Christmas gift ideas for my boyfriend / SO - Please help!

I need some ideas for what to buy my boyfriend for Christmas. You guys are always pretty good at coming up with a wide variety, so please put your thinking caps on and help me out.

His interests are horses (he has four and rides frequently) and cars (he has a collector's mustang and attends car shows, etc). He's not really big into electronics and I don't think he'd use an IPOD if he had one. He doesn't like to shop for himself, so clothes are an option.

I'm really clueless. I don't even know how much I should spend, so don't let that limit your ideas.

Help!! :plead:

How long have you two kids been boyfriend/girlfriend? 8)
My brother is a horse nut too. Actually- lots of family are. Brad always enjoys getting new "riding gear" along with fun things for the tack room etc.
Do you have any pictures of his horses? A nice blow up in a beatuiful frame might be a nice gift? Just an idea...
I missed the post announcing the boyfriend!

What kind of riding does he do, Western or English? Or heaven forbid, saddleseat.

As you all know, I'm a horse nut and I really do not like getting horse stuff, especially generic horse art work. I'm very particular. However, Bob the Wonder Pony does like getting a big bag o' horse treats (in particular Mrs. Pasture's Horse Cookies) so that might be the horsey way to go.

That said, the nicest "horsey" gift I ever got was an oil portrait of Bob. That has the place of honor in my living room. I worked with a fellow who is a photographer and his dad is a portrait painter. Mark took pics of Bob under some premise then gave them to his dad to paint. The portrait was a going away gift when he left his job (I was his boss).

I doubt that any of this is helpful! Since this is your first Christmas together, keep it low key. Perhaps a sweater or a "dress shirt" he can wear on dates. A CD or DVD. A model of his car (which he probably has, so forget that idea). Does he cook? Maybe something for the kitchen.

And of course something with a sheepdog on it.
We've been dating for about three months, Steph.

I don't have any pictures of his horses, Lori, but I am supposed to take some for him for Christmas cards. So, that is a possibility. He does have a great shot of him driving his car through this famous windy road in the Smokeys that his sister had enlarged and framed for him and he really likes it. So, that's a good suggestion.

I like the oil portriat idea, too, Paula. Or maybe the oil portriat look on canvas that they do now.
Yes, he does cook. I was thinking about some cast iron cook wear we looked at and both liked. Is that too much for the first Christmas?
I don't want to go overboard. :?

Oh yeah...he loves Beau & Genny. He's amazed at how well they behave when we take them out (and frankly, so am I  ).
I think the oil portrait is too much for the first Christmas but a nice blow-up (like 8 by 10) in a handcrafted frame would be suitable. Cast iron cookware is nice and you can help him season it. (and hit him with it when he gets stoopid--like in the cartoons when the head takes on the shape of the frying pan!)
I had to look twice at who made the thread. Then I giggled and anxiously opened it up to read more..... yay for you!!! :)

With 3 months behind y'all... I prefer giving practical gifts over the too mushy. Then again, I'm all for personalized frames with a pic of the two of you doing something. I always get something they really need (broken phone, better ipod, etc ....combined with that small special "just for you" gift.
Try this: http://www.summitracing.com/
Great car stuff. If you know something that he needs for his car then you could pick it up here or there's always the gift card route. I bought wheels from them and since they were not in stock and they had promised delivery by Christmas and they weren't going to make it, the shipping was free!!!
They also have a fun and goofy car stuff section. Neon lights, engine replicas, naughty t-shirts I just threw that catalogue away this morning!!
A pair of really good (Tony Llama) cowboy boots

A cowboy can't never have too many pairs of boots
id say a really nice leather belt with a cool buckle...brian has one with tourquoise...not too horsey but still nice and manly 8)
Boots? Are you that good a friends?? Good pair is expensive or I'm just cheap...probably later.

If he really loves his car and washes & waxes, a good quality car kit like...uh oh spelling....McGuire's is a great product line. You can find them at better auto stores.

