. Can you tell I'm struggling with this in my own family? I will donate to help the dog. It is NOT so this fool who's supposed to be spreading His word about kindness, compassion and salvation can do his "work" or to ease his conscience. It's because he's failed in the very basic teaching of caring for God's creatures. |
Jaci,
I agree completely!!!!! Do you want his email addy LOL ? ----------------------------------- Spoke w/ 2 vets that Pepper has been to. Seems she is lovely w/ adults & children. Horrible w/ other dogs. Has typical signs of age (arthritis, some sight & hearing loss) vet states that owner cannot afford arthritis meds) She is 70lbs. shots due this month (I don't get my dogs shots every year) Rabies good for 3 years. She would be a great dog for a senior w/ no other pets' Boarding is approx $17 day. I need advice. I so often think w/ my heart. Opinions please. thx, sue |
shelby, corky,&fergus' wrote: Seems she is lovely w/ adults & children.
I think that says it all.... this girl deserves a home! Perhaps you can start a paypal or see if the vet will take checks/over the phone credit card donations for Pepper's boarding. |
Sue, I'll gladly donate. Send me the info when you get it.
Does anyone know if this jamoke has contacted a rescue? |
I will provide the vet address & phone # as soon as Pepper is taken there (Thur or Fri). Thank you all for wanting to help Pepper.
Hoping a home for her comes along soon. I would like to see her spend her senior years in a loving home. Feel free to cross-post Pepper widely & if anyone has a website pls post there too. Thx! sue |
HI all
I do want to add first Sue is awesome! I am going to be in the Radford area in a couple of weeks If anybody that does not have other animals is interested we can work on a transport I know as a foster home myself, I do not have a place where she would not be with other dogs or cats (as most foster homes are) I really want to help this sweet girl that has loved a family, helped raise the kids and been a family member (she should be able to retire happily) If anybody has any ideas we are open! Thanks for the support in advance to all who are willing to help her Kathy |
I'll help as well. And I would like to offer Saint Patrick a nice tall glass of koolaid....he is certainly no Noah |
Okay
I don't agree with what this guy is doing AT ALL, I have never willingly put one of my dogs down esp for something so trivial as location changes (I have enough problems doing it when the vet says there is no other options - lots of tears) While I don't understand his thinking or mindset, there are at least a dozen other options other than putting the dog to sleep. It does seem rather heartless to me. That being said some people are raised differently than others in regard to there view of animals. Myself I feel they are family but in noway equate to the same value as a human. I would do about anything to help my dogs. I do not understand why it is necessary to insult or criticize his religious beliefs, or those "like him". Just because he feels one way about pets does that mean he feels the same way about people, or what He is doing is any less of God. I in noway wish to cause contention, insult, or digress from the topic. I do not know the whole story on this, but I am just making an observation. |
Bottomline... responsibility and compassion. He appears to lack both and it's foolish in my opinion to tell the entire world he's going to KILL his dog if no one takes her so he can pursue his faith. There is something seriously askew in this proclamation. |

Summed up perfectly, Jaci. |
This makes my blood boil. Just one more hypocrite who does more talking about God, than listening to Him. I would be happy to donate too, so please let me know where to send a check.

6Girls I totally agree with you that this is not responsible or compassionate and I find stating you are going to kill your dog if something is not done repulsive. I just don't see a reason for insults or any criticizing of his religious views or work. And just because he appears to have no companion for his dog, this may be in the way he was raised, that does not mean this is how he feels about other things. Thats all |
No one criticized his religious views or work. The issue is that in teaching "God's way" he would (or should be) be teaching love and compassion however, by putting down a "member of his family" (his words), he isn't practicing what he preaches. |
I agree with "infoseeker"
We don't know the whole story, there is a lot more to it. Please don't insult someones religion if you don't know anything about them. My place in rescue is "Placement Director" and if someone needs to surrender his dog I don't judge or ask questions. I am just thankful that they came to the rescue for help. That is what we are here for, the dogs. |
Quote: I am just thankful that they came to the rescue for help. That is what we are here for, the dogs. Are we to understand that this dog is safely in rescue??? This is NOT what we've been told in this thread so individuals have been offering to pay to keep her safe because the owner wouldn't. Quote: PEPPER IS MORE URGENT NOW!!!! And if a rescue had been contacted, why was this situation even brought up? Please let us know what's actually happening if we don't have the whole story. I think that's only fair to everyone... the owner AND those who have been offering to pay to keep his dog from being PTS. |
This is all I know......
