Jumping and pulling - bad neck question
Also about the jumping - I hear that turning your back on them when they jump is the best - since grabbing their paws could give you trouble with them not wanting to be groomed. To be honest - I have a bad neck - but I want a big dog anyway - so is there a way to position my body when she jumps - maybe try to move her weight onto my hips instead? I've walked a 65 lb dog before that pulled - and was relieved to find out that despite her pulling - that she did not hurt my neck (yay!) but if they are let's say... 100 lbs... is there something special you need to do to keep them from dragging you all around town? I'm sure that even people with good necks and other parts could get injured easily if their big dog dragged them. |

| Early training is your best bet! If that doesn't work - the halti or gentle leader helps and if all else fails - you could use the pinch collar! |
| What we did was to read their body language to see when they are about to jump, then put pressure on their shoulders to prevent them from jumping, then say NO! very firmly. Reading the body language is easy, they get on a very specific position before jumping, just keep an eye on them. I Don't know if that may help with your neck.
Pulling is harder on your arm and sholder, but your neck may get strained if they pull while you are off guard. Consistent training is the key. I tried the gentle leader and it worked wonders until Lennon found a way to chew it off. With Sofa, the choke collar proved to be a very good option. |
We have just discovered the world of the halter! WOW! What a difference! Mopsey used to pull, and i used the "stop, sit, keep walking" trick suggested here to get her to stop. Yet still, when someone walked by, she wanted to go and say hi by jumping on them. Now with the halter, she does not pull, doesnt qiuet heel, but still, what a difference! And, because the leash attaches in the middle of their back, they can't get a good jump in either! lol So, walking is much easier and much more fun! I highly recommend it!  |