If he hunts then a good cast iron camp dutch oven with a "cowboy" cook book.........

Shirt, belt and buckle always good. Wranglers too. Would he use a duster?

New horse blanket.
I'm not sure if he wears ropers when he rides or not. I haven't been riding with him yet. :? I like the leather belt idea, Darcy, and the car stuff website is great, Mandy.

I'm afraid to buy him something that is actually for the car as he is so particular. But, something about the car might be good (tee shirt or sign for the garage, etc).

He doesn't hunt, Susan, but he does camp with his horse club when they go riding, so that's a good suggestion too.

I knew I would not be disappointed! Y'all've (how's that for a contraction??) got some great ideas!! 8) Keep 'em coming! :D
You could just wear his boots.

or

You could wear just his boots.

Ditto that one.

If you don't know the horse stuff he wants in particular - I would skip it. We are picky about it at our house too. Unless you know of something more expensive he wants, then a gift certificate to use toward it might be nice.

I like the nice picture idea a lot. His horses, you 2 together or something meaningful. Planning a nice day or night out at some sort of event you both like would be fun too.
I'm not sure how he'll feel about my posting his photo, so I've uploaded it and you can click on my camera to view it when it's approved.

I don't want to jinx myself by saying too much, but he's really fabulous. :D
Oh crap - its not there yet!!
I have to go to work now - this will give me something to look forward to when I get home. :D

He better treat you good!!! or he will have all of us after him..... 8)

Oh he does. :P I don't think I could wish for anything more. :P

Y'all are so great. I really love my sheepie friends.
nope still not there yet.....waiting waiting waiting...
Ain't love grand????

Tony is a Mustang lover. He recently sold his 2004 Cobra (with 3200 miles on it).

But one Christmas, all he wanted was car cover. There is a company called California Car Covers that have covers for specific cars, that fit like gloves.

Also, there is a company (I will have to get this info from my house) that will take a photo, blow it up, and do some sort of effect that makes it look like an oil painting. If you are interested, I'll get that info for you.

Or...how about just a big kiss for him

OMG Deb! That's the car he has! :D He has the cover, which he keeps on it inside the garage.

I have a place bookmarked in my favorites that does the oil painting effect on canvas from a digital photo. An 8x10 like that of him with his horses might be nice. It's not terribly expensive and personal enough without being too much so.
Tammy,
It sounds like the painting is the way to go. Congratulations on the new relationship, you deserve it :D
(BTW, my ex has a cobra svt and probably would have sold an organ to get Deb's husband's car with the low mileage)
OOOOh hottie! :clappurple:
High five, Tam!!!!!!!!!!

:high5:
wow, Tammy, you guys are a great looking couple :) . Only idea I can think of is a little sheepie brother or sister for Beau and Gen
Oh he's GORGEOUS and by the "bie" at the end of his name (what you titled the picture) .............it shows you really dig him. I always look at calling someone by their full name or a cutiepie version as a sign of affection. ....or does everyone call him that? ;)
I don't have any spectacular ideas as to what to give him but I would definitely recommend that you NOT get him any specific car stuff for his car unless he has requested exact items. It's one of those things where, even though the thought is there, he probably has pretty specific stuff he likes and needs and anything outside that wouldn't really be appreciated. When we tracked our cars, people would give us cheesy race gear and we always had to smile and act like it was really useful! Again, I appreciated the thought, but I think you'd do better with something else. Just speaking for my experience.

Clothes are nice. Not a whole wardrobe or anything but maybe one nice sweater and a belt like Darcy suggested for the "serious" gift and then you could throw in some fun stuff, like cute boxers, maybe some good candy (if he has something he really likes-- men will always take food as a gift, lol) or even a nice wallet with a good picture of the both of you inside. I think all of those say "I really like you, but I'm not trying to make you marry me tomorrow."
Oh Tammy, he is cute. You guys look great together.
Oh, and I just saw the pic. You guys are so cute!
You two look so cute together!!! :)
OMG, Tammy! Wow! What a great picture of you two! :excited: Robbie's such a cutie!