St Patrick isn't answering anyones emails. I understand from Lisa in PA who had had taken on Pepper's cause. that the owner took Pepper to the vet to have her PTS, but the vet refused. I have no idea why St Patrick begged for help for Pepper He is a man of God, BS! No one had heard from him? I can say he is truly evil! This makes me sick! Poor baby the owner whom she loved & trusted wants her dead at all costs! I am SOOOOOOOOOO ANGRY! Thank you all for wanting to help. I bet we never hear from St Pat again.....JERK! |
Im really confused....where is this dog ? At the Vets? With his owners? Is this situation for real or is this maybe a con game (as in an attempt to get money donated that will go to "Patrick", instead of the dog)?????
Id like to help, but NOT if there is the slightest chance of inadvertently putting money in this guys pocket. |
Hi,
No one knows where Pepper is now. She did live in VA w/ her owners. None of the money was to go to the owners, it would have gone directly to Pepper's vet/boarding kennel. I would have set it up myself. I did talk to 2 vets in VA to ask about boarding etc. We may never know what happened to Pepper & her callous owners Many thanks to all who offered to help. |
Quote: I am just thankful that they came to the rescue for help.
I'm still very confused by this statement. It sounds like the owner WAS working with a rescue so the dog should have been safe. If THAT was the case, yes, my opinions were harsh and I apologize because he had plans in place to keep her alive. So the disturbing question how can any of us be thankful he "went to the rescue for help" if the rescue didn't help and no one knows what happened to Pepper? |
I don't think Pepper's owner gave rescue much of a chance
I contacted them on Monday when I received the info on her. Sue has busted her butt trying to help this girl When I contacted Patrick I told him we were all working on it and would love to help the senior gal They expected a miracle since they are missionaries I guess! I am sorry my mom is very religous and when I was telling her about this she was angry! I don't see how you can "preach" God's word if you don't love all creatures! I want to thank all that offered to help Ms Pepper No matter where she is I am sure she will have a little insight that she did have friends wanting to offer her a better life Thank you all so much for your thoughts and offers I hope Pepper is in a safe place Kathy |
Hope this answers your question
No Place Like Home wanted to give Pepper a chance. Patrick (Pepper's owner) has been asking for help for Pepper for a while. When help was offered he at first was grateful & was planning on dropping Pepper off at his vets b/f moving to FL. Then last minute he changed his mind & stopped communicating. Her is a copy of the email Bonnie of No Place Like Home sent to Patrick which remains unanswered. From: No Place Like Home Subject: Pepper Dear Patrick, I am writing on behalf of your dog Pepper. There are a lot of people concerned about Pepper's future as you are. This is a network of responsible animal rescue folks. Boarding is only a temporary situation to buy her some time to find an appropriate foster or permanent home. In the best interest of the dog, no one will want to see her languish or be emotionally tormented/traumatized staying short or long term in a kennel. This option today is the best chance/opportunity for Pepper to find a forever home to live out her natural life. 5 years ago, I myself took in a 9 year old, unneutered male dalmation that was left behind in a pound when his owner moved to Florida. He was miserable being caged, but it was short term. I took him home to foster him and to live with a large number of dogs. He adjusted so easily, almost too easily. The dog who wanted to bite people and other dogs when confined to a kennel, loved life living on a farm and being part of a "family" and a "dog family". Maybe Pepper won't ever want to be around other dogs, but my point is that a week or two of some adjustment is worth her life and chance at a future. If we don't give her a chance, then her life is over and we will never know. I'm sure that the people who gave up my Max (amillion) would have appreciated knowing that he had another wonderful 5 years as a happy dog in a loving home. Please consider this option for Pepper. She still has many good years left to enjoy with a new family. As you found a mission for your family, perhaps it is Pepper's mission at this juncture in her life to enrich the lives of a new family. Sincerely, Bonnie Blanchette There's No Place Like Home Animal Sanctuary (especially on behalf and in memory of my special dog Max) In conclusion Patrick changed his mind & didn't want help anymore (I assume). Let me know if I've confused you more. sue |
Thank you Kathy, you explained it better in fewer words (i always use too many). sue |
Sue and Kathy-
Thank you for the addresses/phone numbers for the vets and for all you two have tried to do. I called both vets this morning and I was told that THEY have not euthanized Pepper yet... it doesn't mean she wasn't taken somewhere else. If you have a rescue that will take Pepper but need her boarded until they can get her, I'll put a $200 toward boarding or transport... which ever will make this happen. The 2nd address you provided Sue indicated they have boarded her before... the first indicated she was due for vaccinations this month. I'll pay the vet or rescue directly if you can work this out. I dislike posting an offer of assistance publicly but I can't risk a PM being missed. Let me know if you can save her. Ingrid... have we missed something? Do you have information that we don't? I fail to see how we can be "thankful that they came to the rescue for help" if help offered hasn't been accepted. Especially IF the dog ends up euthanized by it's owner I suppose it's possible he's found someone to adopt her on his own... |
I was so excited to tell you all this morning that I have a possible foster home in Chicago for Pepper... I hope we find out what happened to her soon. I'll be heartbroken if this guy didn't accept our help and Pepper had to suffer because of his selfishness. |
Heather,
If Pepper can be located, the funds mentioned are available for transport or boarding. I wonder if the vet would contact the owner with the information? |
That would be GREAT!!!!!
I am going to be near Radford soon and will certainly help with a transport!! I hope we can find Pepper!! Thanks everybody Kathy |
Just to make it clear so we have no misunderstandings...
I'm stepping back until I hear that Pepper is alive and is being released to rescue or the owner turns her in. The only calls I made to the vets were to see if they had euthanized her... I didn't ask anything else. Too many people making phone calls is not good in a situation like this. Whoever has been working on this might want wish to contact the owner or the vet offices to see if something can be arranged. |
Cannot get in touch w/ the owner
Called both vets & both refused to put Pepper down. I know nothing else. this guy was offered all kinds of help & doesn't respond. Thank you all for caring about Pepper. Not to step on anyones beliefs but..... This is the path Patrick was taking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Tribes_Mission It smells strongly of a cult. I had to become an expert on cults b/c of my daughter |
UPDATE:
Just rec'd from Lisa who has taken Patrick's case over The owners have contacted me and asked if I would be keeping Pepper personally and wanted more details. That sounds encouraging. Does anyone have any potential home for her? I will most likely have to board her at Alpine Kennels so help there will be appreciated...that is IF they let me have her. Lisa She needs all the help she can get if the owners actually let her take Pepper. |
My friend in Chicago can take Pepper until the holidays. His landlord has only agreed to a temporary foster situation. It's not much, but it can be a last resort if it comes down to it. I will keep asking around to see if anyone else is able to permanently foster/adopt.
It strikes me as very irritating that this guy is being so particular when his other option is to put Pepper to sleep! I'd like to tell this guy where he can take his responsible dog owner act... |
You need to check out VA Partnership for Animal Welfare.... Christianburg,Va. It is Petfinder has Pepper listed there. |

Heather, I thought the same thing. People are so weird. |
This whole thing is strange and mysterious, I just hope the dog is somewhere safe. |
We all have tried everything we can to help Pepper
I even told him yesterday he could take Pepper to my moms house a half hour from him....also offered my son is at Virginia Tech and can pick her up! He is not working with anybody... I feel so sorry for Pepper, I can't imagine a gal giving love her whole life and being "discarded" Bless her heart I hope she lands in safe hands somewhere |
Offer their cult/sect/whatever a small donation. |
The guy is not responding. I suspect we will never know what happened to Pepper. |