I don't have any suggestions - been married too long to have to come up with something original for a new relationship! The only thought that comes to mind is that picture you posted of the two of you - how about getting that framed?

Congrats, girlfriend!! :yay:
WOW is right you two make an adorable couple.

You could always wrap yourself in a big christmas bow

What about a weekend getaway "gift voucher" for 2 to a nice B&B, somewhere where maybe they offer trail rides and seclusion 8) . Be great after the hectic holiday season to have a weekend to relax, unwind and spend time together.
Eeewwwhhhh! Cute couple!!! :D

Thanks for the picture - you both look so nice together. :D
Saw the picture  !

Robbie is a KEEPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go!

You're spot on about the car stuff. I wouldn't even attempt it unless I knew exactly what he wanted, which I don't. And that is exactly the sentiment that I'm going for with the gift.

Great ideas! Y'all have been so helpful!!

Jo - I really do "dig" him. :P And yeah, I think he's pretty gorgeous, too. :P
He's cute, but Tammy - you look amazing! I'm really happy for you.

Meguiars (http://www.meguiars.com) is THE stuff that car guys use to clean their cars. Just in case anyone else is looking for a good guy gift.
Wow what a coincidence! We are both Tammy (except I spell mine Tammie), both have Robbie's, and both have sheepies! I would suggest a nice bottle of cologne or something. I've been married for 16 years so I haven't a clue on what to get a boyfriend. LOL!

Love those pictures!!! I am so happy for you! :D
Tammy congrats on the new beau, He's handsome!
You two make an adorable couple. Wishing you lots of luck!!
Tammy, did you make a decision yet?
Thanks, y'all!

Yes, Jill, I've decided to buy him a nice light weight henley. He's really hot natured and won't wear anything too heavy. I want to find it in a blue that is as close to his eye color as possible.

We went to an outdoor sporting store the other night, too, and so I got some ideas for a few small items to buy for him for when he goes camping with his horse buddies.

And, I think I'll frame a picture for him, too. Either one of us together, if I can get one I'm satisfied with between now & then, or the one of him with his horse & car I'll take this weekend for his Christmas card.

How's that sound? Enough? Too much? Not enough? :?

And, while I'm getting advise, let me ask you this, too. We're going to his daughter's house on Christmas day to watch his grandson open gifts. Do I need to buy for all of them, too? I will get his grandson something, for sure, but what about the daughter & son-in-law? What's the protocol?

BTW, Sue, I started to call you the other night for a wine recommendation. :D I was serving lamb chops & savory rice and I was sure you'd have a good recommendation. We ended up with a fruity red that wasn't too bad, but I was wishing I'd called you.
Ooh, Tammy, he's cute! Nice snag on the man! 8)

As for the Christmas thing, I'd say it'd be nice to bring them a small host present, like a bottle of wine or a Harry and David type thing. It's just nice to show up somewhere with something in hand, but I'd say you wouldn't need to get them any gifts.
That's kind of what I was thinking, too, Steph. I never go anywhere like that without a host gift, but wasn't sure about personal, individual gifts.
I know you have decided on things already, but I just saw this which I didn't think was too expensive for animal lovers if you have photos of his horses. You can customize it with text too.

Congrats on your new relationship!
yup tam, just a nice hostess gift will do.....you could even give a lovely potted amarylis, wine, fruit and cheese basket........
Yep- I agree with all of the above recomendations.
Another sugestion about Christmas day... I ALWAYS enjoy receiving something home made-- cookies- candy , breads etc.
If they have a favorite treat that may be a nice personal gift. Or- if you are a bread maker- maybe a nice loaf with with flavored butters and jams-- and of course a nice wine! :)
